What an essential dignities table measures

An essential dignities table sets out, sign by sign and degree by degree, which planets hold authority over each part of the zodiac. A planet in a place it governs acts from its own resources, as a householder acts in his own house; a planet in a place that belongs to others acts as a guest; and a planet in a place opposed to its nature acts as an exile.

The tradition counts five essential dignities — domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term and face — and two debilities, detriment and fall. Domicile and exaltation are the major dignities. Triplicity, term and face are the minor ones, and they grant decreasing measures of familiarity with the sign. A planet that holds none of the five at its degree is called peregrine, from the Latin for a foreigner. Arabic authors spoke of each claim as a planet's ḥaẓẓ, its share or portion in a place, and al-Bīrūnī's Book of Instruction (al-Tafhīm, 1029) lays the shares out in tables.

These dignities are called essential because they depend on the planet's place in the zodiac alone. Accidental dignity — house, speed, direct or retrograde motion, distance from the Sun — is a separate matter.

Domicile and exaltation: the major dignities

Each planet's domicile (bayt, house) is the sign or pair of signs it rules. The luminaries rule one sign each; the five other planets rule two. Detriment (wabāl) is the sign opposite a domicile. Exaltation (sharaf, honor) is the sign where the planet is raised up and its nature shows most clearly, and fall (hubūṭ, descent) is the sign opposite its exaltation.

The table can be rebuilt from one pattern: each detriment is the sign opposite the domicile, and each fall the sign opposite the exaltation. Of the luminaries, the Sun rules Leo and is exalted in Aries, with detriment in Aquarius and fall in Libra; the Moon rules Cancer and is exalted in Taurus, with detriment in Capricorn and fall in Scorpio. Of the five planets, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, exaltation Virgo, detriment Sagittarius and Pisces, fall Pisces; Venus rules Taurus and Libra, exaltation Pisces, detriment Scorpio and Aries, fall Virgo; Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, exaltation Capricorn, detriment Libra and Taurus, fall Cancer; Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, exaltation Cancer, detriment Gemini and Virgo, fall Capricorn; Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, exaltation Libra, detriment Cancer and Leo, fall Aries.

Within each exaltation lies one exact degree, the noble degree, where the honor is at its height: the Sun at 19° Aries, the Moon 3° Taurus, Mercury 15° Virgo, Venus 27° Pisces, Mars 28° Capricorn, Jupiter 15° Cancer and Saturn 21° Libra.

The signs in order, with their rulers

Read the other way round, the same table runs through the signs in order, Aries to Pisces. The signs alternate masculine and feminine, pass through fire, earth, air and water in turn, and repeat the cardinal, fixed and mutable qualities (movable, fixed and common, in the older terms). Each sign has one domicile lord and is the detriment of one planet, and seven of the twelve also host a planet's exaltation.

Lists of the 5 good traits of each zodiac sign start from the Sun sign and sketch a type. The tradition began from the sign itself and stated five other things for every one of the twelve: its element, with the two qualities it carries (fire hot and dry, earth cold and dry, air hot and moist, water cold and moist); its mode; whether it is masculine and diurnal or feminine and nocturnal; its lord; and the planets exalted, in detriment or in fall there. Character was then judged from the whole chart, and a sign lends its nature to whatever planet stands in it. The seasons below are those of the northern hemisphere, where these books were written.

Canopy's natal chart reads character the same way, through its Temperament section (al-mizāj), its Dignity Analysis of all seven planets and its Almuten, the lord of the nativity.

