# Vindemiatrix, al-ʿAwwāʾ: the fixed star in astrology, its talisman and its election

al-ʿAwwāʾ — the Barker, Vindemiatrix, Epsilon Virginis

## Vindemiatrix star meaning: the grape-harvestress and al-ʿAwwāʾ

**Vindemiatrix** astrology begins with the vintage. The Latin name, from the Greek, means "the grape-harvestress". In Canopy the Vindemiatrix fixed star carries the Arabic name *al-ʿAwwāʾ*, printed beside it on the Chart tab, the Today card and the star picker. Strictly, *al-ʿAwwāʾ*, "the Barker" (the Howler, in Canopy's guide to the mansions), names a group of five stars in Virgo, Beta, Eta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon Virginis; Vindemiatrix is Epsilon.

The group named the thirteenth lunar mansion, [*al-ʿAwwāʾ*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-awwa), which Canopy's tropical spans set at 4°17′ to 17°09′ Virgo. The star's own degree falls in the fifteenth, [*al-Ghafr*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-ghafr), the Covering (0°00′ to 12°51′ Libra), a Mixed mansion.

## Where the Vindemiatrix fixed star sits

By tropical longitude Vindemiatrix stood at 10°17′ Libra in 2025; Canopy's star page carries it forward for precession, so it reads a minute or two later now. The star itself lies in the constellation Virgo, about sixteen degrees north of the ecliptic, and rises everywhere except south of about 79°S. Canopy shows it at magnitude 2.83.

## Vindemiatrix in astrology: Canopy's one Saturnine star

Canopy files Vindemiatrix as Saturnine, of the natures of Saturn and Mercury: the only one of its 35 stars with that label, or with that pair of planets. When a planet aspects the star within two degrees, the Today screen's fixed-star card lists it with its nature, Saturnine; on days Vindemiatrix leads that card, it adds what to seek, acceptance of endings and wisdom through loss, and what to avoid: partnerships and marriage elections.

Canopy's purpose elections act on the star's Saturnine label. In any purpose search, from a launch to a [wedding](https://canopyastro.com/wedding-date-astrology.html), a moment with Vindemiatrix's degree within a degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven is set aside; on the Descendant too, when the purpose's houses include the seventh, as the wedding and proposal searches' do, or when the Moon or a significator lies within two degrees of the star.

## Vindemiatrix conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

From your birth date, time and place, Canopy casts your chart and looks for Vindemiatrix by conjunction only. When the star's degree, moved back for precession to your birth date, lies within three degrees of one of the seven classical planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or either lunar Node, the Chart tab lists the contact under Other Conjunctions with its orb, and the star page gives the reading, drawn from the classical sources: the star "brings Saturnine delay, widowhood, and losses in relationships. When conjunct a natal planet, you may experience separations or delayed fulfillment in partnerships. Patience and acceptance of fate are required." Its Traditional Uses line reads: "Talismans for accepting necessary endings and finding wisdom in loss."

One reading serves every point, whether Vindemiatrix is conjunct the Sun, the Moon or Saturn, or sits on the Ascendant or the Midheaven; Canopy does not vary it by planet. The Sun crosses the star's degree around October 3, so a natal Sun within orb belongs roughly to births from September 30 to October 6. The words are the old star lore's, not a forecast for any one life.

## How to make a Vindemiatrix talisman: jet, comfrey and Saturn

Vindemiatrix is not one of the fifteen [Behenian stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html#the-fifteen-behenian-stars), and the classical Behenian lists give it no stone or herb. Canopy pairs it with jet and comfrey all the same: the Correspondences card on the star's own page names jet as its gemstone and comfrey as its herb. The window page does not repeat them; its About Vindemiatrix row leads back to the star page.

That is Canopy's whole prescription: a stone, an herb, the star's Saturnine nature and the minutes of the window, with no method of making. A talisman timed to Saturn himself, by his hour and his dignity, is a separate election: see the [Saturn talisman](https://canopyastro.com/saturn-talisman.html).

