Betelgeuse star meaning: the name Yad al-Jawzāʾ

The Betelgeuse star meaning begins with a misreading. The name comes from the Arabic Yad al-Jawzāʾ, "the hand of al-Jawzāʾ", the Arabic figure of the stars the Greeks called Orion; a thirteenth-century misreading of its initial y as b gave the Latin its "Bet-". In Betelgeuse astrology Canopy keeps the Arabic, printing Yad al-Jawzāʾ beside the Betelgeuse fixed star on the Chart tab, the Today screen and its talisman screens; its natal reading glosses it "Hand of Orion".

The Arabs also called the sign Gemini al-Jawzāʾ, the sign whose last degree the star now holds. Betelgeuse is not one of the fifteen Behenian stars; it is one of the twenty other classical stars in Canopy's list of 35.

Where the Betelgeuse fixed star sits

By tropical longitude the Betelgeuse fixed star stood at 29°06′ Gemini in 2025; on October 25, 2026, its star page in Canopy shows 29°07′, a fraction of a degree short of 0° Cancer, the June solstice point. At the app's precession rate of 50.29″ a year, its degree crosses into Cancer around 2089. Canopy shows the star at magnitude 0.50.

The star itself, the red shoulder of Orion, lies 16 degrees south of the ecliptic, so its degree and the star do not reach the horizon together; it rises everywhere except south of about 83°S. No other star on Canopy's list shares its stretch of the zodiac: the nearest, El Nath at 22°55′ Gemini, lies more than six degrees back, so their three-degree natal orbs never overlap.

Betelgeuse in astrology: a Martial star of Mars and Mercury

Canopy files Betelgeuse as a Martial star of the natures of Mars and Mercury: the badge on its star page, the chip "Star: Martial" on the Chart tab, "Star nature: Mars–Mercury" on the Today screen. Among its neighbors in Orion, Canopy gives Bellatrix, the other shoulder, Mars and Mercury as well, and Rigel, Rijl al-Jawzāʾ, the foot, Jupiter and Saturn.

When Betelgeuse is the Today screen's leading fixed-star contact, the card adds "Seek: martial honor, overcoming conflict" and "Avoid: unnecessary aggression". The star page's Traditional Uses line reads: "Talismans for victory in conflicts and favor with authority figures."

Betelgeuse conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

Canopy calculates your chart from your birth date, time and place and reads Betelgeuse by conjunction. When the star, precessed to your birth date, lies within three degrees of one of the seven classical planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or a lunar Node, the Chart tab lists it under Other Conjunctions and the star page gives the reading, drawn from the classical sources: "Yad al-Jawzāʾ (Hand of Orion) brings martial honor, preferment, and fortune in warfare. When conjunct a natal planet, you have courage, competitive spirit, and the ability to overcome obstacles through direct action. Success comes through boldness."

That reading serves every contact, Betelgeuse conjunct the Sun, the Moon, Mars or the North Node, on the Ascendant or the Midheaven; Canopy does not split it by planet or test the IC or the Descendant. A natal Sun in orb means a birth from about June 17 to 23. Transits to the star appear on the Today screen within two degrees, and the full reading's Fixed Star Influences rows reuse this same natal text.

How to make a Betelgeuse talisman: red coral and wormwood

Canopy pairs Betelgeuse with red coral and wormwood, the Gemstone and Herb rows of the Correspondences card on the star's own page. The classical Behenian lists gave a stone and an herb to fifteen stars and do not include Betelgeuse, so the pairing is Canopy's. A window's About & Correspondences page does not repeat it; it reads "Betelgeuse (Yad al-Jawzāʾ) is a martial fixed star of the nature of Mars and Mercury" and links to the star page.

Canopy gives no method of making, and the planets' own talismans follow other rules: see the Mars talisman and the Mercury talisman.