  • Aries, al-Ḥamal, the ram: movable fire, hot and dry, masculine and diurnal; the day house of Mars, exaltation of the Sun (19°); detriment of Venus, fall of Saturn. It opens the zodiac at the March equinox, and the tradition read in it the quickness of a movable sign and the heat of Mars.
  • Taurus, al-Thawr, the bull: fixed earth, cold and dry, feminine and nocturnal; the night house of Venus, exaltation of the Moon (3°); detriment of Mars, and no planet's fall. Fixed and earthy, it was read as steady and slow to change, with Venus's taste for pleasure and beauty.
  • Gemini, al-Jawzāʾ or al-Tawʾamān, the twins: common air, hot and moist, masculine and diurnal; the day house of Mercury; detriment of Jupiter, and no planet's exaltation or fall. A double-bodied sign under Mercury, it joins the versatility of the common signs to Mercury's speech and learning.
  • Cancer, al-Saraṭān, the crab: movable water, cold and moist, feminine and nocturnal; domicile of the Moon, exaltation of Jupiter (15°); detriment of Saturn, fall of Mars. It opens the summer at the June solstice and takes the changeability of the Moon, its lord.
  • Leo, al-Asad, the lion: fixed fire, hot and dry, masculine and diurnal; the Sun's only domicile; detriment of Saturn, and no planet's exaltation or fall. What is called Leo loyalty has a root in the doctrine: Leo is a fixed sign, and Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos credits the fixed signs with constancy and firmness.
  • Virgo, al-Sunbula, the ear of grain: common earth, cold and dry, feminine and nocturnal; the night house of Mercury and his exaltation (15°); detriment of Jupiter, fall of Venus. Virgo traits and personality, read this way, are Mercury's twice over — learning, reckoning and speech — held in cold, dry earth.
  • Libra, al-Mīzān, the scales: movable air, hot and moist, masculine and diurnal; the day house of Venus, exaltation of Saturn (21°); detriment of Mars, fall of the Sun. Venus gives it her grace and Saturn, honored there, his gravity; its three decans belong to the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter.
  • Scorpio, al-ʿAqrab, the scorpion: fixed water, cold and moist, feminine and nocturnal; the night house of Mars; detriment of Venus, fall of the Moon, and no planet's exaltation. Mars's heat and force work here inside a cold, moist and fixed sign.
  • Sagittarius, al-Qaws, the bow: common fire, hot and dry, masculine and diurnal; the day house of Jupiter; detriment of Mercury, and no planet's exaltation or fall. Jupiter, the greater benefic, lends it his generosity and good faith, and the fire its warmth.
  • Capricorn, al-Jady, the kid: movable earth, cold and dry, feminine and nocturnal; the night house of Saturn, exaltation of Mars (28°); detriment of the Moon, fall of Jupiter. It opens the winter at the December solstice, and Saturn gives it patience and endurance.
  • Aquarius, al-Dalw, the bucket: fixed air, hot and moist, masculine and diurnal; the day house of Saturn; detriment of the Sun, and no planet's exaltation or fall. The positive traits of Aquarius, in this reckoning, are those of Saturn at his best in a fixed sign: depth of thought, patience and constancy.
  • Pisces, al-Ḥūt, the fish: common water, cold and moist, feminine and nocturnal; the night house of Jupiter, exaltation of Venus (27°); detriment and fall of Mercury. It closes the winter and, like every common sign, shares in two seasons; Jupiter lends it kindness and Venus, exalted, her grace.

Libra zodiac sign traits, in the dignity tradition, are read through these rulers. The traditional qualities of Libra are those of a movable air sign, masculine and diurnal, which the Sun enters at the September equinox; Venus is its lord, Saturn reaches his noble degree there at 21°, and the Sun, exalted opposite in Aries, is lowered. Draw the Libra triangle (Libra, Aquarius and Gemini, each a trine from the next) and you have the airy triplicity, ruled by Saturn by day and Mercury by night, with Jupiter participating. By the same measure, the words that describe a Capricorn begin with cardinal, earthy, feminine and nocturnal, and then with Saturn, its lord.

Rulership also names the ruler of a chart, the lord of its rising sign. With the rising sign in Cancer, the Moon rules the chart; a rising sign in Libra gives the rule to Venus; with the rising sign in Aquarius the ruler is Saturn; and with Scorpio rising (Asc Scorpio, as a chart abbreviates it) it is Mars. Modern astrology often hands Aquarius to Uranus and Scorpio to Pluto, but the traditional scheme, which Canopy's dignities follow, keeps to the seven visible planets.

