# The Best Day to Launch a Business: Electing a Beginning

Ibtidāʾ al-Tijārah — the beginning of a trade

11 min read · From the classical sources · Updated October 24, 2026

## A founding is a beginning

**The best day to launch a business** is not a weekday or a date that suits every founder. In [electional astrology](https://canopyastro.com/electional-astrology.html), the art the Arabic authors called *al-ikhtiyārāt*, "the choices", a founding is a beginning like a marriage or a journey, and a matter was held to carry the character of the sky it began under. You set the days on which you could open, and the search finds the window whose sky suits commerce best. The answer is the strongest window in your range, and it differs from one founder, city and season to the next.

Al-Manṣūr's astrologers, Nawbakht and Māshāʾallāh among them, are said to have chosen the hour in 762 when the foundations of Baghdad were laid. Sahl ibn Bishr, who gathered the rules of elections into a book, also set the art's limit: an election cannot help a matter the nativity denies. A well-chosen opening is a sound footing, not a promise of profit.

Canopy's purpose for it is Launch Business or Product: starting a company, launching a product, opening a store or beginning any new commercial venture. Elect the moment that truly starts the thing, the doors opening or the product going on sale. Canopy's own advice is to time the launch itself, since a business makes many later decisions and one chart does not cover them all.

## The houses of a venture

Each kind of matter has its own houses. The time to start a business is read through the second house, of money, and the tenth, of standing and reputation. The second holds what the venture earns; the tenth, its name and its trade. The first house, the Ascendant, stands for the one who begins, here the owner, and the eleventh, which Abū Maʿshar gave to hope and good fortune, completes the four houses Canopy weighs for a launch.

In every candidate window Canopy scores the lords of all four houses for strength: by their [essential dignities](https://canopyastro.com/essential-dignities.html), by whether they stand on an angle, and by whether they are retrograde or burnt by the Sun. If the lord of the second or of the tenth is combust or retrograde, the window is set aside. And when the lord of the Ascendant, the owner, is not stronger than the lord of the second, the matter's own house, the window is capped at 90%.

Every matter also has its significators, the planets that signify it by nature. For a launch Canopy takes two: Mercury, the planet of reckoning and trade, and Jupiter, the planet of increase. Each gains in its own sign or exaltation, loses in its detriment or fall, and loses ground when combust unless it stands in the heart of the Sun. If either is retrograde, the window is set aside.

The Moon is not a significator of a launch in Canopy's rules, yet she is weighed in every election as the general signifier of beginnings: her condition at the opening is the condition the matter starts in.

## Weekday and hour

Popular advice says to launch on a Wednesday, the day of Mercury, or on a Thursday, the day of Jupiter. The rule is a simplification of the [planetary hours](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-hours.html). Each day takes its name from the planet of its first hour after sunrise, but the hours go on turning in the Chaldean order, and every day holds hours of all seven planets. The tradition gave [Mercury's hour](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-hours.html#what-each-hour-was-used-for) to reckoning and trade, Jupiter's to petitions and increase, and the Sun's to dealings with those in authority.

Canopy follows the hour, not the weekday: in a Launch search the day's ruler is not scored. The hours of Mercury, Jupiter and the Sun are favoured for a launch, and every election also weighs each hour by its planet, Jupiter's and Venus's most, the Sun's next, and Mars's and Saturn's against. Taken together, an hour of Jupiter carries the most weight in a Launch search, followed by the Sun's. A Mars or Saturn hour lowers a window without ruling it out, and so does an hour whose lord is retrograde or combust. The hours are unequal, twelve from sunrise to sunset and twelve through the night, so their length changes with the season and the place.

So the useful form of the Wednesday rule is narrower: look for an hour of Mercury or Jupiter inside a sound sky, on whichever day it falls. The hour was always one layer among several, and an hour well chosen under an afflicted Moon did not make a sound beginning.

## The Moon at the opening

Some faults strike a window out whatever else it holds. On every purpose search Canopy sets a window aside when the Moon is combust, within 8.5° of the Sun; joined to the South Node within 8°; void of course, a beginning that Sahl and al-Bīrūnī read as coming to nothing; or in the *via combusta*, the burnt path from 19° Libra to 15° Scorpio. A window is also refused when Mars or Saturn is within 3° of the Ascendant, or the lord of the Ascendant is combust. The Moon *cazimi*, in the heart of the Sun, is exempt, and a Moon merely under the beams, 8.5° to 12° from the Sun, is allowed in with a caution.

