# Vega, al-Nasr al-Wāqiʿ: the fixed star in astrology, its talisman and its election

al-Nasr al-Wāqiʿ — the falling eagle, Alpha Lyrae

## Vega star meaning: the falling eagle

**Vega**, Alpha Lyrae, the brightest star of the Lyre, is one of the fifteen [Behenian fixed stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html#the-fifteen-behenian-stars) of the talisman-makers, and the Vega star meaning starts with its Arabic name. In Vega astrology as Canopy reads it, the Vega fixed star is a benefic of the natures of Venus and Mercury, with chrysolite as its gemstone and savory as its herb.

Vega, earlier written Wega, is a loose transliteration of the Arabic *wāqiʿ*, falling or landing, from *al-nasr al-wāqiʿ*, the falling (or swooping) eagle, which Latin rendered *Vultur Cadens*. Canopy shows the name as *al-Nasr al-Wāqiʿ*, the Falling Eagle. Its partner in the Arabic naming is [Altair](https://canopyastro.com/altair.html), *al-Nasr al-Ṭāʾir*, the flying eagle. The lyre is a Greek picture: the harp of Orpheus, with Vega at its handle.

In Hindu astronomy and astrology Vega is the star of Abhijit, the extra nakshatra that some of the oldest Indian lists add to the usual twenty-seven. Canopy reads the Arabian mansions instead; the [nakshatra page](https://canopyastro.com/nakshatra.html#twenty-eight-mansions-and-twenty-seven-nakshatras) compares the two.

## Where the Vega fixed star sits: 15° of Capricorn

By tropical longitude Vega stands at 15°38′ of Capricorn (2025 position), moving forward about a degree every seventy-two years. Canopy's star page, which prints the degree for the day you open it, read 15°39′ Capricorn on October 25, 2026; a birth chart uses the star's place in the birth year, near 14°56′ Capricorn for 1975 and 15°17′ for 2000. The page gives its brightness as magnitude 0.03. Vega is the fifth-brightest star in the night sky, a blue-tinged white star about 25 light-years away. With Altair and [Deneb](https://canopyastro.com/deneb.html) it forms the Summer Triangle.

Of the fifteen Behenian stars, Vega lies farthest from the zodiac, about 62 degrees north of the ecliptic. In the app, Vega is rising when its zodiac degree is on the Ascendant and culminating when that degree is on the Midheaven; the app does not check where the star itself stands. At 40° north, when 15° Capricorn rises, Vega is already some 43 degrees up in the east-northeast; at 35° south it is still below the horizon. The Midheaven keeps closer company: the degree culminates about half an hour after the star itself crosses the meridian.

Vega never rises south of about 51° south and never sets north of about 51° north, roughly the latitude of London. Where it never rises, its degree still reaches the angles and the search still lists windows.

## Vega in astrology: a benefic of Venus and Mercury

Canopy files Vega as a Benefic star of the natures of Venus and Mercury, in agreement with Ptolemy's *Tetrabiblos*, which likens the stars of Lyra to the same two planets. A Vega window introduces it as "a benefic fixed star of the nature of Venus and Mercury." Among the Behenian stars, [Spica](https://canopyastro.com/spica.html) and [Alphecca](https://canopyastro.com/alphecca.html) share the pair.

The star page's Talisman Correspondences card says what Vega is for. **Seek:** excellence, artistic mastery, virtue, binding and lasting works at its culmination. **Avoid:** compromise, mediocrity. The list names a moment: lasting works belong to the culmination, which in Canopy means Vega's degree on the Midheaven.

Its natal reading, drawn from the classical sources, says the Falling Eagle "brings beneficence, idealism," and artistic gifts. The star page's Planetary Nature card adds a caution: the risk of an idealism too pure to do the practical work its ideals require.

## Vega conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

Canopy reads a natal Vega by conjunction. It sets the star against each of the seven classical planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and both lunar Nodes, and counts a contact within three degrees: for a birth around 2000, a point between about 12° and 18° of Capricorn. The reading is the same for each: "When conjunct a natal planet, you have refined artistic talents and aspiration toward perfection. The star grants charisma and the ability to inspire others toward higher ideals." There is no separate text for Vega conjunct Venus or Vega conjunct Mars, and the Descendant and the IC are not checked.