Triplicity, Egyptian bounds and Chaldean faces

Triplicity (muthallatha) is shared by element, and it depends on sect — whether the chart is of the day, with the Sun above the horizon, or of the night. In the scheme handed down from Dorotheus, the fire signs are ruled by the Sun by day and Jupiter by night, with Saturn as participating ruler; earth by Venus by day, the Moon by night, and Mars participating; air by Saturn by day, Mercury by night, and Jupiter participating; water by Venus by day, Mars by night, and the Moon participating. William Lilly later gave the water signs to Mars by day and by night.

The terms (ḥudūd), also called bounds, divide each sign into five unequal segments, each ruled by one of the five planets other than the luminaries. Several sets circulated. Ptolemy discussed the Egyptian terms in the Tetrabiblos alongside a Chaldean scheme and a third set he reported finding in an old manuscript, now called the Ptolemaic terms, but the Egyptian bounds remained the more widely used. In Aries they run Jupiter to 6°, Venus to 12°, Mercury to 20°, Mars to 25° and Saturn to 30°.

The faces (wujūh) are the thirty-six decans, ten degrees each, given to the planets in the Chaldean order — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon — beginning with Mars at the opening of Aries. Aries thus holds Mars, the Sun and Venus; Taurus holds Mercury, the Moon and Saturn; and the sequence closes on Mars in the last decan of Pisces. The decan is the division; the face is the dignity it confers.

Canopy works as a decan astrology calculator. Open any planet in your natal chart and the app shows which decan it occupies (1st, 2nd or 3rd: 0°–10°, 10°–20° or 20°–30°) and its Chaldean decan ruler; the Today reading's Hidden Influences gives the decan of each planet in today's sky, read through 36 decan interpretations drawn from the Picatrix, Abū Maʿshar and Sahl ibn Bishr.

Detriment, fall and the peregrine planet

A planet in detriment is in the sign opposite its home, working against its own nature; a planet in fall is in the sign opposite its honor, lowered and short of esteem. Detriment suggests a planet acting awkwardly or at cross-purposes, fall a planet that is overlooked or ill-regarded.

Mars v Venus is a classic case of detriment. The lesser malefic and the lesser benefic rule opposite signs, Mars holding Aries and Scorpio and Venus Taurus and Libra, so each is in detriment in the other's houses. Venus in Virgo is in turn the textbook fall: the planet of pleasure in the sign where Mercury is both lord and exalted. Before reading anything into Virgo Venus compatibility, the tradition asks how Venus fares there: her term, her aspects, and whether Mercury receives her.

Neither is a verdict on its own. The tradition weighs essential debility against everything else in the figure: a debilitated planet that stands angular, moves quickly and is well aspected can still act with force, and reception — when a planet applies by aspect to the lord of the place it occupies, and that lord receives it — softens much of the harm. Debility can also sit alongside a minor dignity. Venus at 8° Aries is in detriment, yet she stands in her own term there, so she is not wholly without resources.

Peregrine names the absence of dignity rather than a hostile placement: the planet has no share in its place, and it may or may not also be in detriment or fall. A peregrine planet is unsupported where it stands, and much then depends on whether another planet receives it.

The strengths and weaknesses of the signs, read by dignity

Popular astrology gives each Sun sign a list of virtues and faults. The dignity tradition sorts the zodiac another way: no sign is good or bad in itself, but the planets in it are strong or weak there. A sign's good traits belong to the planets at home or exalted there, its bad traits to the planets in detriment or fall, and either reaches your chart only through a planet that actually stands in that sign.

By the major dignities and their opposites, opposite signs are mirror images. Each detriment lies across from a domicile and each fall across from an exaltation, so the planets one sign strengthens, the sign facing it weakens. The minor dignities — triplicity, term and face — do not mirror in this way. Here are the six pairs.

