# The Jupiter talisman: how and when to make it

Tilsam al-Mushtarī — the talisman of Jupiter

## Jupiter talisman meaning: the work of the greater fortune

**A Jupiter talisman**, the talisman of Jupiter, was in the Arabic tradition an image made in Jupiter's hour while Jupiter stood strong, for the matters of the greater fortune: increase, wealth and the good will of those in power. The word is *ṭilasm*, and Canopy heads Jupiter's window page *Tilsam al-Mushtarī*, from the planet's Arabic name. The great handbook of the art, the *Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm* that Latin readers knew as the *Picatrix*, asks that a work addressed to Jupiter, as to any planet, be made while it is strong.

In the app the meaning is brief. The purpose line reads "Wealth, expansion, and favor from those above you"; the ABOUT card speaks of a work "for wealth, expansion, and favor from those in authority"; and the Virtue row calls Jupiter the "Greater Fortune" and the "Celestial King of Thursday". These describe the planet and promise nothing; this page reads the subject as history and timing.

## How to make a Jupiter talisman: tin, sapphire, saffron and cedar

Asked how to make a Jupiter talisman, the timing tradition answered with the planet's matter and the planet's moment. Canopy gives the matter on its Correspondences screen, *al-Munāsabāt*, opened from the About & Correspondences page of any Jupiter window:

- **Metal** (*al-Maʿdan*): tin, *al-Qaṣdīr*.
- **Gemstone** (*al-Jawhar*): sapphire.
- **Color** (*al-Lawn*): blue and purple.
- **Fumigation** (*al-Bakhūr*) and **Herb** (*al-Ḥashīsha*): saffron or cedar, the same pair in both rows.

The window page's Talisman Correspondences block agrees on the tin, the sapphire and the colors, and names cedar alone as the incense. All of it is drawn from the classical correspondences, and none of it comes with construction steps.

## The planetary hour of Jupiter

The hours run in the Chaldean order, slowest planet first: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon. Each day's planet rules its first hour at sunrise, so Thursday opens in an hour of Jupiter. Day and night each have twelve unequal hours, and since twenty-four does not divide by seven, Jupiter's hours shift through the week. Counted from sunrise to sunrise, the planetary hour of Jupiter falls:

- **Thursday:** the 1st and 8th hours of the day; the 3rd and 10th of the night.
- **Friday:** the 5th and 12th of the day; the 7th of the night.
- **Saturday:** the 2nd and 9th of the day; the 4th and 11th of the night.
- **Sunday:** the 6th of the day; the 1st and 8th of the night.
- **Monday:** the 3rd and 10th of the day; the 5th and 12th of the night.
- **Tuesday:** the 7th of the day; the 2nd and 9th of the night.
- **Wednesday:** the 4th and 11th of the day; the 6th of the night.

The table follows from the rule; the app does not print it. In Canopy the hour is required, so every Jupiter window's Hour Ruler box names Jupiter, while Thursday is only scored, two points for "Jupiter rules the planetary day". That day runs from sunrise but the Day Ruler box follows the calendar, so a window in Thursday's tenth night hour, usually after midnight, earns Thursday's points while the box reads Venus. ## When to make a Jupiter talisman: the sign, the season and the hour

The Talismans tab sums up the rule: a dignified planet on an angle, for its own virtue. For Jupiter it runs on three clocks: the sign, which changes about once a year; the retrograde and the conjunction with the Sun, which return about every thirteen months; and the hour and the angle, which turn within the day.

### The sign decides the year

Canopy sets Jupiter aside in its detriment, in its fall and wherever it holds no dignity, so the sign Jupiter is crossing decides what a whole year can hold:

- **Sagittarius and Pisces**, its domiciles, and **Cancer**, its exaltation: every degree passes.
- **Aries and Leo:** every degree by night, through the fire triplicity; by day only Jupiter's term, the first six degrees, and in Leo its face, 10°–20°.
- **Taurus, Libra, Scorpio and Aquarius:** only Jupiter's term (Taurus 14°–22°, Libra 14°–21°, Scorpio 19°–24°, Aquarius 13°–20°), and in Libra its face, 20°–30°.
- **Gemini and Virgo**, its detriments, and **Capricorn**, its fall: nothing, whatever term or face Jupiter holds there.

So for roughly three years in every twelve, Canopy finds no Jupiter window at all: an inference from the rules, not a line the app prints. The [terms and faces](https://canopyastro.com/essential-dignities.html#triplicity-egyptian-bounds-and-chaldean-faces) are set out with the other dignities.

### Retrograde and the Sun's beams close whole months

Whatever the sign, Jupiter is set aside while retrograde, about four months in every thirteen, and for about a month around its conjunction with the Sun, while within Canopy's twelve-degree combustion orb. A window is also set aside while Jupiter is applying by square or opposition to Mars or Saturn. With Mars that usually passes within a few weeks; with Saturn, the slowest planet, it can last for months.

### The angle and the hour choose the minutes

Jupiter must then stand within three degrees of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, each of which it crosses once a day. Unlike the Sun, tied to sunrise and noon, Jupiter reaches them at hours that drift through the year: it rises before dawn in the months after its conjunction with the Sun and culminates in the evening in the months after its opposition. Rising a few minutes earlier each day, it slides across the planetary hours until a rising or a culmination lands in an hour of Jupiter.

