What Canopy does

Your day, read by the sky.

The core instruments of a tradition codified by al-Bīrūnī in the eleventh century — rendered legibly, every reading drawn from classical sources. A daily cosmic calendar in your pocket: today's reading, the planet ruling the hour, tonight's lunar mansion and the best days ahead for what you plan. Each shown here in both appearances, Coffee Cream and Midnight.

01Daily reading

See what today favors.

Sixteen sections, with your birth chart: the planet that rules the day, six areas of life read against today's sky — the fortunate, saʿd side of the day and the naḥs side, where to go carefully — your transit chart for today, and the house of your chart the Moon lights. Each hour of day and night is ruled by a planet in the ancient order — Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars. Canopy tells you which rules the moment, and its counsel; and tonight's mansion of the twenty-eight, its angel, and what it favors and warns against.

Is Canopy available on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Canopy is available for iPhone on the App Store and for Android on Google Play.

What is Arabian astrology?

It is the astrology of the medieval Islamic world, written in Arabic from the eighth century onward in centres such as Baghdad. It inherited Greek, Persian and Indian astrology and developed techniques such as the lunar mansions, the Arabic lots, planetary hours and electional timing. Read the guide to Arabic astrology.

What does Canopy calculate?

An extended chart, not just a Sun sign: your natal chart with essential dignities, whole-sign houses, ten Arabic lots and the almuten of the nativity, with the sign, house, decan and dignity of every planet, your Venus sign and Mars sign included; the Moon's lunar mansion each night; the planetary hour ruling the moment; electional windows for a chosen purpose; 35 fixed stars against your chart and the current sky; and transits to your natal houses.

Where do Canopy's readings come from?

From the traditional astrologers and their classical texts — al-Bīrūnī's Book of Instruction (al-Tafhīm), Abū Maʿshar, Māshāʾallāh, al-Qabīṣī, Sahl ibn Bishr, Abū ʿAlī al-Khayyāṭ, al-Ṣūfī's Book of Fixed Stars and the Picatrix, and the Greek and Persian authors they inherited — with the decan readings drawn from the Picatrix, Abū Maʿshar and Sahl ibn Bishr.

Which languages does Canopy support?

Canopy is available in English, Arabic and Turkish.

Does Canopy show an astrology transit chart?

Yes, as part of your daily reading. The Active Transits wheel rings the planets' current positions around your natal chart and lists the aspects they make to your natal planets one by one, and the full reading's Planetary Transits Through Your Houses names the house of your chart each one is passing through. The best transits, by the old rule, are those of the benefics, Jupiter and Venus, especially across the angular houses of your chart.

Does Canopy show my Moon and rising sign as well as my Sun?

Yes. All three zodiac signs, Sun, Moon and rising, sit side by side just under your natal chart wheel, since the old texts weighed the rising and Moon signs as closely as the Sun. To get your Moon sign, rising sign and the lunar mansion the Moon held at your birth, enter your birth date, time and place in the app: no quiz can find a rising sign, but a birth time can, so Canopy works as a rising sign calculator and birth chart finder in one.

Is there a daily career horoscope in Canopy?

Yes, cast from your own chart. Instead of one Aries, Taurus or Cancer career horoscope today, written for a twelfth of the world, the daily reading sets today's planets against your natal houses and shows which areas of life, career and wealth among them, look favorable and which call for caution. Whether you are a Pisces, a Capricorn or an Aquarius, your daily work horoscope comes from your full chart, not your Sun sign alone.

What does an Aries career horoscope today leave out?

Your own Mars. Mars rules Aries, and Scorpio too as its night house, so a Sun in either sign answers to Mars, and what matters is where your Mars stands, in which house and with what dignity, and which transits reach it. In a Scorpio horoscope today, career gets one line for every Scorpio alike; Canopy's Active Transits shows which of today's planets aspect your Mars, and the full reading names the house of your chart each one is crossing.

How would Canopy read a daily career horoscope for Cancer?

Through the Moon, the lord of Cancer and the swiftest of the seven planets. A typical Cancer horoscope career forecast is written for every Cancer at once; Canopy shows your natal Moon's sign and house and the lunar mansion she held at your birth, and each day The Moon in Your Sky names the house of your chart she is lighting. When it is your tenth, the house of profession, the reading turns to career and reputation.

Does Canopy have a daily job horoscope?

In effect, yes. The Career area of the daily reading, al-ʿAmal, belongs to your tenth house of profession and your sixth of daily work, with the Sun, Saturn and Mercury as its planets, and each day it is marked favorable, challenged or neutral; tap it to see which of those planets are dignified or debilitated today. Rather than one Taurus career horoscope for today written for every Taurus, the Career area follows today's transits to your own natal planets and the house of your chart the Moon is lighting.

