The Mercury talisman: how and when to make it

Tilsam ʿUṭārid — the talisman of Mercury

Mercury talisman meaning: speech, study and trade

A Mercury talisman, in the Arabic tradition, was an image made under the planet ʿUṭārid for the matters of his nature: speech, writing, study and trade. The handbook of the art, the Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm, known in Latin as the Picatrix, set beside each planet its colors, stones, plants and incenses, and made the moment of making the heart of the work: a talisman of Mercury was begun when Mercury stood strong. Canopy keeps both halves. It shows what it pairs with Mercury, and it searches the sky for the few minutes in which a Mercury talisman could be begun.

Each window opens on a page titled Mercury Talisman, Tilsam ʿUṭārid. Its purpose line reads "Speech, study, commerce, and the messages we send", and its note names the talisman's ends as "clarity of speech, trade, and messages that must arrive intact."

This page treats the subject as history and as timing: it gives no construction steps and makes no claim that a talisman works. The mechanics all seven planets share are on the planetary talismans page.

How to make a Mercury talisman: the correspondences

Timing was paired with matter. Canopy's Correspondences screen, al-Munāsabāt, gives Mercury six rows drawn from the classical correspondences, and the window's own page adds a separate Talisman Correspondences block:

Mercury's correspondences in Canopy
RowWhat Canopy shows for Mercury
Fumigation (al-Bakhūr)Mastic (Mustaka) or storax (Asturak)
Herb (al-Ḥashīsha)The same two resins, mastic or storax
Metal (al-Maʿdan)Mixed metals or brass (al-Khalīṭ) on the Correspondences screen; quicksilver in the Talisman Correspondences block
Color (al-Lawn)Mixed, variegated
Gemstone (al-Jawhar)Agate

The Herb row repeats the fumigation: mastic and storax are resins burned as incense, not garden herbs. The metal has two answers in the app itself: mixed metals or brass, al-Khalīṭ, "the mixture", on the Correspondences screen, and quicksilver, the metal that still bears the planet's name in English, in the Talisman Correspondences block on the window's About & Correspondences page. Canopy shows both, and so does this page.

All seven planets' correspondences are compared under talismanic timing. Beyond the materials, what Canopy adds is the time.

The planetary hour of Mercury and his day

Every Mercury talisman window falls in a planetary hour of Mercury: the Timing block on each window's page names Mercury (ʿUṭārid) as Hour Ruler, and the scoring factors always include "Mercury rules the hour", worth three points.

The hours run in the Chaldean order, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, twelve unequal hours of day from sunrise and twelve of night. Mercury is lord of Wednesday, so on a Wednesday he rules the first and eighth hours of daylight and the third and tenth of the night that follows; on any day he rules three or four of the twenty-four.

Wednesday is weighed, not required: a window on Mercury's own day gains two points, listed as "Mercury rules the planetary day". Canopy counts that day from sunrise, while the Day Ruler box follows the calendar; as the in-app article Talismans and Their Timing puts it, "Before sunrise the two can name different days."

The free planetary hours calculator on this site shows the ruler of the present hour, and all of today's, for the city you choose.

When to make a Mercury talisman: the Mercury talisman election

Inside an hour of Mercury, Canopy sets aside every moment that fails a single test:

  • On an angle. Mercury within 3° of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, for the place you search from.
  • Dignified. Gemini and Virgo are his domiciles, and Virgo his exaltation too, the one sign where a planet holds both. Elsewhere a lesser dignity will do: by night Libra and Aquarius give him triplicity, and he holds a term in every sign.
  • Never in detriment or fall. Sagittarius, his detriment, and Pisces, his detriment and fall at once, are closed to him; no term or face there reopens them.
  • Direct and clear of the Sun. Not retrograde, and more than 11° from the Sun.
  • The Moon applying. By conjunction, sextile or trine, within 8°.
  • Unafflicted. Neither the Moon nor Mercury applying to a square or opposition with Mars or Saturn, and the Moon more than 8.5° from the Sun and clear of the South Node.

Most of these gates apply to every planet (see planetary talismans and essential dignities); what is Mercury's own is his signs and his trouble with the Sun.

Mercury and the Sun

No planet is harder to catch. Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, so an 11° clearance takes much of his range, and three or four times a year he turns retrograde for about three weeks, every moment of which is set aside. There is no exception for cazimi: many medieval astrologers held a planet in the very heart of the Sun to be strengthened rather than burned, but here a cazimi Mercury is simply within 11° of the Sun.

The angles narrow things further. Tied to the Sun, Mercury reaches the Ascendant only in the hours around sunrise and the Midheaven only within about two hours of solar noon, so his hours from late afternoon through the first half of the night all but never hold a window. A week with none is common; the results screen then reads "No moment worthy of a talisman in this stretch" and "Widen the search."