A launch adds refusals of its own. Mars or Saturn anywhere in the first whole-sign house, the owner's house, rules the window out; in the tenth, the house of the trade, either one is a caution that lowers the score. A malefic fixed star rising or culminating rules out a window for any purpose, and Algol on an angle counts against a launch. Among the windows that pass, a waxing Moon counts in the window's favour.

Then there is the mansion. The Moon passes through the [28 lunar mansions](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#all-28-lunar-mansions) in about a month, each 12°51′ of the tropical zodiac from 0° Aries, and Canopy keeps its own lists of those that favour a launch and those that forbid one. A forbidden mansion costs a window heavily, as a penalty rather than an outright refusal. These lists take the place of each mansion's general nature, so a mansion counted Naḥs in the [general table](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#sad-and-nahs) can be favoured here. The mansion lore Canopy draws on ties several favoured ones to trade: al-Dhirāʿ and al-ʿAwwāʾ to the increase of trade, Saʿd al-Suʿūd to trade and petitions, al-Fargh al-Thānī and Baṭn al-Ḥūt to gain and merchandise.

## A launch is several elections

A business rarely begins in a single act. There is the lease or the partnership agreement, the money put in, the licence applied for, the terms with a supplier, and the day the doors open. Canopy's advice is to pick the purpose for the step you are timing, since each step is its own beginning. Five of its sixteen purposes bear on a new venture.

The signing is the plainest case. A contract, a negotiation or a dispute looks to the seventh, the house of the other party, where the comparison between the lords of the Ascendant and the seventh decides whose side the moment favors. Canopy applies that comparison in Signing Contracts & Agreements and in Negotiations & Disputes: a lord of the Ascendant stronger than the lord of the seventh raises the window, and a weaker one lowers it.

*Five elections for a new venture, as Canopy scores them*

| Purpose | The step it times | Significators | Favoured hours | Among its refusals |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch Business or Product | The opening itself | Mercury, Jupiter | Mercury, Jupiter, the Sun | Mars or Saturn in the 1st; lord of the 2nd or 10th combust or retrograde |
| Signing Contracts & Agreements | The signing | Mercury, Venus | Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, the Sun | Mars or Saturn in the 1st or 7th |
| Investments & Financial Decisions | The moment you commit the money | Jupiter, Mercury | Mercury, Jupiter, the Sun | Mars or Saturn in the 1st or 7th; lord of the 2nd or 8th combust or retrograde |
| Negotiations & Disputes | The conversation you begin | Mercury, Venus | Mercury, Jupiter, the Sun | Mars or Saturn in the 7th, unless in its detriment or fall |
| Seeking Authority & Approval | The request for a permit, licence or approval | The Sun, Jupiter | The Sun, Jupiter | The Sun in the 6th, 8th or 12th; lord of the 10th combust or retrograde |

Beyond the table, Signing Contracts & Agreements counts Saturn's hour against a window and favours the Moon in Gemini, Virgo or Libra; Investments & Financial Decisions favours al-Buṭayn, al-Zubra and Saʿd al-Suʿūd; Seeking Authority & Approval counts Regulus and Sirius in its favour. In each, a retrograde significator sets a window aside, the Sun excepted.

Traditional electional astrology is also a discipline of compromise. A perfect sky rarely arrives on the week you need it. The astrologer's work is to remove the gravest faults, strengthen what can be strengthened, and accept a sound moment rather than wait indefinitely for a flawless one. The result is an informed choice of timing, made with reflection, alongside the ordinary care any beginning deserves.

## How to find launch day in Canopy

Open Elections and choose Events. On the Natal Elections screen, set the location to the place where the business will open. Under What are you electing for? choose Launch Business or Product, set the date range (three months to begin with, up to about six), and tap Find Best Moments. Canopy calculates every window in the app, from the sky and your birth details if you have entered them.

