Zuben Elgenubi star meaning: the southern claw

The Zuben Elgenubi fixed star takes its name from the Arabic al-Zubānā al-Janūbī, "the southern claw", a name older than the constellation that now holds it. Before the Scales became a figure of their own, the stars of Libra were the claws of the Scorpion: this was the southern claw, and Zuben Eschamali, Beta Librae, the northern. In Zuben Elgenubi astrology Canopy keeps the Arabic name, which its natal reading glosses "Southern Claw of the Scorpion".

The half-Latin name Kiffa Australis renders the Arabic al-kiffah al-janūbiyyah, the southern pan of the scales, hence the English "South Scale". The claws also named the sixteenth lunar mansion, al-Zubānā. Zuben Elgenubi is not one of the fifteen Behenian stars but one of Canopy's twenty others.

Where the Zuben Elgenubi fixed star sits

By tropical longitude the star stood at 15°26′ Scorpio in 2025; its page in Canopy shows about 15°27′ in late October 2026, at magnitude 2.75. It lies only a third of a degree north of the ecliptic, so the Sun passes almost over it about November 7 each year, and its degree and the star itself rise nearly together. Canopy reads only the degree.

Its nearest neighbor on Canopy's list is Alphecca, the Behenian star of the Northern Crown, at 12°37′ Scorpio: a natal point between about 12½° and 15½° Scorpio is conjunct both, and the Chart tab lists each.

Zuben Elgenubi in astrology: a Malefic star of Saturn and Mars

Canopy files Zuben Elgenubi as a Malefic star of the natures of Saturn and Mars, from its star page's badge to the Today screen's "Star nature: Saturn–Mars". It is one of four Malefic stars among the 35, with Algol, Algorab and Denebola.

The app's own words about it are cautions. The star page's Traditional Uses line reads: "Rarely used in talismans due to malefic nature; requires expert handling."

Zuben Elgenubi conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

Canopy calculates your chart from your birth date, time and place and reads Zuben Elgenubi by conjunction. When the star, precessed to your birth date, lies within three degrees of a classical planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or a lunar Node, the Chart tab lists it under Other Conjunctions and the star page gives the reading, drawn from the classical sources: "Al-Zubānā al-Janūbī (Southern Claw of the Scorpion) brings malefic influence, potential for disgrace, and negative karma. When conjunct a natal planet, you may face unjust accusations or reversals. Extreme caution and ethical conduct are necessary."

That one reading serves every contact, Zuben Elgenubi conjunct the Sun or the Moon, on the Ascendant or at the Midheaven; Canopy does not split it by planet. Read it as the tradition's verdict on the star, not as a forecast. A natal Sun in orb means a birth from about November 4 to 10; an Ascendant in orb, about 12½° to 18½° Scorpio rising.

How to make a Zuben Elgenubi talisman: black tourmaline and St John's wort

Canopy pairs Zuben Elgenubi with black tourmaline and St John's wort, the Gemstone and Herb rows of the Correspondences card on its star page. The classical Behenian lists, which gave a stone and an herb to fifteen stars, do not include it, so the pairing is Canopy's; a window's About & Correspondences page does not repeat it but links to the star page. Canopy gives no method of making, only the timing. The planets of its nature have their own pages: the Saturn talisman and the Mars talisman.

When to make a Zuben Elgenubi talisman: the Zuben Elgenubi election

The Zuben Elgenubi talisman and the Zuben Elgenubi election are one search in Canopy. A moment qualifies only while the star's zodiac degree is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven and the Moon applies to it by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees. Here the sign matters. Scorpio is the Moon's fall, and a Moon in fall or detriment sets the moment aside for every star except by a conjunction in the star's own sign: a Moon at about 13½° to 15½° Scorpio may conjoin Zuben Elgenubi, but her sextile from Capricorn, her detriment, is set aside. The sextile from Virgo and the trines from Cancer and Pisces stand.

The usual afflictions also set a moment aside, among them a combust Moon, a Moon applying by square or opposition to a planet from Mercury to Saturn, and Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet within three degrees of the star. In Scorpio three bite hard. From about October 28 to November 16 a conjoining Moon is combust. Venus is in detriment there, so Venus within three degrees of the star sets its windows aside. And Mars, though Scorpio is his own sign, bars every window while he stands within three degrees of the star: that rule tests his place, not his dignity.

A passing moment scores out of ten: 6 for a Moon conjunction or 3 for a sextile or trine, 2 for the angle, and up to 2 for a waxing Moon not void of course; 70 percent is Excellent, 50 Good. The star's Malefic nature does not count, and this search has no malefic-star veto. A waxing Moon at 14° Scorpio, not void of course, conjoining it as its degree culminates scores 100; a waning, void Moon trining it from Pisces scores 50, still listed.

Scorpio rises slowly in northern latitudes, so an Ascendant window lasts about ten minutes at 40°N, against about eight at the Midheaven. In Canopy's purpose searches, such as a wedding, a Malefic star's degree on the Ascendant or Midheaven sets the moment aside (see electional astrology). The shared rules are under fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy.

Finding a Zuben Elgenubi window in Canopy

Open the Talismans tab and choose Fixed Star Talismans, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab. The picker lists all 35 stars with their Arabic names, the fifteen Behenian preselected: tap None, choose Zuben Elgenubi, set the place and a range of up to about six months, and tap Search Stars. Talisman scanning requires an active subscription.

With this star alone, setting the lunar mansion filter to al-Qalb, the Heart, 8°34′ to 21°26′ Scorpio, keeps only the conjunctions; the claws' own mansion, al-Zubānā, now lies in Libra. Each window opens as Zuben Elgenubi Talisman or Zuben Elgenubi Election, with al-Zubānā al-Janūbī beneath, its score and "Why this time?". Canopy keeps the best few windows per star, so expect a short list.
