# Wedding Date Astrology: Choosing the Day and Hour to Marry

al-nikāḥ — marriage

10 min read · From the classical sources · Updated October 24, 2026

## A wedding is an election made for a marriage

**Wedding date astrology** is electional astrology turned to one beginning: the day and the hour a marriage starts. The tradition held that a matter carries the character of the sky at its beginning, as a person carries the sky of their birth, so the astrologer searched the weeks ahead for a moment that suited a marriage and set the ceremony there. The Arabic authors called the art *al-ikhtiyārāt*, “the choices”, and marriage was among the oldest matters they chose for: the last book of Dorotheus of Sidon, the groundwork of their rules for the Moon, already counts marrying among the beginnings to be timed.

No lucky date suits every couple. The sky that matters turns by the hour: the rising sign changes about every two hours, the Moon changes sign every two to three days, and the faults the authors feared come and go within an afternoon. The real question is which window, inside the dates you can manage and for the place you will marry, has the fewest faults and the most help. That is a search, and it has to be run for you.

An election improves the conditions of a beginning; it does not promise how a marriage turns out. Sahl ibn Bishr, who gathered the inherited rules into a book of elections in the ninth century, cautioned that an election cannot help where the nativity denies the matter.

## What the classical authors weighed for a marriage

A marriage was read through four things. First the seventh house, the house of the partner and of unions; in whole-sign houses, which Canopy uses, it is the sign opposite the Ascendant of the chosen moment. Then Venus, the natural significator of marriage, whose condition at that moment, direct or retrograde, clear of the Sun or burned by him, was read as the condition of the union’s affection. Then the Moon, the signifier of every beginning, wanted clear of the Sun’s rays, well placed by sign and house, and not void of course. Last the angles, above all the Ascendant and the seventh, from which the malefics were kept away.

Māshāʾallāh put it bluntly: a malefic in the first house destroys the election, and for a matter between two people the seventh is the matter’s own angle. Mars, the bringer of quarrels and separation, was the planet most feared there. Sahl added the rules on the Moon that Canopy still applies: her void course, the burnt path through Libra and Scorpio, and her fall into the eighth or twelfth house.

The Picatrix, the *Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm*, recommends the first hour of Friday, Venus’s hour on her own day, for love and marriage, and Canopy’s counsel for that hour is drawn from it and from al-Bīrūnī’s *Tafhīm*. The [love elections](https://canopyastro.com/electional-astrology.html#love-astrology-timing-dates-proposals-and-weddings) on the electional astrology guide follow the same reasoning.

## The faults that rule a window out

Canopy’s Wedding Day & Marriage search treats some faults as absolute. A window that carries any of them is set aside, however good its hour:

- the Moon combust, within 8.5° of the Sun. Within 17 minutes of arc she is *cazimi*, in the heart of the Sun, and is strengthened rather than refused; between 8.5° and 12°, merely under the beams, the window is allowed in with a caution;
- the Moon void of course, which Sahl read as a beginning that comes to nothing;
- the Moon in the *via combusta*, the burnt path from 19° Libra to 15° Scorpio;
- the Moon joined to the South Node, within 8°;
- Mars or Saturn rising, within 3° of the Ascendant;
- the lord of the Ascendant combust, with cazimi again exempt;
- the Moon in the eighth or twelfth whole-sign house;
- Mars anywhere in the first or seventh house, the sources’ own veto for a marriage: quarrels and separation;
- Venus retrograde, since a retrograde significator was read as prevention and delay;
- the Moon in any sign but Taurus, Leo or Aquarius.

The last rule is the wedding’s own. Of the fixed signs, Taurus, Leo and Aquarius pass, and Taurus and Leo count in the window’s favor; Scorpio, though fixed, is refused, as are the moveable and mutable signs. Among the [fixed stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html), Algol rising, culminating or setting rules a marriage window out, while Spica on an angle counts for it.

Other faults are weighed, not refused. The Sun in the seventh counts against a window, read as separation. Saturn in the seventh, unlike Mars, is not one of the wedding search’s refusals. When the lord of the Ascendant, who stands for you, is weaker than the lord of the seventh, who stands for your partner, the window is ranked lower and held back from the top scores; when it is stronger, the window gains. The rule is drawn from Sahl and Māshāʾallāh, for whom the weaker lord re-ranks a union rather than condemns it.