It lists the windows that score 50% or more, for one, three or six months, sorted by Soonest or by Best Quality. Open a window and it lists what counted for the time and what counted against it. The score rates the timing by astrology's rules; it is not the chance of a good outcome.

If a landlord or a trade fair has already fixed the date, Evaluate a Specific Time checks it. It rates the sky at that time in general and does not ask for a purpose, so it does not apply the launch rules. The same screen holds the purposes for a marriage, set out in [wedding date astrology](https://canopyastro.com/wedding-date-astrology.html), and the rest of [Canopy's sixteen purposes](https://canopyastro.com/electional-astrology.html#everything-canopys-elections-engine-can-time).

## Your own chart in the score

Sahl ibn Bishr held that a beginning chosen for someone works best when it suits that person's own nativity, and Canopy weighs your birth chart when you have entered it. It does so within a bound. Windows are first ranked by the election chart alone; your natal fit is then added to the displayed score, never by more than 10 points either way, so your chart can lift or lower a window but cannot turn a poor sky into a good one.

For a launch, your natal second and tenth houses come in through Jupiter. Jupiter conjunct, trine or sextile the lord of your natal second or tenth counts in the window's favour, as does Jupiter passing through either house, and Jupiter on your natal Midheaven is the strongest single natal factor. An election Ascendant in the sign of your natal eleventh house counts for commerce, unless your natal Mars or Saturn is there. Against the window count an election Ascendant in your natal sixth, eighth or twelfth sign, and an election Ascendant or Moon close to your natal Saturn or Mars.

The [Lot of Fortune](https://canopyastro.com/arabic-lots.html#the-lot-of-fortune), part of the natal chart Canopy casts for you, is where the tradition read wealth alongside the second house. In an election Canopy watches the election chart's own Lot of Fortune instead: a Moon in the third, sixth, eighth or twelfth sign from it is a caution, a rule the Picatrix attributes to Dorotheus. Your natal lot is shown in your chart; it is not added to a window's score.

Birth data is optional. Without it, windows are scored by the sky alone; with it, each window can open Your Chart at Election Time, a bi-wheel with your natal planets inside and the election moment outside. For the wider method, see [how Canopy reads an election](https://canopyastro.com/electional-astrology.html#how-canopy-reads-an-election).

## Questions

**Is choosing a launch day in Canopy the same as a muhurat?**

No. Muhurat is the name Indian astrology gives to an auspicious time, and its methods belong to that tradition. Canopy calculates nothing of that system: no tithi, no panchang and no sidereal ayanamsa. It uses the tropical zodiac, whole-sign houses and the 28 Arabian lunar mansions, and the rules it applies to an election are drawn from the classical authors, among them Sahl ibn Bishr, al-Bīrūnī and the Picatrix.

**Does Mercury retrograde matter for a business launch?**

In Canopy it does, through the significators rather than as a general rule. Mercury and Jupiter are the significators of a launch, and while either one is retrograde a Launch Business or Product search sets every window aside. Jupiter stays retrograde for about four months at a time, so a search that falls wholly inside such a stretch can come back empty; widen the range towards six months to reach the windows beyond it.

**Is Wednesday the best day to launch a business?**

Not as such. Wednesday is Mercury's day because its first hour after sunrise belongs to Mercury, but Canopy weighs the planetary hour, not the weekday, and hours of Mercury and Jupiter fall on every day of the week. The best day is the one in your range whose hour, Moon and Ascendant suit a launch best, whichever weekday it is.

**Does a high score mean the business will succeed?**

No. The score rates the timing by astrology's rules; it is not the chance of a good outcome. An election improves the conditions of a beginning; the tradition held that it cannot help where the nativity denies the matter, and it says nothing about the product, the market or the price.

**What if the launch date is already fixed?**

Use Evaluate a Specific Time. It rates the sky at the date and time you give, in general, and does not ask for a purpose, so it does not apply the launch rules. To compare many times for a launch, use Find Best Moments with Launch Business or Product.

**Which election should I use to sign the lease or the partnership agreement?**

Signing Contracts & Agreements. It looks to the seventh house, the other party, and takes Mercury and Venus as its significators, while Launch Business or Product is for the opening itself. Each step of a plan is its own beginning, so a lease, an investment and the opening day can each have their own window.