The Moon thins the chances most. She must be applying to Jupiter by conjunction, sextile or trine, within eight degrees: five stretches in each circuit of the Moon, each a little over half a day. The window that results is brief, roughly ten minutes either side of its exact time, as explained under [why a window lasts only minutes](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-talismans.html#why-a-window-lasts-only-minutes).

## The Jupiter talisman election, test by test

A talisman window is an election under stricter rules than Canopy's ordinary ones: a moment that fails any test above is set aside, not marked down. The tests shared by all seven planets are listed under [why a window is refused](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-talismans.html#why-a-window-is-refused); those not yet named here forbid a Moon that is combust, near the South Node, or applying by square or opposition to Mars or Saturn.

A moment that passes is scored out of 18 points and needs 50 percent to be listed. Dignity weighs most: five for Sagittarius or Pisces, four for Cancer, three for a term, two for the triplicity, one for a face. The Ascendant adds three and the Midheaven two; the hour three and Thursday two; a waxing Moon one, and the Moon's condition up to two. A last point comes from a benefic aspect, but a planet cannot help itself, so Jupiter can take it only from Venus. Its ceiling is 17 of 18, about 94 percent.

### Two imagined Jupiter skies

In the first it is the eighth hour of a Thursday, an hour of Jupiter, and Jupiter stands within a degree of the Midheaven, direct and clear of the Sun, with the Moon applying to it by trine and Venus casting it a sextile. But Jupiter is in Capricorn, the sign of its fall, and the moment is set aside before it is ever scored.

In the second it is the tenth hour of Thursday night, before dawn. Jupiter, in Pisces, its own sign, is rising within two degrees of the Ascendant, direct and well clear of the Sun. The Moon, waxing and not void of course, applies to it by trine, clear of the South Node and of any square or opposition to Mars or Saturn, and Jupiter applies to neither. The moment passes: five points for the domicile, three for the Ascendant, three for the hour, two for Thursday, one for the waxing Moon and two for her condition make 16 of 18, about 89 percent, which Canopy rates Excellent. A sextile from Venus would have brought it to 17.

## Finding Jupiter's window in Canopy

Open Talismans, then Planetary Talismans, and choose Jupiter alone among the seven bodies. Check the location, since the angles depend on it. Set the dates: the default is a week, and one search can reach six months; for Jupiter, with months closed by retrograde and the Sun, the longer span often decides whether anything comes back. Tap Search Planets.

The filters narrow the list without changing what is admitted: Angle set to ASC keeps the rising windows, MC the culminating ones. Each result opens on a page headed Jupiter Talisman, *Tilsam al-Mushtarī*, with the exact time, the window and the score, the TIMING boxes, "Why this time?" and About & Correspondences. Set Reminder alerts you thirty minutes ahead, and Save to Calendar adds it to your calendar. Birth data is optional.

For a money matter rather than a talisman, Canopy's Investments & Financial Decisions election takes Jupiter as its first significator; see [the best day to invest](https://canopyastro.com/investment-astrology.html).

Search six months ahead for Jupiter's next window.

## Questions

**What does a Jupiter talisman mean?**

In the Arabic tradition it was made under Jupiter, the greater fortune, for increase, wealth and the favor of those in authority. Canopy's purpose line for a Jupiter window reads "Wealth, expansion, and favor from those above you": a description of the planet, not a promised result.

**How do you make a Jupiter talisman?**

With what Canopy shows: from Jupiter's Correspondences screen, tin, sapphire, blue and purple, and saffron or cedar as both fumigation and herb; and a window in an hour of Jupiter, with Jupiter dignified, direct and within three degrees of the Ascendant or the Midheaven. The app gives no construction steps.

**When is the best time to make a Jupiter talisman?**

A window in which Jupiter rules the hour, holds an angle, is dignified outside Gemini, Virgo and Capricorn, and is direct and clear of the Sun, with the Moon applying to it unafflicted. The best add Sagittarius or Pisces, the Ascendant, a Thursday, a waxing Moon not void of course and a benefic aspect from Venus, for at most about 94 percent.

**What is the planetary hour of Jupiter?**

One of the unequal hours Jupiter rules in the Chaldean order: on Thursday the 1st and 8th hours after sunrise and the 3rd and 10th of the night, with twenty-four in every week. Canopy requires the hour for a Jupiter window but only scores the day, so you need not wait for a Thursday.

**Is a Jupiter talisman the same as a Jupiter amulet?**

The words are often used for the same thing. In the tradition this page follows, a talisman was defined by the moment of its making, chosen while Jupiter was strong. Canopy finds that moment and shows Jupiter's correspondences; it does not make or sell talismans, amulets or rings.

**Why does Canopy show no Jupiter talisman window?**

Usually because Jupiter could not pass in that span: retrograde, within twelve degrees of the Sun, in Gemini, Virgo or Capricorn, applying by square or opposition to Mars or Saturn, or with no Moon applying to it. The app does not say which test failed: it reports that nothing in the stretch qualified and suggests a longer span, up to six months.

## The greater fortune, on the angle.

Canopy finds the minutes when Jupiter, direct and dignified, holds the Ascendant or the Midheaven in its own hour, and sets a moment aside when Jupiter is in its fall or detriment or the Moon is afflicted.
