Rijl al-Jawzāʾ — the foot of al-Jawzāʾ, Beta Orionis

Rigel star meaning: the foot of al-Jawzāʾ

Rigel is the bright star at Orion's foot, and its name says so: the Arabic Rijl al-Jawzāʾ means "the foot of al-Jawzāʾ", the Arabic figure of Orion. That is the Rigel star meaning in brief, and where Rigel astrology begins. Canopy shows the Rigel fixed star with its Arabic name on the Chart tab, the Today screen and the star picker, badges it Benefic and gives it the natures of Jupiter and Saturn. It is not one of the fifteen Behenian stars.

Astronomers letter it Beta Orionis, yet in Canopy's catalog it outshines the Alpha, Betelgeuse, the hand of the same figure (Yad al-Jawzāʾ): magnitude 0.13 against 0.50.

The Rigel fixed star degree and its sky

The Rigel fixed star degree is about 17° of tropical Gemini: 17°10′ in Canopy's catalog for 2025, and 17°11′ on its star page's Current Position card on October 25, 2026, carried forward for precession. Natal contacts use its place on your birth date.

That degree sits on a seam. The sixth lunar mansion, al-Hanʿa, the Mark, ends at 17°09′ Gemini, so by Canopy's figures its degree has only lately crossed into the seventh, al-Dhirāʿ, the Forearm.

Rigel rises everywhere south of about 82° north. But it lies 31° south of the ecliptic, so at New York's latitude the star itself rises about two hours after its degree reaches the Ascendant; on the Midheaven it trails its degree by only some eleven minutes.

Rigel in astrology: Benefic, of Jupiter and Saturn

Canopy's badge for Rigel reads Benefic, and its star page draws the glyphs of Jupiter and Saturn under Planetary Nature. Of the three Orion stars in the app, the foot is the only Benefic: Bellatrix at the shoulder and Betelgeuse are Martial, of Mars and Mercury.

On a day when Rigel leads the Today card, the card writes "Star nature: Jupiter–Saturn" and adds Seek: mechanical ability, learning; Avoid: superficiality. The lists do not change a score.

Rigel conjunct the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant or the Midheaven

Canopy measures Rigel against the seven planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and both lunar Nodes, and counts a conjunction within three degrees. A contact shows on the Chart tab under Fixed Star Conjunctions, tagged "Star: Benefic" with its orb; the star's page gives the reading under In Your Chart.

Whether Rigel is conjunct the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the North Node, the Ascendant or the MC, every point draws the same reading, drawn from the classical sources: "Rijl al-Jawzāʾ (Foot of Orion) brings mechanical ability, inventiveness, and lasting fortune. When conjunct a natal planet, you have practical genius and the ability to build and create. Success comes through technical skill and educational pursuits."

The Sun reaches the star's degree around June 7, so births from about June 4 to June 10 have Rigel on the Sun. On transit, the Today screen's Fixed Stars card shows a planet aspecting the star within two degrees, and the full reading's Fixed Star Influences repeats the same text.

How to make a Rigel talisman

Canopy's answer to how to make a Rigel talisman is a pairing and a moment. The Correspondences card on the star's own page gives:

  • Gemstone: blue topaz.
  • Herb: sage.

That is Canopy's pairing: the classical Behenian lists, which gave their fifteen stars a stone and a plant, do not include Rigel. The star page's Traditional Uses line reads: "Talismans for mechanical success and favor in learning." A Rigel window's own correspondences card carries no data for the star; the stone and herb sit one tap further, under About Rigel. Canopy gives no method or procedure, only the materials and the moment.

When to make a Rigel talisman: the Rigel election

A Rigel election needs the star's ecliptic degree within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven while the Moon applies to it by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees of exact. Canopy tests the degree, not the star's light.

For the conjunction the Moon stands at about 15° to 17° Gemini, nearly all of it in al-Hanʿa; for a sextile, at those degrees of Aries or Leo; for a trine, of Libra or Aquarius, so her detriment and fall never enter. From about late May to mid-June a Moon at the star's degree is combust; outside those weeks she is waxing there only from about early December to late May. Tonight's mansion shows where she is now.

The shared tests, set out under fixed-star talisman windows, still apply: a Moon applying by square or opposition to one of the five planets, by conjunction to an afflicted planet, or to the South Node sets the moment aside. So does Mars conjunct Rigel: while Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet is within three degrees of the star, nothing is offered.

A passing moment scores out of ten: six for a conjunction or three for a sextile or trine, two for the angle, and one if the Moon is waxing and one if she is not void of course. So every Rigel window scores 50 to 100 percent, and 70 or more reads Excellent. The Benefic badge adds nothing here. In Canopy's purpose searches, such as a wedding, the rule that sets aside a window with a Malefic, Saturnine or Martial star on an angle touches Bellatrix and Betelgeuse, never Rigel. Windows last minutes, and the Moon holds her two degrees only three or four hours a pass, so they are few.

Two imagined Rigel windows

In one imagined sky, just after midday in early June, Rigel's degree culminates as the Moon, at 16° Gemini, closes on the star; but the Sun at 12° Gemini is four degrees from her, she is combust, and the moment is set aside. In another, on a late-April afternoon with the Sun near 5° Taurus, the degree culminates as a waxing crescent Moon at 16° Gemini, not void of course, applies to the star, with no planet in reach of her squares or oppositions or near the star: 100 percent, Excellent.

Finding Rigel in Canopy

Talismans, then Fixed Star Talismans, opens the search; the Elections tab's Fixed Stars runs the same one and titles its windows "Rigel Election". The picker lists all 35 stars with their Arabic names and preselects the Behenian fifteen, so tap None, then Rigel. Set the place, or the search uses where you are, else your birth place; choose up to about six months and tap Search Stars. Scanning needs an active subscription.

Each window opens on its score and a TIMING block, then "Why this time?", naming the angle and the Moon's application, and About & Correspondences, which opens "Nature of Jupiter (al-Mushtarī)" and the window's rating, then "Rigel (Rijl al-Jawzāʾ) is a benefic fixed star of the nature of Jupiter and Saturn."