When to make a Betelgeuse talisman: the Betelgeuse election

The Betelgeuse talisman and the Betelgeuse election are one search in Canopy. A moment qualifies only while the star's zodiac degree, not the star above the horizon, is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven and the Moon applies to it by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees. That puts her in the last three degrees of Gemini, Aries, Leo, Libra or Aquarius, so the refusal of a Moon in Scorpio or Capricorn never touches this star.

A moment is set aside if the Moon is combust, applies by square or opposition to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, or by conjunction to an afflicted planet, an undignified Mars or Saturn, or the South Node, or if Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet stands within three degrees of the star. Two rules fall hard here. From about June 10 to 29 the Sun is near the star, so a conjoining Moon is combust. And Mars has its fall in Cancer, just past it: with Mars at 1° Cancer, every Betelgeuse moment is set aside until Mars is more than three degrees past it.

A moment that passes scores, out of ten, 6 for a Moon conjunction or 3 for a sextile or trine, 2 for the angle, 1 for a waxing Moon and 1 for a Moon not void of course; 70 percent is Excellent, 50 Good. The star's Martial nature does not count. A waxing Moon at 28° Gemini, not void, conjoining the star as its degree culminates scores 100; void, as she may be so near the sign's end, 90. A waning, void Moon at 28° Libra trining it as its degree rises scores 50, still listed.

With the degree so close to 0° Cancer, both angles cross it at nearly the same pace at any latitude from the tropics to northern Europe, so a window lasts eight or nine minutes. The Martial nature counts elsewhere: in Canopy's purpose searches, a wedding or a launch, Betelgeuse's degree on the Ascendant or Midheaven sets a moment aside (see electional astrology). The rules every star shares are under fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy.

Finding a Betelgeuse window in Canopy

Open the Talismans tab and choose Fixed Star Talismans, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab. The picker lists all 35 stars with their Arabic names, the fifteen Behenian preselected: tap None, choose Betelgeuse, set the place, a range of up to about six months and any filters, and tap Search Stars. Scanning needs a subscription.

The filters cover the Moon's phase and motion, the angle and the lunar mansion; with Betelgeuse alone, the mansion filter set to al-Dhirāʿ, the Forearm, keeps only the conjunctions. Results sort Soonest or Top Rated. Each window opens as Betelgeuse Talisman or Betelgeuse Election, with Yad al-Jawzāʾ beneath, its score and "Why this time?". Canopy keeps the best-scored windows per star, so expect a short list.

Questions

What is the meaning of the Betelgeuse star?

Betelgeuse comes from the Arabic Yad al-Jawzāʾ, the hand of al-Jawzāʾ, the Arabic figure of Orion; a thirteenth-century misreading turned its y into a b. Canopy reads it as a Martial star of Mars and Mercury, giving martial honor and success through boldness.

What does Betelgeuse conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven mean?

Canopy gives one reading for any contact within three degrees, to a planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or a lunar Node: courage, competitive spirit and the ability to overcome obstacles through direct action. A natal Sun in orb means a birth from about June 17 to 23.

How do you make a Betelgeuse talisman?

Canopy pairs Betelgeuse with red coral and wormwood on the star's own page, under its natures of Mars and Mercury, and times the work to the minutes when its degree holds the Ascendant or Midheaven as the Moon applies to it. The Behenian lists do not include it.

When is the best time to make a Betelgeuse talisman?

When its degree, about 29° Gemini, is within one degree of the Ascendant or Midheaven and an unafflicted Moon applies to it by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees, with Mars, Saturn and the South Node clear of the star. A Moon conjunction scores highest.

What is Betelgeuse in Vedic astrology?

Indian astrology usually links Betelgeuse with Ārdrā (आर्द्रा), “the moist one”, the sixth nakshatra, 6°40′ to 20°00′ of sidereal Gemini, whose deity is Rudra. The match is disputed: some sources name Alhena, and by sidereal longitude Betelgeuse falls just short of that span. Canopy follows the Arabian tradition and the tropical zodiac.