  • Cancer and Capricorn. The Moon is at home in Cancer and Jupiter exalted there, while Saturn is in detriment and Mars in fall. Capricorn reverses all four: Saturn is at home and Mars exalted, while the Moon is in detriment and Jupiter in fall. So the negative traits of a Cancer come from the planets Capricorn strengthens, and Capricorn bad traits from the planets Cancer honors.
  • Gemini and Sagittarius. Each is the home of the planet in detriment in the other: Mercury rules Gemini and Jupiter is in detriment there; Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Mercury is in detriment there. Neither sign holds a planet's exaltation or fall, so the Gemini pros and cons come down to one planet at ease and one working against the grain.
  • Virgo and Pisces. Mercury holds both domicile and exaltation in Virgo, the only planet to have both in one sign, and both detriment and fall in Pisces. Jupiter and Venus run the other way: Jupiter is in detriment in Virgo and at home in Pisces, Venus in fall in Virgo and exalted in Pisces. Sort the Pisces good and bad qualities by planet and you have the Virgo positive and negative traits turned inside out.
  • Taurus and Scorpio. Venus is at home in Taurus and the Moon exalted there, while Mars is in detriment; in Scorpio, Mars is at home, Venus in detriment and the Moon in fall. The Taurus pros and cons are Scorpio's, reversed.
  • Aquarius and Leo. The Sun is at home in Leo and Saturn in detriment there; Saturn is at home in Aquarius and the Sun in detriment. Neither sign holds an exaltation or a fall, so the Aquarius good and bad traits are a single exchange: Saturn strong, and every Aquarius Sun in detriment.
  • Libra and Aries. Venus is at home in Libra and Saturn exalted there, while Mars is in detriment and the Sun in fall; in Aries, Mars is at home and the Sun exalted, while Venus is in detriment and Saturn in fall. Read by dignity, the Libra positive and negative traits are those of Aries reversed, down to the Sun himself, who is honored in Aries and lowered in Libra.

None of this is a verdict on a person. A planet in detriment or fall can still be strengthened by its house, its aspects and reception, as the section above explains, and a Sun-sign label leaves out the rest of the chart. Understanding your strongest and weakest planets and their dignities provides tools and remediation options to navigate difficult periods in your life, such as your Saturn return, or planetary retrogrades. In Canopy's natal chart, Dignity Analysis sets out the dignity of each of your seven planets and names the weak ones (in detriment or in fall, peregrine, retrograde or combust), and the Almuten section weighs the lord of your nativity and suggests remedies to strengthen or honor it.

Scoring essential dignity, and the road to the almuten

The dignities lend themselves to counting. Al-Qabīṣī in his Introduction, like al-Bīrūnī, gives each planet shares at a degree: five for domicile, four for exaltation, three for triplicity, two for term and one for face. The almuten guide works an example through by day and by night.

William Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) extended the count downward, scoring detriment at −5, fall at −4 and a peregrine planet at −5, so that each condition carries a value between +5 and −5, and a planet's essential dignity score is the sum of the values that apply to it. The peregrine penalty is Lilly's convention and is not shared by every traditional author; the medieval tallies for the almuten add shares without subtracting debilities.

The planet with the most shares in a given degree is its almuten, and summed over the chart's principal places, the same count elects the lord of the whole nativity — see the almuten. In electional astrology the same reasoning chooses moments: a beginning is made stronger when the planets ruling the matter are dignified, and weaker when they are in detriment or fall.

How Canopy reads essential dignities

Canopy calculates your natal chart from the exact sky at your birth using essential dignities, whole-sign houses and the Lot of Fortune. Each of the seven planets is read by its sign, its degree and its house, and its dignity in that sign tells how much strength it has to act. Every placement carries a reading drawn from the classical tradition.

A noble degrees card measures how far each planet stands today from its own noble degree. Within 3° of it, in the same sign, the degree is active; the closest planet leads the card, and all seven are listed under All Noble Degrees.

The dignities also carry the almuten: Canopy elects your lord of the nativity by counting the shares set out above at five places in your chart (or at three if your birth time is unknown), as the almuten guide explains.

When you ask Canopy for an electional window for a chosen purpose, the strength of the planets that rule the houses of that matter — whether they stand in domicile or exaltation, detriment or fall — counts toward the window. Talismanic timing is stricter still, and refuses a moment whose elected planet is in fall, in detriment, or peregrine. Canopy is available on iPhone and Android.

