The best day for surgery: the electional tradition of timing treatment

al-ʿIlāj wa al-Shifāʾ — treatment and healing

The best day for surgery is a window, not a date

The best day for surgery, by astrology, is found as electional astrology finds any beginning: by searching the days you can use for the moment whose sky best suits the matter. The Arabic authors called the art al-ikhtiyārāt, “the choices”, and treatment was among the beginnings they timed. Canopy keeps it as one purpose, Medical Procedures & Healing, al-ʿIlāj wa al-Shifāʾ: “Traditional timing for beginning medical treatment, scheduling elective surgery, or starting therapy.” That is electional astrology for surgery in its plainest form.

No auspicious day for surgery holds for everyone, because the sky that matters turns by the hour: the rising sign changes about every two hours and the Moon changes sign every two to three days. The question is which moment, inside the dates the clinic offers, has the fewest faults. Canopy’s own guide is plain about the limits: the timing “does not judge a medical condition, choose a treatment or estimate recovery.”

Astrological guidance only — not medical advice. That line is the app’s own, shown under the purpose when you choose it, and its guide adds: “Let medical advice and the clinic’s schedule decide when care happens. A timing score is never a reason to delay care.” Never move or postpone care against your doctor’s advice; urgent care never waits for a window.

What a medical election weighs: the Moon and the patient

Most of Canopy’s purposes take two or three significators, the planets that stand for the matter. A medical election takes one, the Moon, scored by sign: strong in her domicile, Cancer, or her exaltation, Taurus; weak in her detriment, Capricorn, or her fall, Scorpio. A waxing Moon counts in a window’s favor, and a Moon both waning and slow counts against it, as delay.

With no second planet to aim at, the search measures the Moon’s approach to the lord of the hour: a Moon applying to the hour’s planet counts for a window, more the closer she is. Since the Moon, the only significator, is never retrograde, no retrograde planet rules a medical window out.

Four houses carry the matter, each shown with its lord in House Ruler Analysis: the first, “Self, body, and overall vitality”; the sixth, “Illness, service, and daily work”; then the fourth and the tenth. The seventh is not among them, so a medical window is no contest between two parties. The comparison that matters runs between the first and the sixth: when the lord of the Ascendant, the patient, is not stronger than the lord of the sixth, the illness, the window is held back from the top of the scale.

When not to have surgery, by astrology

Two refusals belong to the medical purpose. A window that carries either is set aside, missing from the list rather than shown with a warning:

  • the Moon within 8° of a conjunction, square or opposition with Mars or Saturn, whether approaching or leaving. The rule, the Moon afflicted by a malefic, is drawn from Sahl ibn Bishr, and no other purpose in Canopy carries it;
  • Mars anywhere in the first whole-sign house, the patient’s house, even when he is weak by sign. Saturn there is refused only within 3° of the rising degree, as for every purpose.

The first rule reaches further than it looks. Each month the Moon makes eight hard aspects to the two malefics, a conjunction, two squares and an opposition to each, and each keeps the search closed for a little over a day: up to about a third of the month.

Physicians looked to the Moon’s sign before they cut, matching each sign to a part of the body: the zodiac of the body, set out under medical elections. Canopy’s search does not apply it.

Faults that close any window

For every purpose, these also set a window aside: the Moon combust, within 8.5° of the Sun, unless cazimi; void of course; in the via combusta, from 19° Libra to 15° Scorpio; or within 8° of the South Node; Mars or Saturn within 3° of the Ascendant; a combust lord of the Ascendant; and Algol, or another star Canopy counts as malefic, within a degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven. The electional guide explains how Canopy reads an election.

Hours for surgery: Jupiter and Venus first, Mars last

Among the windows that pass, the planetary hour counts. The medical rules favor the hours of Jupiter, the Sun, Venus and the Moon, and name one against the matter: “Hour of Mars (al-Mirrīkh) is hostile to this election”. Every election also weighs the hour by its planet, and the two add up: the hours of Jupiter and Venus count most, then the Sun’s, then the Moon’s; Mercury’s adds a little; Saturn’s counts against a window, and Mars’s counts against it twice.

So no weekday is best. A day takes its name from the planet of its first hour, Tuesday from Mars, but every day holds hours of all seven planets, and Canopy scores the hour: on a Tuesday the hour of Jupiter begins around midday and counts in full. The planetary hour now tool shows whose hour it is in your city.

Lunar mansions for an auspicious day for surgery

The Moon’s lunar mansion, the station she holds for about a day, counts as well. The medical rules favor seven of the twenty-eight and count six heavily against a window. These are scores, not refusals: a strong sky can carry a forbidden mansion, at a cost.