Can Canopy give me a Capricorn career horoscope daily?

Yes, read from your own chart rather than from the sign alone. Saturn rules Capricorn and Mars is exalted there, so a Capricorn Sun answers first to Saturn and then to Mars; Canopy shows the dignity of both in your chart, your Midheaven's sign and, each day, which of your houses the transiting planets are crossing. A horoscope written for the sign speaks to every Capricorn at once; Canopy reads a career horoscope today Capricorn by Capricorn.

Is there a best hour of the day for a career move?

The tradition gave the Sun's hour to dealings with those in authority and Jupiter's to petitions, and Canopy's Planetary Hour card names the planet ruling each hour as it comes. It is a natural check for a Leo, since the Sun rules Leo: a Leo horoscope career today reads the same for every Leo, but the Sun's hour comes round three or four times a day. Read the guide to planetary hours.

Rising sign vs Sun sign: what is the difference?

Your Sun sign, what most people mean by their star sign, is the sign the Sun held at your birth and, except on a cusp day, comes from the date alone. Your rising sign, the Ascendant, is the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth: it changes about every two hours, needs your birth time and place, and becomes your first whole-sign house, so your Sun sign is your rising sign only if you were born around sunrise. Canopy shows both, with your Moon sign beside them.

Sun vs Moon sign: what is the difference?

The Sun and Moon are the two lights of the chart: the Sun leads a chart cast by day and the Moon a chart cast by night, so the old authors never read the Sun sign by itself. Your Sun sign comes from your birth date; the Moon changes sign every two to three days, so your Moon sign can need your birth time as well. Rising vs Sun vs Moon, then: the rising sign sets your houses, the Sun and Moon are the lights read within them, and Canopy shows all three together.

Can your Sun, Moon and rising sign all be the same?

Yes, and the sky shows when. Born around sunrise just after a new moon, the Moon and rising Sun lie close together near the eastern horizon, so all three of your signs can be one. Born at sunset under a full moon, the picture turns over: with the Moon rising and Sun setting, your Moon sign is usually your rising sign, and your Sun usually sits in the seventh sign, opposite. Canopy finds all three from when and where you were born and sets them together under your chart wheel, each with its Arabic name.

What do your Sun, Moon and rising signs mean together?

In the tradition they meet in your temperament, al-mizāj. Canopy judges it the classical way, from testimonies of hot, cold, dry and moist, among them the rising sign and its lord, the Moon's sign and phase, and the season your Sun's sign belongs to, which for a Libra Sun born north of the equator is autumn, cold and dry. The temperament needs a known birth time. So your Sun and Moon sign meaning is never read alone: Canopy reads not only the superficial Sun-sign Libra personality traits but the whole person, through your temperament, the lord of your rising sign, your Moon, your almuten and the dignity of every planet.

Star signs vs Sun signs: are they the same thing?

In everyday use, yes: your star sign is the sign the Sun held when you were born. The old astrologers would have asked which star you meant, since the Sun was one of seven wandering stars, al-kawākib al-sayyāra, each with a sign of its own. Canopy gives you the sign, house and dignity of all seven, from the Sun and Moon to Saturn, with your rising sign and ten Arabic lots.

Why can't a rising sign quiz find my Ascendant?

Because the rising sign is a matter of the clock, not of character. The Greeks called the rising degree the hōroskopos, the watcher of the hour, and our word horoscope comes from it: as the sky turns, a new sign climbs over the eastern horizon about every two hours. Canopy finds the zodiac sign rising and Moon sign at your birth from your birth date, time and place, the same three facts the old astrologers needed.

Which astrology house rules career?

The tenth. In the tradition the tenth house, at the top of the chart where the Midheaven usually falls, is the house of profession, rank and reputation, and the sixth, the house of servants, governs service. Canopy casts your chart in whole-sign houses and works as a career astrology chart too: it shows the sign of your Midheaven and any planets in your tenth house, and whatever your star sign, Leo, Libra, Scorpio or any other, your career is read from there and from the planets passing through it.

What career suits my zodiac sign?

Zodiac lists of Cancer careers start and stop at the Sun sign. The old authors judged profession from the whole chart: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos takes the quality of action from Mercury, Venus and Mars, found by their relation to the Sun and the Midheaven, so a Capricorn or Aquarius career is read from those planets' condition rather than from the Sun sign. Canopy shows your Midheaven's sign, the house each planet stands in and every planet's essential dignity.

What is the best Leo star sign career?

