Alhena star meaning: the name al-Hanʿah

The Alhena star meaning begins with a mark. The name of the Alhena fixed star comes from the Arabic al-Hanʿah, which the standard star-name references give as "the brand", the mark set on a camel's neck; Canopy prints al-Hanʿah beside the star on the Chart tab and in the star picker. Its natal reading glosses the word "The Leaning Stars". Astronomers call the star Gamma Geminorum, the bright star in the forward foot of the Twins.

The same word names a lunar mansion: Alhena marked the sixth, al-Hanʿa, a fortunate (Saʿd) mansion. Precession has since carried the star on. By Canopy's tropical spans al-Hanʿa now runs from 4°17′ to 17°09′ Gemini, while Alhena's own degree lies in the eighth mansion, al-Nathra, the Gap (0°00′ to 12°51′ Cancer), also Saʿd.

Where the Alhena fixed star sits

By tropical longitude Alhena stood at 9°27′ Cancer in 2025; Canopy's star page, moving it on for precession, shows about 9°28′ in late October 2026. So although the star belongs to Gemini, its zodiac degree is in Cancer, eleven degrees short of Castor and fourteen of Pollux. Canopy shows it at magnitude 1.93. It lies under seven degrees south of the ecliptic and is visible everywhere north of about 74°S.

Alhena in astrology: a benefic star of Mercury and Venus

Canopy files Alhena as Benefic, of the natures of Mercury and Venus, Mercury first. The Today screen gives its contacts as "Star nature: Mercury–Venus". The natal reading, drawn from the classical sources, says the star "joins the refined arts of Mercury with the grace of Venus." When Alhena is the day's leading fixed-star contact, the Today card adds what to seek, love and affection and reconciling enemies, and what to avoid, destructive workings.

In the purpose elections Alhena's degree on an angle never sets a window aside, as a Malefic, Saturnine or Martial star's can; in the fixed-star talisman search, no star's nature enters the score.

Alhena conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

Canopy calculates your chart from your birth date, time and place and reads Alhena by conjunction alone. When the star's degree, precessed to your birth date, lies within three degrees of one of the seven classical planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or either lunar Node, the Chart tab lists the contact under Other Conjunctions, and Alhena's star page gives the reading: "When conjunct a natal planet, you possess elegant speech, a natural gift for reconciliation, and deep affinity for music, poetry, and the sacred arts."

That one reading serves every point: Alhena conjunct the Sun or the Moon, Venus conjunct Alhena, Alhena on the Ascendant or the Midheaven. Canopy does not vary it by planet, nor does it test the Descendant or the IC. By 2025 positions the orb runs from about 6½° to 12½° Cancer, a little earlier for older births; the Sun crosses Alhena's degree around July 1, so a natal Sun within orb belongs roughly to births from June 28 to July 4. Transits to Alhena appear in the Full Reading under Fixed Star Influences, with the same reading as their text.

How to make an Alhena talisman: carnelian, vervain, Mercury and Venus

Alhena is not among the fifteen Behenian stars: the classical Behenian lists do not include it, so they give it no stone or herb. Canopy pairs it with carnelian and vervain all the same, on the Correspondences card of Alhena's star page, and its Traditional Uses line begins "Talismans for love, friendship, and reconciling enemies" before turning to safe passage for travelers. The window page leaves the pairing to the star page.

That is Canopy's whole prescription: a stone, an herb, the star's two planets and the window's minutes, with no method of making. A talisman timed to either planet by its own hour and dignity is a different election: see the Mercury talisman and the Venus talisman.

When to make an Alhena talisman: the Alhena election

In Canopy the Alhena talisman and the Alhena election are one search under two names. A moment qualifies only while Alhena's zodiac degree is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven: the degree, not the star, which lies off the ecliptic and meets the horizon at a different minute.

The Moon must also apply to Alhena by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees: from about 7½° to 9½° of Cancer, her own sign, for the conjunction; of Taurus or Virgo for a sextile; of Pisces for a trine. The Scorpio trine never passes, since Canopy refuses a Moon in her fall unless she joins the star in that sign. Nor may she be combust, apply by square or opposition to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, apply to conjoin an afflicted planet or an undignified Mars or Saturn, or apply to the South Node; and Alhena must have no Mars, Saturn, South Node or afflicted planet within three degrees. A moment that fails is set aside. From about the June solstice into the second week of July the Sun stands too close for a conjunction to pass.

A passing moment earns 6 points for a conjunction or 3 for a sextile or trine, 2 for the angle, and one each for a waxing Moon and a Moon not void of course: out of ten, Excellent from 70 percent, Good from 50. A waxing Moon at 8° Cancer, not void of course, conjoining Alhena as its degree rises scores 100 percent; put Mars at 11° Cancer, in his fall, and the same moment is set aside. A waning, void-of-course Moon at 8° Pisces, trining Alhena as its degree culminates, scores 50 percent, which still passes.

A window lasts minutes, since the angles move through a degree in a few, and the search keeps only the strongest few for each star. The rules every star shares are under fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy.

Finding an Alhena window in Canopy

Open the Talismans tab and choose Fixed Star Talismans, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab. The picker lists all 35 stars, the fifteen Behenian preselected: tap None, choose Alhena, with al-Hanʿah beneath it, set the place and a span of up to about six months, and tap Search Stars. With Alhena alone selected, the optional al-Nathra mansion filter leaves only the conjunctions.

Results sort Soonest or Top Rated, and with your chart saved each row adds a line on your natal Mercury, the first of Alhena's planets. Each window opens on a page headed Alhena Talisman or Alhena Election, with its reasons under "Why this time?".