## Hours and mansions for a wedding

Among the windows that pass, the planetary hour counts. The hours of Venus, the Moon, Jupiter and Mercury count in a wedding window’s favor, the hours of Saturn and Mars against it, and an hour lord that is retrograde or combust takes something back. Venus returns every seventh hour, so her hour is rarely far off; the guide to [the hour of Venus](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-hours.html#the-hour-of-venus-and-the-timing-of-love) sets out the sequence. The search scores the hour, not the weekday, so a Venus hour on a Tuesday counts in full.

The Moon’s [lunar mansion](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html) counts too. Eight of the twenty-eight count in a wedding’s favor and seven heavily against it. These are scores, not refusals: a window in a low mansion can still pass if the rest of the sky is strong, though it falls well down the list.

*The lunar mansions in Canopy’s Wedding Day & Marriage search*

| No. | Mansion | Meaning | For a wedding |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | [*al-Buṭayn*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-butayn) | The Little Belly | Counts in its favor |
| 3 | [*al-Thurayyā*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-thurayya) | The Pleiades | Counts in its favor |
| 6 | [*al-Hanʿa*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-hana) | The Mark | Counts in its favor |
| 7 | [*al-Dhirāʿ*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-dhira) | The Forearm | Counts in its favor |
| 10 | [*al-Jabha*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-jabha) | The Forehead | Counts in its favor |
| 14 | [*al-Simāk*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-simak) | The Unarmed | Counts in its favor |
| 24 | [*Saʿd al-Suʿūd*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#sad-al-suud) | The Luckiest of the Lucky | Counts in its favor |
| 26 | [*al-Fargh al-Awwal*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-fargh-al-awwal) | The First Spout | Counts in its favor |
| 4 | [*al-Dabarān*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-dabaran) | The Follower | Counts heavily against it |
| 5 | [*al-Haqʿa*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-haqa) | The White Spot | Counts heavily against it |
| 9 | [*al-Ṭarf*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-tarf) | The Glance | Counts heavily against it |
| 15 | [*al-Ghafr*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-ghafr) | The Covering | Counts heavily against it |
| 19 | [*al-Shawla*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-shawla) | The Sting | Counts heavily against it |
| 22 | [*Saʿd al-Dhābiḥ*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#sad-al-dhabih) | The Lucky One of the Slaughterers | Counts heavily against it |
| 25 | [*Saʿd al-Akhbiya*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#sad-al-akhbiya) | The Lucky One of the Hidden Things | Counts heavily against it |

Because the wedding Moon must stand in Taurus, Leo or Aquarius, only some of these can be reached: of the favored mansions, al-Thurayyā in early Taurus, al-Jabha in early Leo, Saʿd al-Suʿūd in early Aquarius and al-Fargh al-Awwal in late Aquarius; of the low ones, al-Dabarān and al-Haqʿa in Taurus and Saʿd al-Akhbiya in Aquarius. Every mansion’s reading is on [what each mansion favors](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#what-each-mansion-favors).

## Proposal first, wedding second

Canopy keeps the engagement apart from the wedding. Proposals & Engagements, *al-Khiṭbah*, takes Mercury and Venus as its significators, favors the hours of Mercury, Venus, the Moon and Jupiter, and looks to the first, seventh, third and eleventh houses. Wedding Day & Marriage, *al-Nikāḥ*, takes Venus and the Moon, and looks to the first, seventh, fourth and tenth.

The sharpest difference is the Moon’s sign. A wedding wants her in Taurus, Leo or Aquarius. A proposal refuses a fixed Moon and counts one in a moveable sign, Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, in its favor; the mutable signs are neutral. An engagement sets something moving, and a wedding is meant to hold.

The proposal search favors three mansions, al-Buṭayn, al-Dhirāʿ and al-Simāk, counts the same seven against it, and shares the wedding’s other refusals. A third love purpose, Planning Romantic Dates, times an evening out by the hours of Venus and the Moon.

## How to find the wedding date in Canopy

In the app, open Elections, choose Events, and under “What are you electing for?” pick Wedding Day & Marriage. Set the dates with From and To: the range opens on the next three months and can run to 183 days, about six months. Check the Location card, since the hours and the rising sign are worked out for the place, then tap Find Best Moments.

The Election Results screen lists the windows for one, three or six months, sorted by Soonest or Best Quality. Each card gives the date and time, a quality percentage, the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the ruler of the hour, the factors that raised or lowered it, and a line on how it falls in your chart. Open a window for its full reading, and use Set Reminder to be told before it opens.