Questions

What are the five essential dignities in astrology?

They are domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term and face, in descending order of strength. Domicile is the sign a planet rules; exaltation is the sign where it is honored; triplicity is shared by element and depends on whether the chart is of the day or the night; terms are five unequal segments of each sign; faces are the three ten-degree decans of each sign.

What is the difference between detriment and fall?

Detriment is the sign opposite a planet's domicile, where it works against its own nature. Fall is the sign opposite its exaltation, where it is lowered and short of esteem. Both are essential debilities, but neither settles a judgment alone: house, motion, aspects and reception can strengthen a planet that is debilitated by sign.

What does peregrine mean in astrology?

A planet is peregrine when it holds none of the five essential dignities at its degree — not in its domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term or face. The word comes from the Latin for a foreigner. Peregrine names an absence of dignity rather than a hostile placement, so such a planet may or may not also be in detriment or fall. Much then depends on whether another planet receives it.

What are the triplicity rulers for day and night charts?

In the Dorothean scheme, fire is ruled by the Sun by day and Jupiter by night, with Saturn participating; earth by Venus by day and the Moon by night, with Mars; air by Saturn by day and Mercury by night, with Jupiter; water by Venus by day and Mars by night, with the Moon. Lilly's later scheme gives water to Mars at all times.

Do Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have essential dignities?

Not in the traditional system. The essential dignities were built for the seven visible planets, from the Sun and Moon out to Saturn, and every table of domiciles, exaltations, triplicities, terms and faces is drawn from those seven. Modern astrologers have assigned rulerships to the outer planets, but these sit outside the classical scheme.

Does the retrograde change a planet's dignity?

Not its essential dignity, which rests on the sign and degree a planet occupies, not on its motion, so a retrograde planet keeps whatever domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term or face it holds there. Traditional astrologers counted retrograde motion among the accidental debilities instead, alongside combustion by the Sun and a cadent house, so a planet can be strong by sign and still hampered by the retrograde.

What are the attributes of Libra in traditional astrology?

Libra zodiac traits in the tradition begin with its nature and its rulers: a cardinal air sign, masculine and diurnal, the domicile of Venus and the exaltation of Saturn, the detriment of Mars and the fall of the Sun. Its Egyptian bounds run Saturn to 6°, Mercury to 14°, Jupiter to 21°, Venus to 28° and Mars to 30°.

What are Libra qualities, and where do Libra personality traits come from?

In the dignity tradition, character comes from the planets that are strong or weak in a sign rather than from the sign as a type. Read that way, the Libra positive traits belong to Venus, at home there, with her taste for beauty, company and music, and to Saturn, honored there, with his gravity and depth of thought; Mars in detriment and the Sun in fall mark the sign's weak points. How much of this a Libra Sun, Moon or rising sign shows depends on Venus's own condition in your chart. Canopy reads not only the superficial Sun-sign Libra personality traits but the whole person: your temperament (al-mizāj), your rising sign and its lord, your Moon, your almuten and the dignity of each planet, Venus included.

What does a Mars in signs table show?

In traditional astrology it shows where Mars is strong and where he is weak. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, is exalted in Capricorn with his noble degree at 28°, and is in detriment in Libra and Taurus and in fall in Cancer. Because the Chaldean sequence of faces opens and closes with him, he also holds six faces where each other planet holds five. Rather than look your Mars up in Mars sign tables of dates, you can let the Canopy app calculate it from your birth details and show its dignity there.

Astro Cancer: what does a Sun sign in Cancer mean in traditional astrology?

Cancer is a cardinal water sign, feminine and nocturnal: the domicile of the Moon, the exaltation of Jupiter, the detriment of Saturn and the fall of Mars. A Sun sign in Cancer puts the Sun in the Moon's house as a guest. He holds none of the five dignities there, so he is peregrine, though in neither detriment nor fall, and much depends on how the Moon, his host, is placed.

Does Canopy work as a Jupiter sign calculator?

