# Procyon, al-Shiʿrā al-Shamiyyah: the fixed star in astrology, its talisman and its election

al-Shiʿrā al-Shamiyyah — the Syrian Shiʿrā, Alpha Canis Minoris

## Procyon star meaning: the Syrian Shiʿrā

**Procyon** has two names, and together they give the Procyon star meaning. The Greek *Prokyōn* means "before the dog": seen from Greece and other mid-northern latitudes, the star rises a little ahead of Sirius, the Dog Star. The Arabic *al-Shiʿrā al-Shāmiyya* means "the Syrian Shiʿrā", the northern one of a pair, with Sirius to its south. Canopy files the Procyon fixed star under that name, spelled al-Shiʿrā al-Shamiyyah, and Procyon astrology in the app starts there: a Benefic star of Mercury and Mars, and one of the fifteen [Behenian stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html#the-fifteen-behenian-stars) of the talismanic tradition.

Arabic lore also called it *al-Ghumayṣāʾ*, "the bleary-eyed". In the story told on our [Canopus page](https://canopyastro.com/canopus.html), it is the sister of Suhayl who stayed behind and wept when [Sirius](https://canopyastro.com/sirius.html) crossed the Milky Way after him.

## Where the Procyon fixed star sits

The Procyon fixed star degree is about 26° of tropical Cancer: 26°06′ for 2025 in Canopy's catalog, and 26°07′ on the star page's Current Position card on October 25, 2026, since the app advances every star for precession at 50.29″ a year. Natal contacts use the star's place on the birth date, near 25°11′ Cancer for a birth in 1960. Its present degree lies just inside the tenth lunar mansion, [*al-Jabha*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-jabha), the Forehead, which opens at 25°43′ Cancer. Sirius, the other Behenian star in the sign, stands near 14°24′ (2025).

Procyon is Alpha Canis Minoris, shown in Canopy at magnitude 0.37. At declination +5.22° it rises and sets everywhere people live; only beyond about 84.8° south does it never come up.

## Procyon in astrology: a benefic star of Mercury and Mars

Canopy's badge for Procyon reads Benefic, and its planetary natures are Mercury and Mars, written "Star nature: Mercury–Mars" on the Today screen. Here the app and Ptolemy agree: the *Tetrabiblos* (I.9) gives Procyon the temperament of Mercury and, to a lesser degree, Mars. A Procyon window's About & Correspondences page opens with "Nature of Mercury (ʿUṭārid)" and the window's rating, then: "Procyon (al-Shiʿrā al-Shamiyyah) is a benefic fixed star of the nature of Mercury and Mars."

The star page's Talisman Correspondences card says what the star is for. Seek: activity, willful success. Avoid: long-term planning.

## Procyon conjunct the Sun, the Moon or an angle

Canopy checks Procyon against each natal planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and both lunar Nodes, and counts a contact within three degrees. The Chart tab lists it under Fixed Star Conjunctions, in the Behenian group: the sample chart in the screenshot at the top of this page shows "Saturn (Zuḥal) · Procyon", "Conjunct your natal Saturn (Zuḥal) · 2.1°" and "Star: Benefic".

There is one reading for every contact, drawn from the classical sources: "Al-Shiʿrā al-Shamiyyah (The Syrian Star) grants sudden preferment and wealth followed by possible fall. When conjunct a natal planet, it brings quick success and alertness, but you must plan for sustainability. Swift fortunes and swift reversals are both possible." Canopy writes no separate text for Procyon conjunct the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant or the Midheaven.

The Sun reaches the star's degree around July 18, so births from about July 15 to July 21 carry a Sun contact; Moon and angle contacts depend on the hour and place. For transits, the Today screen's Fixed Stars card picks up a planet within two degrees of the star, and the full reading lists wider aspects under Fixed Star Influences.

## How to make a Procyon talisman

Canopy's answer to how to make a Procyon talisman is its materials and its moment. The Correspondences card, reached from the About & Correspondences page of any Procyon window, lists:

- **Gemstone** (*al-Jawhar*): agate.
- **Herb** (*al-Ḥashīsha*): marigold.
- **Planetary Nature**: Mercury and Mars.

The star page agrees under Stone, Plant and "Planetary Natures: Mercury & Mars", and its Traditional Uses line ties the talisman to quick results, "using agate and marigold". Canopy gives no construction steps, no metal and no procedure, and treats the subject as history and timing, not as a promise that a talisman works.

## When to make a Procyon talisman: the Procyon election

Canopy times a star's talisman by degrees. A Procyon window needs the star's ecliptic degree within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, and the Moon applying to the star by conjunction, sextile or trine, within two degrees of exact. The app does not check whether Procyon itself is above the horizon, and the two Shiʿrās show the difference: both lie south of the ecliptic, Sirius far more, so from mid-northern latitudes Procyon's light rises first, yet Sirius's degree reaches the Ascendant about twelve degrees ahead of Procyon's.

