Fomalhaut star meaning: the mouth of the fish
Fomalhaut comes from the Arabic fam al-ḥūt, "the mouth of the fish". The fish is the Southern Fish, Piscis Austrinus, and the name renders the Greek catalog's description of its chief star as the one at the fish's mouth. In Fomalhaut astrology as Canopy practices it, the Fomalhaut fixed star is listed as Fam al-Ḥūt, marked Royal and given the planetary natures of Venus and Mercury.
Canopy marks four stars Royal: Fomalhaut, Aldebaran, Regulus and Antares. The other three are among the fifteen Behenian stars of the talismanic tradition; Fomalhaut is not, which shapes what the app gives for its talisman.
The Fomalhaut fixed star degree: 4° Pisces
By tropical longitude Fomalhaut stands at 4°13′ Pisces in Canopy's catalog for 2025; its star page, which moves it on for precession, reads about 4°14′ in late October 2026. Natal contacts use the star's place on your birth date: about 3°18′ Pisces for 1960 births. The degree sits in the last minutes of the 26th lunar mansion, al-Fargh al-Awwal, the First Spout, a degree and a half short of Deneb at 5°41′ Pisces, which shares Fomalhaut's Venus-Mercury nature.
The star itself lies about 21° south of the ecliptic, at declination −29.6°. From 40° north it stands no higher than about 20° in the south, and north of about 60° it never rises.
Fomalhaut in astrology: a Royal star of Venus and Mercury
Fomalhaut in astrology is read by its nature and its contacts. Beyond the star page's Royal badge, a talisman window's About & Correspondences page opens with "Royal Star · Watcher of the South". Its catalog lines, Seek: mystical vision, fame, and Avoid: deceit, dishonest dealings, appear only on the Today screen's fixed-star card, when Fomalhaut leads the day's contacts.
In Canopy's purpose searches, such as a wedding or a launch, a moment is set aside when a malefic-natured star's degree is on the Ascendant or Midheaven; Fomalhaut, a Royal star, never triggers that veto.
Fomalhaut conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven
Canopy checks Fomalhaut against the seven planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and both lunar Nodes, by conjunction within three degrees; it does not test the IC. A contact shows on the Chart tab's Fixed Star Conjunctions page under Other Conjunctions, tagged "Star: Royal", and on the star's page under In Your Chart.
One reading serves every point, so Fomalhaut conjunct the Sun, the Moon, Venus, Saturn or the North Node reads alike. Drawn from the classical sources, it calls Fam al-Ḥūt "a Royal Star bringing fame, occult interests, and possible dishonor", and on a natal planet: "you have idealistic vision and mystical leanings, but must maintain integrity to preserve your gains. A star of dreams and their fulfillment or dissolution."
The Sun reaches the star's degree around February 22, so births from about February 19 to 25 carry a Sun contact; Moon and angle contacts need the birth hour and place.
How to make a Fomalhaut talisman
Canopy's answer to how to make a Fomalhaut talisman is two materials, two natures and a moment. The star's own page gives, on its Correspondences and Planetary Nature cards:
- Gemstone: aquamarine.
- Herb: watercress.
- Planetary Nature: Venus and Mercury.
This is Canopy's pairing: the classical lists of the fifteen Behenian stars, each with its stone and plant, do not include Fomalhaut. A Fomalhaut window's page lists no stone or herb; they are one tap further, through its About Fomalhaut row. The star page's Traditional Uses line names the purpose: talismans for the realization of dreams, "when used with proper intention." Canopy describes no engraved image or procedure, and this page makes no claim that a talisman works.
When to make a Fomalhaut talisman: the Fomalhaut election
A Fomalhaut window needs two things at once: the star's ecliptic degree within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, never the Descendant, and the Moon applying to the star by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees. Canopy tests the star's degree, not the star, and this far south the two part company: from 40° north, Fomalhaut clears the horizon nearly two hours after its degree rises. North of 60°, where the star never rises, its degree still does, and windows still come.
The Moon reaches an aspect to 4° Pisces five times a month; two approaches are always set aside: the sextile from early Capricorn, her detriment, and the trine from early Scorpio, her fall. That leaves the conjunction from early Pisces, in al-Fargh al-Awwal; the sextile from early Taurus, in al-Thurayyā; and the trine from early Cancer, in al-Nathra.
The shared tests under fixed-star talisman windows also set moments aside, among them a combust Moon, her applying square or opposition to one of the five planets, and Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet within three degrees of the star.
A passing moment is scored out of ten: six for the Moon's conjunction or three for a sextile or trine, two for the angle, and up to two for a Moon waxing and not void of course. Fomalhaut windows therefore score 50 to 100 percent, 70 and above marked Excellent; the Royal nature adds nothing here. A Moon joining the star is waxing and clear of the Sun only from about late August to mid-February, so only then can a window reach 100 percent. Each is brief: the Ascendant crosses the two degrees around Fomalhaut's degree in about five minutes at 40° north, the Midheaven in under eight.
Two imagined Fomalhaut moments
In one imagined sky in mid-February, the degree culminates as the Moon at 3° Pisces closes on the star, but the Sun, at 27° Aquarius, is six degrees from her: combust, set aside. In another, in April, the degree rises as a waxing Moon at 3° Cancer, not void of course, applies by trine with every other test clear: 70 percent, Excellent. From 3° Scorpio the same trine would never be offered.
Finding Fomalhaut in Canopy
Open Talismans, then Fixed Star Talismans; the Elections tab's Fixed Stars runs the same search and titles each window "Fomalhaut Election". The picker lists all 35 stars with their Arabic names and opens with the fifteen Behenian stars selected, Fomalhaut not among them: tap None, then Fomalhaut. Choose the place, as angles differ by city, set a range of up to six months, and tap Search Stars. Searching needs an active subscription.
A search keeps the best-scoring few windows for each star, not every passing moment. Each opens on a Fomalhaut Talisman page with Fam al-Ḥūt beneath, its score, the exact time, "Why this time?", naming the angle and the Moon's approach, and a link to the star's page.