22Saʿd al-Dhābiḥ0°00′–12°51′ CapricornFavored
27al-Fargh al-Thānī4°17′–17°09′ PiscesFavored

The lists are this purpose’s own. Three of the favored mansions, al-Jabha, Saʿd al-Dhābiḥ and al-Fargh al-Thānī, already name healing in Canopy’s general readings, yet al-Simāk, whose reading includes healing the infirm, counts against a medical window, as do al-Thurayyā, al-Nathra and al-Shawla, all four Saʿd in the general table.

The table also cuts across the Moon’s dignity. Through most of Cancer, her own sign, she crosses al-Nathra and al-Ṭarf, both counted against surgery, while Capricorn, her detriment, opens with Saʿd al-Dhābiḥ, favored. Sign and mansion are added together, so neither decides a window alone.

Dental work, cosmetic surgery and starting treatment

Surgery astrology in Canopy is one purpose for any procedure you can schedule: an operation, dental work, a cosmetic procedure, or the first session of a course of treatment or therapy. It has no separate rule for teeth, skin or any part of the body. For a course of treatment, elect its first session. Whatever the procedure, the dates come from your doctor or dentist, and the search works inside them.

How to find the best day for surgery in Canopy

In the app, open Elections, choose Events, and under “What are you electing for?” pick Medical Procedures & Healing, listed under Health. Set From and To around the dates the clinic can offer, up to 183 days, about six months. Set the Location card to where the procedure will happen, since the hours and the rising sign are worked out for that place, then tap Find Best Moments.

The results screen, titled Medical Procedures & Healing, lists the windows that reach 50% or more, sorted by Soonest or Best Quality. Each card gives the time, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the lord of the hour, up to three of the factors in its favor and the percentage; open one for House Ruler Analysis, Why this time?, Save to Calendar and Set Reminder. If the screen reads “No window favors your chart in this stretch”, widen the range, or keep the date your clinic has set.

Your chart and the procedure

Windows are ranked by the election chart alone. With your birth data entered in the app, your nativity adds a bounded adjustment, never more than ten points either way, shown under Relationship to Your Natal.

The medical family has a natal factor of its own: an election rising in the sign of your natal Ascendant counts for a window as the “body channel”, unless your natal Mars or Saturn stands in that sign. Against a window count an election rising in your natal sixth, eighth or twelfth sign, the sixth read in the nativity as a place of illness, and a rising degree or Moon within the rays of your natal Mars or Saturn.

Questions

What is the best day for surgery according to astrology?

A window inside the dates you can use, not one date for everyone. Canopy’s search favors a well-placed Moon applying to the lord of the hour, an hour of Jupiter or Venus, a first-house lord stronger than the sixth’s and a favored mansion, and it sets aside windows with the Moon in hard aspect to Mars or Saturn within 8° or with Mars in the first house.

When should you not have surgery, according to astrology?

By Canopy’s rules, not while the Moon is within 8° of a conjunction, square or opposition with Mars or Saturn, not with Mars in the first house, and not while the Moon is combust, void of course, on the burnt path through Libra and Scorpio or joined to the South Node; such windows are set aside. Urgent care never waits for a window, and never move or postpone care against your doctor’s advice: this is astrological guidance only, not medical advice.

What is the best day of the week to have surgery, astrologically?

None, because Canopy scores the planetary hour, not the day. For a medical window the hours of Jupiter and Venus count most, then the Sun’s and the Moon’s, while Saturn’s counts against it and Mars’s twice over. Even Tuesday, Mars’s day, holds hours of Jupiter and Venus; the planetary hour now tool shows whose hour it is where you are.

Is today a good day to have surgery, astrologically?

The medical search does not mark whole days good or bad; it finds windows inside them. Start a Medical Procedures & Healing search today and sort by Soonest. If no window falls today, keep a procedure already booked: the app’s line is “Astrological guidance only — not medical advice,” and its guide adds, “A timing score is never a reason to delay care.” For the hour and the Moon right now, see auspicious time today.

What is the best day for dental work, astrologically?

Dental work is timed like any other procedure: Canopy has no separate rule for teeth. Choose Medical Procedures & Healing, set the dates your dentist can offer, and Find Best Moments ranks the windows by the Moon, the hour, the first and sixth houses and the mansions. The dentist’s schedule comes first.

Should you avoid surgery when Mercury is retrograde?

Not by Canopy’s rules. The Moon is the only significator of a medical election, so no retrograde planet rules a window out; a retrograde Mercury or Mars costs a little, more when it rules the hour or the rising sign. Mars matters more by where it stands: in the first house, or within 8° of a hard aspect to the Moon, it closes the window.