For Procyon the Moon must stand between about 24° and 26° of Cancer for the conjunction, of Taurus or Virgo for a sextile, or of Pisces or Scorpio for a trine. Scorpio is her fall, and Canopy excuses detriment or fall only for a conjunction in the star's own sign, so a trine from late Scorpio is always set aside. Around July 18 the Sun stands on the star, so a Moon conjoining it then is combust and set aside too. A conjoining Moon lodges at the end of [*al-Ṭarf*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-tarf), a *Naḥs* mansion in Canopy, or in the first minutes of *al-Jabha*, a *Saʿd* one; the mansion is a search filter, not part of the score.

The other tests apply to every star (see [fixed-star talisman windows](https://canopyastro.com/talismanic-timing.html#fixed-star-talisman-windows-in-canopy)): the Moon must not be combust, apply to the South Node, to an undignified Mars or Saturn, or by square or opposition to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, or by conjunction to an afflicted planet, and no Mars, Saturn, South Node or afflicted planet may stand within three degrees of the star. Procyon has none of the exemptions given to [Algol](https://canopyastro.com/algol.html) and [Alkaid](https://canopyastro.com/alkaid.html).

A passing moment is scored out of ten: six for the Moon's conjunction or three for a sextile or trine, two for the angle, and two when the Moon is waxing and not void of course, one if only one holds. Every Procyon window scores 50 to 100 percent, and 70 or more is Excellent. Its Benefic nature earns nothing here, though purpose searches, such as those for a [wedding](https://canopyastro.com/wedding-date-astrology.html) or a [launch](https://canopyastro.com/launch-a-business-astrology.html), count a Benefic star on an angle in a window's favor. A window runs from one degree before the exact crossing to one degree after: a few minutes each way, never more than thirty.

### Two imagined Procyon windows

Late on an August morning, Procyon's degree culminates while the Moon, waxing at 25° Scorpio, applies to it by trine. Nothing else is wrong, but Scorpio is her fall, and the moment is set aside. On a May afternoon, Procyon's degree is on the Midheaven and the Moon, waxing at 25° Cancer and not void of course, applies to it by conjunction, and every other test passes. It scores six, two and two: 100 percent, Excellent.

## Finding Procyon in Canopy

Open Talismans, then Fixed Star Talismans; the Fixed Stars entry on the Elections tab opens the same search, with results headed "Procyon Election" instead of "Procyon Talisman". The picker lists all 35 of Canopy's stars with their Arabic names and starts with the fifteen Behenian stars selected: tap None, then Procyon. A window is local, so set the place: Canopy uses the location you pick, then where you are, then your birth place. The range runs a week by default and up to about six months. Tap Search Stars; searching needs an active subscription.

Canopy keeps the best-scored windows for each star, so expect a short list, soonest first unless you choose Top Rated, with filters for Moon phase, angle, the Moon's motion and lunar mansion. Each opens as Procyon Talisman, with its Arabic name, time and score. Its TIMING block gives the exact time, the start and end, the hour and day rulers, the Ascendant and Midheaven signs and the Moon's aspect to the star; then come Celestial Configuration, "Why this time?" and About & Correspondences.

## Questions

**What does Procyon mean in astrology?**

In Canopy, Procyon is a Benefic Behenian star of Mercury and Mars, the natures Ptolemy gives it. It favors activity and willful success and is the wrong star for long-term planning. On a natal planet, Ascendant or Midheaven the reading, drawn from the classical sources, speaks of sudden preferment and quick success, with swift reversals possible.

**What does the name Procyon mean?**

Procyon is Greek for “before the dog”: from mid-northern latitudes it rises a little ahead of Sirius, the Dog Star. The Arabic *al-Shiʿrā al-Shāmiyya* means the Syrian, or northern, Shiʿrā. Arabic lore also called it *al-Ghumayṣāʾ*, the bleary-eyed.

**What degree is Procyon in astrology?**

About 26° of tropical Cancer: 26°06′ for 2025 in Canopy's catalog, and 26°07′ on its star page on October 25, 2026. Natal contacts use the star's place on your birth date.

**What does Procyon conjunct the Sun or Ascendant mean?**

Canopy gives one reading for any contact within three degrees, with a planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or a Node: sudden preferment and wealth followed by possible fall, quick success and alertness, and a reminder to plan for sustainability. A Sun contact belongs to births from about July 15 to July 21.

**How do you make a Procyon talisman?**

Canopy gives what to use and when, not how: agate, marigold and the natures of Mercury and Mars, and the minutes when Procyon's degree is within one degree of the Ascendant or Midheaven while the Moon applies to it. It gives no construction steps and does not claim that a talisman works.

**When is the best time to make a Procyon talisman?**

When Procyon's degree is rising or culminating where you are and a waxing Moon, not void of course, closes on it by conjunction from late Cancer: if every other test passes, Canopy scores that window 100 percent. Sextiles from late Taurus or Virgo and trines from late Pisces can pass too; a trine from late Scorpio never does.

**Is Procyon a benefic or a malefic star?**

Canopy marks it Benefic, of Mercury and Mars. In purpose searches a Benefic star on an angle counts in a window's favor, and Procyon never rules a window out; in Fixed Star Talismans no star's nature changes the score.
