Dhanab al-Dajājah — the tail of the hen, Alpha Cygni

Deneb star meaning: Dhanab al-Dajājah, the tail of the hen

Deneb means "tail", and the full Deneb star meaning lies in the Arabic phrase it was cut from, dhanab al-dajājah, "the tail of the hen". Where Greek astronomers drew a swan in Cygnus, Arabic star lore drew a hen, and this star sits at its tail. Because it also marks the Greek swan's tail, the name is often glossed "tail of the swan", but the Arabic word means hen. Canopy reads the Deneb fixed star in the Arabian tradition of astrology and names it Dhanab al-Dajājah on the Chart tab, the Today screen and the star picker.

The Alfonsine Tables wrote the phrase Denebadigege; Deneb Adige is a variant of it. Deneb Algedi, the goat's tail, and Denebola, the lion's, are other stars in Canopy; Deneb Kaitos, the tail of Cetus, is not among its thirty-five.

Where the Deneb fixed star sits: 5°42′ Pisces

By tropical longitude Deneb stood at about 5°41′ Pisces in 2025; on October 25, 2026, its star page in Canopy reads 5°42′. The degree falls in the twenty-seventh lunar mansion, al-Fargh al-Thānī, the Second Spout. Canopy gives the star magnitude 1.25; it is the brightest star of Cygnus and a corner of the Summer Triangle with Vega and Altair.

The degree and the star stand far apart, for Deneb lies nearly sixty degrees north of the ecliptic. North of about latitude 45° it never sets, and when its degree reaches the Midheaven the star itself crossed the meridian about an hour and three quarters earlier. Canopy measures the degree, not where the star stands.

Deneb in astrology: a benefic of Venus and Mercury

Canopy files Deneb as a benefic star of the natures of Venus and Mercury. The reading on its star page speaks of "a Venus-Mercury nature that pours lyrical inspiration and beauty of expression into whatever it touches." When Deneb holds the Today screen's leading fixed-star contact, the card adds what to seek, artistic inspiration and eloquence, and what to avoid, harsh confrontation and purely martial workings.

Anyone seeking a spiritual meaning finds the app's answer in that same reading, which ends on idealism, beauty and the preservation of truth through art.

Deneb conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

From your birth date, time and place, Canopy casts your chart and measures Deneb's degree against the seven classical planets, the Ascendant and Midheaven, the Vertex and both lunar Nodes. Within three degrees, by conjunction only, the Chart tab lists the contact under Other Conjunctions with its orb and "Star: Benefic", and the star page gives the reading, drawn from the classical sources: "When conjunct a natal planet, you have poetic fluency, musical genius, or a gift for compelling narrative. Distinction comes through creative mastery, and the star inclines you toward idealism, beauty, and the preservation of truth through art."

One reading serves every point, so Deneb conjunct the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant, the Midheaven or Saturn receives it under that point's own row. The Sun reaches the degree about February 24, so a natal Sun in orb belongs to births from about February 21 to 27.

How to make a Deneb talisman: opal, rose, Venus and Mercury

Canopy answers how to make a Deneb talisman with materials and a moment, not a procedure. The Correspondences card on Deneb's star page gives its gemstone as opal and its herb as rose, and its Planetary Nature card gives Venus and Mercury. The classical Behenian lists do not include Deneb, so opal and rose are Canopy's own pairing; they live on the star page, one tap from a window's About Deneb row.

The star page's Traditional Uses line states the purpose: "Talismans for artistic excellence, eloquence, and poetic inspiration; associated with the refined enjoyment of music, verse, and all works that marry intellect with beauty." The planets keep their own rules on the Venus talisman and Mercury talisman pages.

When to make a Deneb talisman: the Deneb election

In Canopy the Deneb talisman and the Deneb election are the same search, and it admits a moment only when Deneb's degree lies within one degree of the Ascendant (rising) or the Midheaven (culminating), with the Moon applying to the star by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees. She can conjoin it from Pisces, sextile it from Taurus or Capricorn, or trine it from Cancer or Scorpio, but a Moon in Capricorn, her detriment, or Scorpio, her fall, is set aside. Deneb's Moon comes exalted in Taurus, at home in Cancer, or beside the star in Pisces.

Other faults set a window aside: a Moon within 8.5 degrees of the Sun, which rules out conjunctions from about mid-February to early March; a Moon applying by square or opposition to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, or by conjunction to an afflicted planet, an undignified Mars or Saturn, or the South Node; and Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet within three degrees of the star. Mercury, one of Deneb's own planets, is in detriment and fall in Pisces, so a Mercury that close always costs the window.

A window that passes is scored on the Moon's aspect, a conjunction counting double; the angle; and the Moon's condition, best waxing and not void of course. Conjunctions score 80 to 100 percent, sextiles and trines 50 to 70, and 70 or more reads Excellent; Deneb's benefic nature does not enter the score. With Deneb's degree rising and a waxing Moon at 4° Cancer, not void of course, applying to the trine, 3 points for the trine, 2 for the angle and 2 for the Moon make 70 percent; at 4° Scorpio the same trine is set aside. The shared rules are under fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy.

Finding Deneb in Canopy

Open Fixed Star Talismans in the Talismans tab, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab, where the same search is called Fixed Star Elections. Its star list shows all 35 stars with their Arabic names and opens with the fifteen Behenian stars selected; clear them with None and choose Deneb. Choose a place, set a range of up to about six months and tap Search Stars. Expect few windows; each opens on a page headed Deneb Talisman or Deneb Election, with its score and the lines behind it.
