Tilsam al-Zuhrah — the talisman of Venus

## The talisman of Venus and its meaning

**A Venus talisman**, the talisman of Venus, was in the Arabic tradition an image made in an hour of Venus, while Venus herself stood strong, for the matters she governs: love, friendship, beauty and the mending of quarrels. The art's handbook, the *Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm* or *Picatrix*, set down the planetary correspondences and the timing of such work, and Canopy's Venus correspondences are drawn from that tradition.

Venus is the Lesser Fortune, the smaller benefic beside Jupiter, a title the Virtue row on a Venus window keeps. The Venus talisman's meaning follows: its purpose line reads "Love, beauty, harmony, and the binding of friendships", and its note calls it a talisman "for love, reconciliation, and the binding of friendships."

This is not a Venus amulet sold as jewelry: the talisman was defined by the moment of its making, and that moment is what Canopy computes. For a love matter itself, a [first date](https://canopyastro.com/first-date-astrology.html), a [proposal](https://canopyastro.com/proposal-astrology.html) or a [wedding](https://canopyastro.com/wedding-date-astrology.html), Canopy's Elections weigh that matter's own rules. This page reads the subject as history and as timing; it gives no instructions and makes no claim that a talisman works.

## How to make a Venus talisman: copper, emerald and rose

Canopy answers how to make a Venus talisman with her matter and her moment. The matter is on the Correspondences screen, *al-Munāsabāt*, which opens from the About & Correspondences page of every Venus window:

- **Metal** (*al-Maʿdan*): copper, *al-Nuḥās*.
- **Gemstone** (*al-Jawhar*): emerald.
- **Color** (*al-Lawn*): green and rose.
- **Fumigation** (*al-Bakhūr*) and **Herb** (*al-Ḥashīsha*): rose (*ward*) or myrtle (*rayhan*), the same in both rows.

The window page's own Talisman Correspondences block agrees, but gives the incense as sandalwood and rose. Beyond the materials and the minutes, Canopy gives no construction steps, recipe or ritual text; for Venus, the minutes take the most finding.

## The planetary hour of Venus

The hours run in the Chaldean order, slowest planet to swiftest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon. The planet of the day takes the first hour after sunrise, so Venus, ruler of Friday, opens Friday, and each hour is a twelfth of the daylight or of the night. Counted from sunrise, each night going with the day before it, the planetary hour of Venus falls:

- **Friday:** the 1st and 8th hours of the day; the 3rd and 10th of the night.
- **Saturday:** the 5th and 12th of the day; the 7th of the night.
- **Sunday:** the 2nd and 9th of the day; the 4th and 11th of the night.
- **Monday:** the 6th of the day; the 1st and 8th of the night.
- **Tuesday:** the 3rd and 10th of the day; the 5th and 12th of the night.
- **Wednesday:** the 7th of the day; the 2nd and 9th of the night.
- **Thursday:** the 4th and 11th of the day; the 6th of the night.

In Canopy the hour is required and the day a bonus: the Hour Ruler box on every Venus window names her, and "Why this time?" lists "Venus rules the hour". A window inside Friday's planetary day, from sunrise to sunrise, adds two points as "Venus rules the planetary day".

Before dawn the planetary day and the calendar can disagree: Friday's tenth night hour falls on Saturday by the clock, so the Day Ruler box, which follows the calendar, names Saturn while the score still gives Venus the day. ## When to make a Venus talisman: morning star and evening star

When to make a Venus talisman depends first on where Venus can stand. Canopy wants her within three degrees of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, and Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so her angular moments follow the Sun's daily round:

- **On the Ascendant, around dawn.** As a morning star she rises before the Sun, in the last hours of the night; as an evening star, after it, in the morning.
- **On the Midheaven, around midday.** She culminates within a few hours of local noon.
- **Never in the evening.** The evening star of dusk stands low in the west, near the Descendant, an angle Canopy does not count.

Her nearness to the Sun also empties whole stretches of the calendar. Canopy sets Venus aside when she is combust, within eleven degrees of the Sun, and when she is retrograde. She is combust for about three months around her passage behind the Sun, and retrograde for about six weeks around her passage in front of it, a turn that comes roughly every nineteen months. The same rule makes Friday's first hour a narrow chance: it opens with the Sun on the Ascendant, and Venus must rise within it yet stand more than eleven degrees from the Sun.

The signs set the other limit; the guide to [triplicities, terms and faces](https://canopyastro.com/essential-dignities.html#triplicity-egyptian-bounds-and-chaldean-faces) explains the lesser dignities. Sign by sign, the search reckons her like this:

- **Taurus and Libra**, her domiciles: a Venus in Taurus talisman and a Venus in Libra talisman pass anywhere in the sign, at five points for dignity.
- **Pisces**, her exaltation: a Venus in Pisces talisman passes in the whole sign, at four.
- **Cancer and Capricorn**: by day through her triplicity; before dawn only where she holds a term or a face, from 0° to 13° of Cancer and from 14° to 22° of Capricorn.
- **Aquarius**: from 0° to 13° only, by face and term.
- **Gemini, Leo and Sagittarius**: only in her terms, 12° to 17° of Gemini, 6° to 11° of Leo and 12° to 17° of Sagittarius.
- **Aries and Scorpio**, her detriments, and **Virgo**, her fall: refused outright.