If the venue has already fixed the date, Evaluate a Specific Time gives that moment’s quality score and breakdown: a general reading of the sky, not the wedding rules. To see how the wedding rules treat the day, run Find Best Moments across the days around it. The electional astrology guide explains [how Canopy reads an election](https://canopyastro.com/electional-astrology.html#how-canopy-reads-an-election) for every purpose.

## Your chart and the wedding

The windows are ranked by the election chart alone. Once your birth data is entered, your natal chart is added as a small, bounded adjustment, capped at ten points either way. For a marriage, two natal factors count in a window’s favor: Venus at the chosen moment aspecting the lord of your natal seventh house, and an election Ascendant rising in your natal seventh-house sign, unless your natal Mars or Saturn stands there. Your Chart at Election Time draws the two together, your natal planets inside and the election moment’s outside, for the window’s peak minute.

The Lot of Marriage belongs to the nativity. Canopy calculates it from your birth data in your natal Key Lots, by day from the Ascendant, adding Venus and taking away Saturn, and reversed by night; the guide to [the Lots of Eros and Marriage](https://canopyastro.com/arabic-lots.html#love-in-the-lots-eros-and-marriage) reads it in full. It does not steer the wedding search. Canopy does not compare two people’s charts: it reads one nativity, yours, and times the beginning.

## Retrograde and the season

The modern rule of thumb is never to marry while Mercury is retrograde. Sahl and the Picatrix put the weight on a retrograde significator, and for a marriage that is Venus. In a Wedding Day & Marriage search a retrograde Venus rules the window out, and a combust Venus counts against it unless she is cazimi. A retrograde Mercury costs a little, as every retrograde planet does, and more when it rules the hour or the Ascendant, but it does not rule a wedding window out.

A proposal is different, because Mercury is one of its significators: while Mercury is retrograde, the proposal search finds no window at all, though the wedding search still does.

No season is written into the rules, and Canopy keeps no month calendar for weddings: the month that suits shows itself in where the strongest windows fall, and that changes with the year and the place. Six months is long enough to see the Moon pass through Taurus, Leo and Aquarius about six times each, and to see whether Venus, retrograde for about six weeks roughly every year and a half, turns back inside your range.

## Questions

**Is there a best month to get married astrology can point to?**

Not one month for everyone: it is found by searching the months ahead for a sky that suits marriage, with the Moon well placed, Venus strong, and Mars kept away from the Ascendant and the seventh house. In Canopy, choose Wedding Day & Marriage, set a range of up to 183 days, about six months, and Find Best Moments scores the windows, favoring the hours of Venus, the Moon, Jupiter and Mercury and setting a window aside when the Moon falls in the eighth or twelfth house. The best month shows itself in where the strongest windows fall.

**Should you avoid getting married when Mercury is retrograde?**

Not by the rules Canopy follows. Mercury is not the significator of marriage, so in a Wedding Day & Marriage search a retrograde Mercury costs a window a little, and a little more when it rules the hour or the Ascendant, but it does not rule the window out. Venus retrograde does rule a wedding window out, and for a proposal, where Mercury and Venus are both significators, either one retrograde does.

**What is the best day of the week to get married, astrologically?**

Friday is Venus’s day, and the Picatrix recommends its first hour, Venus’s own, for love and marriage. Canopy’s wedding search scores the planetary hour rather than the weekday: the hours of Venus, the Moon, Jupiter and Mercury count in a window’s favor on any day of the week, and the hours of Saturn and Mars count against it.

**Which sign should the Moon be in for a wedding?**

In Canopy’s Wedding Day & Marriage search the Moon must stand in Taurus, Leo or Aquarius, and Taurus and Leo count in the window’s favor; in any other sign, Scorpio included, the window is set aside. A proposal is the reverse: a Moon in a fixed sign rules a proposal window out, and a Moon in Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn counts for it.

**Can Canopy check a wedding date the venue has already set?**

Evaluate a Specific Time gives that moment’s quality score and its breakdown, a general reading of the sky at that time rather than the wedding rules. To see how the wedding rules treat the day, run Find Best Moments for Wedding Day & Marriage across the days around it.

**Does Canopy compare our two charts for the wedding?**

No. Canopy does not compare two people’s charts. It reads your own nativity, with the Lot of Marriage, Venus and the lord of your seventh house, and once your birth data is entered, Your Chart at Election Time sets each wedding window against your chart.
