Sualocin, al-Dulfīn: the fixed star in astrology, its talisman and its election

al-Dulfīn — the Dolphin, Alpha Delphini

Sualocin star meaning: Nicolaus, spelled backward

Sualocin is Nicolaus spelled backward. The name first appeared, with Rotanev for its neighbor Beta Delphini, in the 1814 Palermo star catalog, and together they reverse Nicolaus Venator, the Latin name of Niccolò Cacciatore, who named the two stars after himself.

The Sualocin fixed star has no classical Arabic name of its own. Canopy gives it al-Dulfīn, the Dolphin, the Arabic name of the whole constellation, so Sualocin astrology rests on what Canopy shows, not on inherited lore. Nor is it one of the fifteen Behenian stars: Canopy reads it among twenty stars beyond that list.

Where the Sualocin fixed star sits: 17°44′ Aquarius

By tropical longitude Sualocin stood at 17°44′ Aquarius in 2025; its star page, which carries the position forward for precession, reads 17°45′ on October 25, 2026. The degree lies in the twenty-fifth lunar mansion, Saʿd al-Akhbiya, the Lucky One of the Hidden Things, a Saʿd, or fortunate, mansion. No other of Canopy's thirty-five stars lies within three degrees; the nearest, Deneb Algedi, is about six degrees on.

At Magnitude 3.80 on that page, it is the faintest of the thirty-five; the next, Algorab, is 2.94. It lies about 33 degrees north of the ecliptic, but Canopy tests only its degree: Sualocin “rising” in the app means 17°44′ Aquarius on the Ascendant, whether or not the star itself is up.

Sualocin in astrology: a benefic star of Saturn and Mars

Canopy files Sualocin as a Benefic star with the natures of Saturn and Mars: its star page shows the Benefic badge and, on its Planetary Nature card, the glyphs of both planets, and a Sualocin window calls it “a benefic fixed star of the nature of Saturn and Mars”. Saturn and Mars are the two malefics, and the three other stars Canopy gives that pair, Algol, Algorab and Zuben Elgenubi, are labeled Malefic. This page reports both values as the app shows them.

On a day Sualocin leads the Today screen's Fixed Stars card, the card gives “Star nature: Saturn–Mars”, with playfulness and adaptability to seek and rigidity to avoid.

Sualocin conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

Canopy calculates your chart from your birth date, time and place, takes Sualocin back to its degree at your birth, and tests the conjunction alone, within three degrees, with the seven classical planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and the lunar Nodes. A contact appears on the Chart tab under Other Conjunctions and opens the star's page, whose reading runs:

“Al-Dulfīn (The Dolphin) brings playfulness, swimming through life's waters with grace, and connection to maritime affairs. When conjunct a natal planet, you have adaptability and cheerful nature. Luck comes through water-related matters and flexibility.”

Canopy writes no separate version for each point: Sualocin on the natal Sun reads as it does on the Moon, the Ascendant or the Midheaven. Its star page also names the house it falls in and marks it within three degrees of any angle, the Descendant and Imum Coeli included. A natal Sun within orb belongs to births from roughly February 3 to 9.

How to make a Sualocin talisman: aquamarine and rosemary

Canopy pairs Sualocin with aquamarine and rosemary, the Gemstone and Herb on the Correspondences card of its star page. The classical Behenian lists do not include Sualocin, so the pairing is Canopy's own; aquamarine is also the stone it gives Fomalhaut. The Traditional Uses line names the purpose: “Talismans for safe sea voyages and adaptability in changing circumstances.”

The window's own page does not repeat them: its correspondence card reads “Correspondence data unavailable for this star”, and its About Sualocin row leads back to the star page. Canopy gives no method of making. For Saturn, the star's first planet, see the Saturn talisman.

When to make a Sualocin talisman: the Sualocin election

In Canopy the Sualocin talisman and the Sualocin election are one search. A moment qualifies while 17°44′ Aquarius is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven and the Moon applies to the star by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees. It is set aside if the Moon is combust or in her detriment or fall, or applies by square or opposition to one of the five planets, or by conjunction to an afflicted planet, an undignified Mars or Saturn, or the South Node; the full rules are under fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy.

Here the star's own planets are its chief hazard. Mars or Saturn within three degrees of the star sets the moment aside whatever its dignity, so even Saturn at home in Aquarius refuses it, as do the South Node and any combust or retrograde planet there; none of the five planets is in detriment or fall in Aquarius.

The Moon reaches the star five ways a month: by conjunction from Aquarius, sextile from Sagittarius or Aries, trine from Gemini or Libra, each approach three to four hours long. None passes through Capricorn or Scorpio, her detriment and fall, so no approach is lost to the Moon's sign, as some are for every star in an earth or water sign.

A passing moment scores out of ten: 6 for a conjunction or 3 for a sextile or trine, 2 for the angle, up to 2 for a Moon waxing and not void of course. Neither the benefic label nor the Saturn–Mars nature counts. A joining Moon waxes from about August 10, with the Sun in mid-Leo, until it turns combust in late January, so 100 percent falls between those dates; combustion then holds until mid-February, and after that a conjunction peaks at 90.

A waxing Moon at 16° Aquarius, not void, as the degree culminates: 100 percent, Excellent. Put Saturn at 19° Aquarius and that moment is set aside. A waning, void Moon at 16° Gemini applying by trine as the degree rises: 50 percent, Good.

Aquarius rises fast in the north: the star's degree holds the Ascendant about five and a half minutes at 40°N and four and a half in London, ten at 40°S, and the Midheaven about eight anywhere. Expect few windows.

Finding a Sualocin window in Canopy

Fixed Star Talismans, in the Talismans tab, holds the search; the Elections tab reaches it through Fixed Stars, titled Fixed Star Elections. Its list of thirty-five stars opens with the fifteen Behenian ones ticked: tap None, then Sualocin, set your place and a span of up to six months, and tap Search Stars.

Set the lunar-mansion filter to mansion 25, Saʿd al-Akhbiya, alone and only conjunction windows remain, since a Moon joining the star always stands there. Results sort by Soonest or Top Rated; each opens as Sualocin Talisman or Sualocin Election, with its score and a “Why this time?” list.