## When to make a Vindemiatrix talisman: the Vindemiatrix election

Canopy runs the Vindemiatrix talisman and the Vindemiatrix election as a single search. A moment qualifies only while the star's zodiac degree, about 10° Libra, is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven; Canopy tests the degree, not the star itself, which stands sixteen degrees off the ecliptic.

The Moon must apply to the star by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees: from about 8° to 10° of Libra for the conjunction, of Leo or Sagittarius for a sextile, of Gemini or Aquarius for a trine. None of those signs is Scorpio or Capricorn, her fall and her detriment, so no aspect is closed by sign. The moment is set aside if the Moon is combust, applies by square or opposition to one of the five planets, applies to conjoin an afflicted planet or an undignified Mars or Saturn, or applies to the South Node, or if Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet lies within three degrees of the star. From about September 25 to October 10 every conjunction is combust; the sextiles and trines escape.

A passing moment earns 6 points for a conjunction or 3 for a sextile or trine, 2 for the angle, and one each for a waxing Moon and a Moon not void of course: Excellent from 70 percent, Good from 50. The star's Saturnine nature plays no part. A waxing Moon at 9° Libra, not void, conjoining the star as its degree culminates scores 100 percent. Put Saturn at 12° Libra, exalted there, and the moment is set aside, Saturn being within three degrees of the star. A waning, void Moon at 9° Aquarius, trining the star as its degree rises, scores 50 percent, still listed.

Windows last minutes, since an angle crosses a degree in a few, and Canopy keeps only the best-scoring few for each star. The shared rules are under [fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy](https://canopyastro.com/talismanic-timing.html#fixed-star-talisman-windows-in-canopy).

## Finding a Vindemiatrix window in Canopy

Open the Talismans tab and choose Fixed Star Talismans, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab, the same search headed Fixed Star Elections. The picker lists all 35 stars with their Arabic names, the fifteen Behenian preselected: tap None, choose Vindemiatrix, with *al-ʿAwwāʾ* beneath it, set the place and the dates, a week by default and up to about six months, and tap Search Stars.

The form also filters by the Moon's phase and motion, the angle and the lunar mansion. Results sort by Soonest or Top Rated, and with your chart saved each row adds a line on your natal Saturn. A window opens on a page headed Vindemiatrix Talisman, or Vindemiatrix Election, with its reasons under "Why this time?"

## Questions

**What does the Vindemiatrix star mean in astrology?**

Vindemiatrix, the grape-harvestress, is a fixed star near 10° of tropical Libra, named *al-ʿAwwāʾ* in Canopy. Canopy files it as Saturnine, of Saturn and Mercury, and its reading, drawn from the classical sources, speaks of delay, of separations and of accepting necessary endings.

**What does Vindemiatrix conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven mean?**

Canopy gives one reading, drawn from the classical sources, for the star within three degrees of a classical planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or a Node: Saturnine delay and losses in relationships, separations or delayed fulfillment in partnerships, and a call for patience and acceptance of fate. It is star lore, not a forecast.

**How do you make a Vindemiatrix talisman?**

Canopy pairs Vindemiatrix with jet and comfrey on the star's own page, and times the work to the minutes when its degree holds the Ascendant or the Midheaven while the Moon applies to it. It gives no method of making.

**When is the best time to make a Vindemiatrix talisman?**

When its degree, about 10° Libra, is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven and an unafflicted Moon applies to it by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees, with no Mars, Saturn or South Node within three degrees of it. A waxing Moon conjoining it, not void of course, scores highest.

**Is Vindemiatrix a Behenian star?**

No. Vindemiatrix is not one of the fifteen Behenian stars, the talismanic tradition's stars with a stone and an herb of their own. Its jet and comfrey are Canopy's pairing, shown on its star page.

**What does Pluto conjunct Vindemiatrix mean?**

Canopy does not read it. It tests the star only against the seven classical planets, from the Sun to Saturn, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and the lunar Nodes, and its Today fixed-star scans use the same seven planets.