Not one the Sun sets alone. A Sun in Leo stands in its own sign, a strong testimony, but the old authors looked for profession to the Midheaven, its lord and the planets of action. Leo on the Midheaven is the royal placement in Canopy's reading: high office, the magistrate's seat and the management of gold, the Leo profession at its fullest. Canopy shows which sign holds your Midheaven, with its reading, and your Sun's house and dignity beside every other planet's.

What are the best jobs for Capricorn?

A Sun sign does not fix a job, so the career of Capricorn natives runs as wide as their charts. Capricorn on the Midheaven is the clearer signature. It is Saturn's sign and Mars's exaltation, and Canopy's reading for it points to building, land and estates, and a slow climb through institutions, with recognition that comes late but lasts. Canopy shows the sign on your Midheaven and Saturn's dignity in your chart.

What are Aries, Taurus and Gemini midheaven careers?

Each follows the planet that rules the sign. Aries midheaven careers belong to Mars: in Canopy's reading, drawn from the Picatrix and the classical Arabic authors, they are command and martial skill, the surgeon's knife, and work with iron and fire. Midheaven in Aries careers go further when Mars is exalted in Capricorn than when he is in his fall in Cancer. Taurus midheaven careers belong to Venus, the maker of beautiful things, the tailor, jeweller and musician; Gemini midheaven careers to Mercury, with writing, accounts and commerce; and in each the lord's dignity decides how far they reach.

Is there a midheaven calculator free to use?

Canopy is an app for iPhone and Android rather than a free web tool, but it works as a career birth chart calculator: give it the date, time and place of your birth and it calculates your Midheaven, the degree of the zodiac culminating at that moment, and reads it by sign. Those readings, drawn from the classical Arabic authors, speak to career, rank and reputation, and the chart weighs every planet's dignity beside them.

Can Canopy time a job interview or a money decision?

Yes. Elections has purposes for job applications and resumes, job interviews and career meetings, negotiations, and investments and financial decisions: pick one and a date range, and Canopy finds the best windows in it. Day to day, the reading's Wealth area follows money as its Career area follows work.

Can Canopy find the best day for surgery?

It can point to the most favorable windows by the electional rules of the tradition. Elections has a Medical Procedures & Healing purpose for an elective surgery or the start of a treatment: give it the dates your doctor has offered and Canopy scores the windows within them. This is astrological guidance only, not medical advice; the medical decision rests with you and your doctor.

Does Canopy use tropical or sidereal astrology?

Tropical. Canopy follows the zodiac of Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, measured from the spring equinox, so in a tropical astrology birth chart the sign dates keep step with the seasons: Taurus dates run from about April 20 to May 20, the exact day shifting a little from year to year. Traditional Arabian astrology synthesized knowledge from Babylonian, Sabian, Greek and Vedic sources alongside its own, but it uses the tropical zodiac, not the sidereal, as the seasons themselves were held to be a fixture of astrological influence. Canopy does not offer a sidereal zodiac.

What does a rising sign in Sagittarius mean?

The rising sign is your first whole-sign house, and the planet that rules it is the lord of your Ascendant. With Sagittarius rising, Jupiter takes that role and the houses run on from there, Capricorn the 2nd through Scorpio the 12th; with a rising sign in Virgo it is Mercury, in Taurus Venus, and with an ascendant sign in Cancer the Moon. Canopy shows your rising sign with its own reading, each planet's house counted from it, and every planet's essential dignity.

When is my Saturn return?

Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to travel the zodiac, so it comes back to the place it held at your birth around age 29 or 30, again near 59, and near 88. Canopy's natal chart shows the sign and house Saturn held when you were born, and its daily transits show where Saturn is moving now. Understanding your strongest and weakest planets and their dignities provides tools and remediation options to navigate difficult periods in your life, such as your Saturn return or planetary retrogrades: Canopy grades each planet's dignity, and its Almuten section gives the lord of your nativity with its condition and remedies.

What does the right side of a birth chart mean?

Chart wheels, Canopy's included, put the Ascendant, the eastern horizon, on the left, so the right side of the chart is the western half around the Descendant, roughly the 4th to the 9th houses. The daily turn of the sky carries every planet up from the Ascendant to the Midheaven and down to the Descendant, so a planet on the upper right had passed the Midheaven at your birth and was heading to set.

How does an IC calculator work?

It finds your Midheaven, the degree of the zodiac culminating at the meridian at your birth, and takes the degree directly opposite: the Imum Coeli, the lowest part of the sky, the angle of home, roots and the end of all matters. Both angles turn through the whole zodiac in a day, so an exact birth time is needed. Canopy works as an imum coeli calculator this way, showing the IC beside the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant and Vertex among your chart's Key Angles, with its own reading by sign.