## The Venus talisman election: the tests and the score

A talisman window is an election held to stricter rules: a moment that fails any test is set aside, not marked down; as the in-app guide puts it, "a high score never makes up for a failed check." The shared tests are set out under [why a window is refused](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-talismans.html#why-a-window-is-refused); on Venus they fall like this:

- **Her hour, an angle, a dignity:** an hour of Venus, within three degrees of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, with domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term or face, and never in Aries, Scorpio or Virgo.
- **Direct and clear of the Sun:** not retrograde, and more than eleven degrees from the Sun.
- **The Moon applying** to Venus by conjunction, sextile or trine. Unlike the Sun, Venus can take the conjunction, when she stands far enough from the Sun that the Moon is not combust.
- **Neither afflicted:** the Moon not combust or near the South Node, and neither the Moon nor Venus applying by square or opposition to Mars or Saturn.

A moment that passes is scored out of 18 and listed at 50 percent or more, with dignity weighing most. Only Jupiter can add the point for a benefic in aspect, since a planet cannot help itself, so a Venus window tops out at 17 of 18, about 94 percent.

### Two imagined Venus windows

In the first sky, Venus is in Libra, her own sign, within a degree of the Midheaven in her hour on a Friday, and a waxing Moon applies to her by trine. On points alone it would rank near the top. But Venus is retrograde, and Canopy sets the moment aside before it is ever scored.

In the second it is a Friday afternoon, in the eighth hour of the day, which is hers. Venus is in Libra, direct, an evening star well clear of the Sun, within three degrees of the Midheaven. The Moon, waxing and not void of course, applies to her by sextile, clear of the Sun and the South Node, and neither the Moon nor Venus applies to Mars or Saturn by square or opposition. It passes: domicile 5, Midheaven 2, hour 3, Friday 2, waxing Moon 1 and the Moon's condition 2 make 15 of 18, about 83 percent, which Canopy rates Excellent.

## Finding a Venus window in Canopy

In the app, open Talismans, then Planetary Talismans. All seven bodies start selected; choose Venus alone. Check the location, because the angles depend on where you stand, and set the dates: seven days from today to begin with, up to six months in one search. Venus can go weeks without a window, so a long span helps. Then tap Search Planets.

The filters narrow the results without changing what the search admits: ASC shows only her rising windows, MC only her midday ones, and Mansion keeps the windows with the Moon in the [lunar mansions](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#what-each-mansion-favors) you choose.

Each result opens on a page headed Venus Talisman, *Tilsam al-Zuhrah*: the exact time, window and score, the TIMING boxes, Celestial Configuration, "Why this time?" with factors such as "Venus in Libra (domicile)", and About & Correspondences. A window lasts only about ten minutes either side of its exact time ([why so short](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-talismans.html#why-a-window-lasts-only-minutes)), so Set Reminder alerts you thirty minutes ahead and Save to Calendar adds it to your calendar. Birth data is optional; with it, each window notes how it meets your nativity. Canopy is available on iPhone and Android, in English, Arabic and Turkish.

## Questions

**What does a Venus talisman mean?**

An image made, in the Arabic tradition, in an hour of Venus with Venus strong, for the matters she governs. Canopy's purpose line reads "Love, beauty, harmony, and the binding of friendships", and its note adds reconciliation. Venus is the Lesser Fortune, the smaller of the two benefics.

**How do you make a Venus talisman?**

Canopy gives the matter and the moment: copper, emerald, green and rose, with rose or myrtle as the fumigation, and a window in her hour with Venus dignified, direct, clear of the Sun and within three degrees of an angle. It gives no construction steps.

**When is the best time to make a Venus talisman?**

In her own planetary hour, with Venus direct and clear of the Sun in Taurus, Libra or Pisces, within three degrees of the Ascendant or Midheaven, and the Moon applying to her unafflicted. Since Venus stays near the Sun, such moments fall before dawn, in the morning or near midday.

**What is the planetary hour of Venus?**

An hour ruled by Venus in the Chaldean sequence of planetary hours. She takes Friday's first hour after sunrise and every seventh hour after it, three or four in every twenty-four hours: on Friday, the 1st and 8th of the day and the 3rd and 10th of the night.

**Do you have to make a Venus talisman on a Friday?**

No. Canopy requires her hour, not her day; a window inside Friday's planetary day, from sunrise to sunrise, earns two extra points.

**Why does Canopy show no Venus talisman window?**

Usually because Venus is retrograde or within eleven degrees of the Sun, either of which can last for weeks or months, or is in Aries, Scorpio or Virgo, or peregrine. Otherwise her hour, her angle and the Moon did not meet in the span; try a longer date range.

**Does Canopy's Venus talisman follow the Picatrix?**

Its Venus correspondences are drawn from the classical correspondences, the tradition recorded in the Picatrix, or Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm. Canopy computes the timing. It shows none of the handbook's images or ritual texts, and no construction steps.

## Venus, in her own hour.

Canopy finds the minutes when Venus stands dignified on the Ascendant or the Midheaven in her own hour, and sets a moment aside when she is retrograde, combust or debilitated, or the Moon is afflicted.