Inside the app, yes: Canopy calculates your natal chart from your birth details, so Jupiter appears with the other planets by sign and degree, and opening him shows his decan and his dignity in that sign. The signs of Jupiter in the dignity table are Sagittarius and Pisces, his domiciles; Cancer, his exaltation; Gemini and Virgo, his detriment; and Capricorn, his fall. Your birth chart Saturn is read the same way: at home in Capricorn and Aquarius, exalted in Libra, in detriment in Cancer and Leo, and in fall in Aries.

What is the list of the zodiac signs in order, and which planet rules each?

In order, the twelve signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Their traditional domicile rulers, in the same sequence, are Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Saturn and Jupiter: the luminaries take Cancer and Leo, and the five planets fan out from them in pairs in the order of their spheres, ending with Saturn opposite the lights.

What is the story of Leo in astrology?

The story of Leo that the tradition told is about heat. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos explains that Cancer and Leo, the signs nearest our zenith and the most productive of warmth, were given to the two lights, and Leo, being masculine, became the house of the Sun, his only domicile. In Arabic the sign is al-Asad, the lion, named for the constellation whose brightest star, Regulus, the Arabic astronomers called Qalb al-Asad, the Heart of the Lion: one of the fifteen Behenian stars Canopy reads against your chart.

Sept Libra vs Oct Libra: what is the difference?

In the tradition, the difference is the decan. The Sun enters Libra around 22 or 23 September and stays in its first decan, the face of the Moon, until about the start of October; it then crosses the second decan, ruled by Saturn, and from around mid-October the third, ruled by Jupiter. The dates shift a little from year to year, so open the Sun in your Canopy chart to see its decan and Chaldean decan ruler.

What are the 3 Libra decans?

Libra's thirty degrees divide into three faces of ten, given in the Chaldean order: the Moon rules the first (0°–10°), Saturn the second (10°–20°) and Jupiter the third (20°–30°). They are where October Libra traits part company with September ones, since the Sun spends most of October's Libra days in the decans of Saturn and Jupiter. The Sun himself holds none of the five dignities anywhere in Libra and is in fall throughout, so what changes as he moves through the sign is the planet that rules his face and the one that rules his term. In Canopy, every planet's detail shows its decan and Chaldean decan ruler, not only the Sun's.

What are the zodiac signs in fall for each planet?

Each planet falls in the sign opposite its exaltation: the Sun in Libra, the Moon in Scorpio, Mercury in Pisces, Venus in Virgo, Mars in Cancer, Jupiter in Capricorn and Saturn in Aries. Five signs host no planet's fall: Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius.

What are the best careers for Virgos in traditional astrology?

Virgo astrology career advice in the tradition begins with Mercury, which rules Virgo and is exalted there; Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos gives Mercury the work of scribes, merchants, calculators and teachers. Profession, though, is read from the whole chart, chiefly the tenth place and the planet that governs action, rather than from the Sun sign alone, so the best careers for Virgos depend on how Mercury and those significators stand. Canopy shows Mercury's dignity in your chart.

What is the quality of Virgo in astrology?

Its quality, or mode, is mutable: common, or double-bodied, in the older terms. Virgo closes the northern summer, as Gemini closes the spring, Sagittarius the autumn and Pisces the winter, and the tradition held that the common signs share in two seasons and partake of both natures. Its element is earth, cold and dry; it is feminine and nocturnal; and it is the one sign in which a planet, Mercury, is both lord and exalted, while Jupiter is in detriment there and Venus in fall.

Meaning of Virgo girl: why is Virgo the maiden, and is it a feminine sign?

Virgo is Latin for maiden, translating the Greek Parthenos. The Arabic astronomers called the constellation al-ʿAdhrāʾ, the virgin, and the sign al-Sunbula, the ear of grain she holds, marked by the star Spica. As a sign Virgo is feminine and nocturnal, common earth, cold and dry, but feminine classes the sign, not the women born under it. The classical books generally give one account of each sign rather than separate ones for men and women, so in female and male Virgos personality traits are read from the same testimonies, beginning with Mercury, the sign's lord, who is also exalted there.