What house is my Sun sign in?

Count from your rising sign. In whole-sign houses, the oldest house method in the tradition and the one Canopy uses, the rising sign is the 1st house and each sign after it is the next, round to the 12th, so your Sun's house is the place its sign holds in that count. Canopy does the counting for every planet, your Venus and Mars included, and shows each one's house from the 1st to the 12th.

Can I use Canopy as a Placidus chart calculator?

No. Canopy casts every chart in whole-sign houses and has no Placidus option. Whole house vs Placidus, as the choice is often put, sets the oldest house method of the tradition, in which each sign is one house counted from your rising sign, against the system named for the seventeenth-century monk Placidus de Titis, which divides the sky between the angles by time. Canopy keeps the older method; the guide to Arabic astrology sets the two beside Porphyry's.

What's in my 12th house?

Your 12th house is the sign just before your rising sign, so any 12th house astrology calculator needs your birth time as well as the date. The tradition called it the house of hidden enemies, confinement and sorrow, and also the place of Saturn's joy. Canopy shows which planets stand there, each with a reading for that house, and the natal chart's Conditions section notes when Mars or Saturn is its lord.

Does Canopy work as a stellium calculator?

Yes. Your natal chart's Patterns section flags a stellium wherever three or more planets gather in one sign, alongside the grand trine, T-square, grand cross and yod. Stellium is a later name; the older method weighs the planet that rules the crowded sign, host to every planet lodged there. Because Canopy counts whole-sign houses, a crowded sign is also a crowded house, so the chart shows at once which area of life the stellium fills, and every planet's dignity, its ruler's included.

Does Canopy have a birthday compatibility calculator?

Not yet: chart compatibility is coming soon. Such calculators usually match two Sun signs, while the traditional astrologers compared whole charts, which take birth times as well as dates. Until then Canopy reads your half of the match: your Venus sign and its dignity, and your Descendant, al-Ghārib, the western angle the tradition gave to the partner and the spouse, with a reading for its sign.

Is there a Sun Moon rising compatibility calculator?

Canopy sets out your own Sun, Moon and rising signs together, and comparing two charts is coming soon. The old authors built a match from the same pieces: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, in its chapter on marriage, judges it by how the Sun and Moon of the two charts regard each other, and the tradition read the partner from the seventh house, the sign opposite the rising sign.

Can I check natal chart compatibility free on this website?

This website has no calculator; Canopy's charts are cast in the app. There your natal chart already carries two of the old marks of partnership among its Arabic lots, the Lot of Marriage, Sahm al-Tazwīj, and the Lot of Eros, Sahm al-ʿIshq, each read by the sign it falls in. When the daily reading's Lot Activation finds the Moon crossing one of them, it reads the Lot of Marriage for union, commitment and partnership and the Lot of Eros for desire and attraction.

Is Canopy a zodiac dating app?

No. Canopy won't match you with anyone, but it can time the date. In Elections, Planning Romantic Dates searches the dates you choose for the windows the old rules favor, and Proposals & Engagements and Wedding Day & Marriage do the same when the question grows.

What should I know about Libra rising compatibility?

That it runs through Mars. Your Descendant, the setting point opposite the Ascendant, always falls in the seventh sign from your rising sign, your seventh whole-sign house and the house of marriage. With Libra rising that sign is Aries, so Mars rules your partnerships, while Venus, lord of Libra and the natural significator of marriage, rules you, and the match is read through how Venus and Mars stand in your chart. Each rising sign sets its own: Gemini rising, Descendant Sagittarius, gives the partner to generous Jupiter. Canopy reads your Descendant by its sign and shows the dignity of both planets.

Is there a tarot card for my sign today?

Tarot came out of fifteenth-century Italy, centuries after the great Arabic astrologers wrote, and it is no part of their tradition. In place of a Capricorn tarot card today or a Pisces tarot card today, Canopy deals your daily reading as a deck of cards drawn from the sky itself: tonight's lunar mansion, the planet ruling the hour, the Angel of the Day, and cards read against your chart, such as the house the Moon lights today. A Cancer tarot horoscope deals every Cancer the same card; several of Canopy's are yours alone.

Does Canopy have an astrology newsletter?

Canopy's readings live in the app rather than in a newsletter: a newsletter is written once for all its readers, while Canopy's daily reading is cast each day from your own chart and today's sky. A Daily Reading notification can tell you each morning that it is ready, and Home Screen widgets keep tonight's lunar mansion and the planetary hour in view without opening the app.

Tonight's sky is waiting.

Your chart takes a minute to enter and a lifetime to read.