The Sun reaches Vega's degree on January 5 or 6, so birthdays from about January 3 to January 8 bring the natal Sun within orb. The angles need an accurate birth time: at mid-northern latitudes the Ascendant crosses the six degrees around Vega in about twenty-three minutes.

Canopy works this out in the app from your birth date, time and place; the website has no Vega astrology calculator. A contact appears in the Chart tab's Fixed Star Conjunctions under Behenian Fixed Stars, marked "Star: Benefic," and opens the star page, which adds the house Vega falls in.

## How to make a Vega talisman: chrysolite and savory

Canopy's answer to how to make a Vega talisman is the materials and the moment. The About & Correspondences page of every Vega window lists:

- **Gemstone · al-Jawhar:** Chrysolite (Peridot)
- **Herb · al-Ḥashīsha:** Savory
- **Planetary Nature:** Venus and Mercury

The star page agrees in shorter words (Stone: Chrysolite, Plant: Savory, Planetary Natures: Venus & Mercury). Chrysolite is the green stone now sold as peridot, and the medieval Behenian lists already paired Vega with it and with winter savory. Under Traditional Uses the star page gives the tradition's aim: "talismans for artistic excellence, using chrysolite and savory." That is the tradition's claim as the app reports it, not a promise.

A Vega talisman is not a [Venus talisman](https://canopyastro.com/venus-talisman.html) or a [Mercury talisman](https://canopyastro.com/mercury-talisman.html). Each planet has its own metal, stone and herb and a window set by its own hour and its place on an angle; a Vega window is set by the star's degree and the Moon. Canopy gives no construction steps.

## When to make a Vega talisman: the Vega election

The Vega election asks for two things at once: Vega's degree within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, and the Moon applying to Vega by conjunction, sextile or trine, within two degrees of exact. The degree reaches both angles every day; the Moon supplies the rarity, with five approaches a month: the conjunction from Capricorn, sextiles from Scorpio and Pisces, trines from Taurus and Virgo. A window lasts about eight minutes at mid-northern latitudes.

Here Vega is unusual. Its degree lies in Capricorn, the sign of the Moon's [detriment](https://canopyastro.com/essential-dignities.html#detriment-fall-and-the-peregrine-planet), a trait it shares, among the fifteen Behenian stars, only with Alphecca, which sits in Scorpio, her fall. Canopy sets a window aside when the Moon is in her detriment or her fall, except when she is conjoining a star in the star's own sign. So the conjunction from Capricorn, the strongest approach, survives only by that exception, and the sextile from Scorpio never does: four of the five monthly approaches can open a Vega window. The trine from Taurus comes with the Moon exalted, though the score ignores her dignity.

Vega is also subject to the lane's shared refusals: a combust Moon; a Moon applying by square or opposition to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, or applying to the South Node, to conjoin an afflicted planet, or to Mars or Saturn out of dignity; and Vega itself within three degrees of Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet. Refused moments are simply not listed; the shared rules are on the [talismanic timing](https://canopyastro.com/talismanic-timing.html#fixed-star-talisman-windows-in-canopy) page.

A window that passes is scored on the Moon's aspect, where a conjunction counts double a sextile or trine, on the angle, and on the Moon's condition, best when she is waxing and not void of course. Vega windows score from 50 to 100 percent, and only conjunctions reach 80. Vega's benefic nature adds nothing: Fixed Star Talismans scores every star alike.

A Moon conjoining Vega always stands in the twenty-third mansion, [*Saʿd Bulaʿ*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#sad-bula), a Mixed mansion despite its lucky name; the lunar-mansion filter narrows results by mansion but does not change the score. To follow the Seek list's culmination, the Angle filter can keep Midheaven windows only. No planetary hour is required.

## Finding Vega in Canopy

In the Talismans tab, open Fixed Star Talismans. The picker lists all thirty-five stars, with Vega preselected among the fifteen Behenian ones; tap None, then Vega, to search it alone. Choose a place and a date range, seven days by default and up to about six months, and tap Search Stars. Canopy keeps the best-scored windows for each star, a short list, sorted soonest first or by Top Rated; each opens as "Vega Talisman" with its exact time and window. The Elections tab's Fixed Stars entry runs the same search and titles each result "Vega Election". Talisman scanning needs an active subscription.