What are Scorpio qualities in traditional astrology?

Scorpio, al-ʿAqrab, the scorpion, is a fixed water sign, cold and moist, feminine and nocturnal, and the night house of Mars, as Aries is his day house. Venus is in detriment there and the Moon in fall, and no planet is exalted. Its nature comes from that pairing: Mars, hot and dry, as lord of a cold, moist sign, with the steadiness of a fixed mode. A planet in Scorpio is read through Mars's condition in the chart, as its host.

What are Aquarius man qualities in traditional astrology?

The old books, as a rule, do not describe one Aquarius for men and another for women. Aquarius, al-Dalw, the bucket, is a fixed air sign, hot and moist, masculine and diurnal, the day house of Saturn and the detriment of the Sun; masculine here classes the sign, alternating with feminine around the zodiac, rather than describing men. The traits of Aquarius man and woman alike are read from Saturn's condition as the sign's lord, together with the rising sign and the Moon, and Aquarius good traits show most when Saturn is well dignified.

What are the good and bad traits of a Taurus?

In the dignity tradition a sign is not good or bad in itself; the planets in it are strong or weak. Taurus is the domicile of Venus and the exaltation of the Moon, so both act well there, while Mars, in detriment, acts at cross-purposes. In the same way, the bad things about a Capricorn are really the planets that struggle in it: Saturn is at home and Mars exalted there, but the Moon is in detriment and Jupiter in fall.

What are the pros and cons of a Gemini?

In the dignity tradition, the pros and cons of Gemini are its planets. Mercury rules Gemini and acts there with ease; Jupiter is in detriment there and works against his own nature; no planet is exalted or falls in Gemini. Mercury is also host to every planet in the sign, so when you weigh Gemini positive and negative traits in a real chart, much depends on where your Mercury stands.

Cancer best and worst traits: which planets are behind them?

Lists of the bad things about Cancer zodiac personalities describe people; the dignity tradition describes planets. The best traits belong to the Moon, at home in Cancer, and to Jupiter, exalted there, with his noble degree at 15°. The bad traits of a Cancer belong to the two malefics, Saturn in detriment and Mars in fall, which makes Cancer the only sign where both are debilitated, and they enter your chart only if Saturn or Mars stands in Cancer.

What does traditional astrology say about Capricorn negative traits?

The tradition points to two things, and neither is a verdict on a person. The sign itself is earthy, cold and dry, the quality the humoral physicians called melancholic, and Saturn, its lord, shares that nature; and two planets are weak there, the Moon in detriment and Jupiter in fall. Canopy looks past Sun-sign labels like these to the whole person: your temperament (al-mizāj), read from the testimonies of the chart, your rising sign and its lord, your Moon and your almuten.

What are the positive and negative traits of Pisces?

Pisces positive and negative traits, read by dignity, are its planets. Pisces is the only sign where both benefics hold a major dignity, Jupiter at home and Venus exalted, with her noble degree at 27°, and the only sign where one planet suffers both detriment and fall: Mercury, the planet of reason and speech. So the caution falls on Mercury in Pisces, not on everyone born under the sign.

What are the best rising signs?

The tradition names no single best ascendant. It looks instead at the lord of the rising sign: a chart whose ascendant ruler holds domicile, exaltation or a lesser dignity, and stands well by house and aspect, is better supported than one whose ruler is in detriment, fall or peregrine, whatever the sign that rises.

Pisces twins: do twins have the same birth chart?

Twins almost always share a Sun sign, and Pisces, the double-bodied sign of the two fish, makes a fitting emblem for them. The tradition, though, read the hour. The rising degree moves on average about one degree every four minutes, so twins born minutes apart have different rising degrees and, near the edge of a sign, may even have different rising signs, with different lords of the chart and different houses. The puzzle is an old one: Augustine, in the City of God, tells how Nigidius Figulus spun a potter's wheel to show how far the heavens turn between two births. Canopy counts your houses from your own rising sign, which is why your birth time matters.