A Mercury window set aside, and one that passes

Take two imagined skies. In the first, in an hour of Mercury, he stands in Gemini a degree from the Midheaven with the Moon applying to him by trine, but he is retrograde, and the moment is set aside before it is ever scored. In Pisces, his detriment and fall together, he would have failed outright.

In the second, Mercury is in Virgo, direct and well clear of the Sun, within 3° of the Midheaven in his own hour. The Moon applies to him by trine, clear of the Sun and the South Node, and no square or opposition to Mars or Saturn is forming. That moment passes, and only then is it scored.

How a Mercury window is scored

A window that passes is scored out of 18 points. Dignity weighs most, from five for a domicile down to one for a face, and only one dignity counts, so Virgo and Gemini both earn Mercury five; his exaltation in Virgo adds nothing to the number. The Ascendant gives three and the Midheaven two, the hour three, Wednesday two, a waxing Moon one, the Moon's condition up to two, and Venus or Jupiter one each when they aspect Mercury by conjunction, sextile or trine. Venus, never far from the Sun herself, can reach him only by conjunction or sextile.

The second sky, on a Wednesday under a waxing Moon that is not void of course, and without the benefics, would earn five for Virgo, two for the Midheaven, three for the hour, two for the day, one for the waxing Moon and two for her condition: 15 of 18, about 83 percent. Unlike Venus and Jupiter, Mercury can reach the full 100. A window needs 50 percent to be listed; 70 or more is called Excellent, the rest Good.

Why a Mercury window lasts only minutes

An hour of Mercury lasts roughly an hour, longer or shorter with the season; his window is far shorter. The angles move on by about a degree every four minutes, and Canopy narrows the span to the minutes in which the Moon moves only a fraction of a degree against Mercury: roughly ten minutes either side of the exact time each result names, as the planetary talismans guide explains. Set Reminder alerts you 30 minutes before, Save to Calendar adds it to your calendar, and Share sends it on.

Finding a Mercury talisman window in Canopy

Open the Talismans tab and choose Planetary Talismans. The screen reads from the top:

  • Location. Your current location or your birth place, with Change to set another. The angles are local, so a minute can hold a Mercury window in one city and none in the next.
  • Bodies. All seven planets to begin with; open the picker, tap None, then Mercury.
  • Filters. Moon phase, angle (ASC, MC or On Angle), Moon motion and the lunar mansions. They narrow the results; they never admit a moment the search has set aside.
  • Date Range. Seven days at first, and up to six months in one search. For Mercury, a wide range is often the difference between nothing and a choice.

Tap Search Planets. Results, sorted Soonest or Top Rated, give the window's span, the Moon's applying aspect, the exact time and the score. Each opens on a Mercury Talisman page: the time, window and score; a Timing block with Hour Ruler, Day Ruler and the Midheaven's sign; Celestial Configuration; "Why this time?", whose scoring factors begin with a line such as "Mercury in Virgo (domicile)"; and About & Correspondences. Birth data is optional; with it, each window adds a note on how it meets your nativity.

A talisman window is not an ordinary election: for a matter of Mercury itself, such as signing a contract, Canopy's Elections times the matter by its own rules (see contract signing astrology and electional astrology).

Questions

How do you make a Mercury talisman?

With Mercury's materials, at Mercury's time. Canopy shows agate, mastic or storax, mixed and variegated colors, and two metals: mixed metals or brass on one screen, quicksilver on another. It finds the time: an hour of Mercury, with Mercury dignified within 3° of the Ascendant or Midheaven, direct, more than 11° from the Sun, and the Moon applying to him. It gives no construction steps.

When is the best time to make a Mercury talisman?

In Canopy's reckoning, inside an hour of Mercury, with Mercury within 3° of the Ascendant or Midheaven, dignified and never in Sagittarius or Pisces, direct, more than 11° from the Sun, and the Moon applying to him, neither of them applying by square or opposition to Mars or Saturn. Wednesday and a waxing Moon raise the score but are not required.

What metal is used for a Mercury talisman?

Canopy gives two answers, and this page reports both: mixed metals or brass (al-Khalīṭ) on its Correspondences screen, and quicksilver in the Talisman Correspondences block on a Mercury window's About & Correspondences page.

What stone represents Mercury?

Agate, in Canopy's correspondences for Mercury, beside mixed and variegated colors and a fumigation of mastic or storax.

What is the planetary hour of Mercury?

It depends on your sunrise and sunset, since the hours are unequal and local. On Wednesday, his day, Mercury rules the first hour after sunrise and the eighth; every day he rules three or four of the twenty-four. The free planetary hours calculator on this site shows them for your city.

Can you make a Mercury talisman when Mercury is retrograde?

Not in Canopy. The talisman search sets aside every moment with Mercury retrograde, so no Mercury window falls in his retrograde weeks.

Can a Mercury cazimi be used for a talisman?

Not in Canopy's talisman search. The tradition often counted a planet in the heart of the Sun as strengthened, but the search sets aside any moment with Mercury within 11° of the Sun, cazimi included.
