# El Nath, al-Naṭḥ: the fixed star in astrology, its talisman and its election

al-Naṭḥ — the butting, El Nath, Beta Tauri

## El Nath star meaning: the name al-Naṭḥ

The **El Nath star meaning** lies in its Arabic name, *al-Naṭḥ*, “the butting”: the star marks the tip of the Bull's northern horn. In El Nath astrology Canopy keeps the Arabic; on the Chart tab, the Today screen and the talisman screens, *al-Naṭḥ* follows the name of the El Nath fixed star, and its natal reading glosses it “The Butting One”. The International Astronomical Union spells it Elnath.

The old catalogs shared it with the Charioteer, so Johann Bayer gave it two letters, β Tauri and γ Aurigae. The same Arabic word is an old name of the first lunar mansion, at the Ram's horns, which Canopy's mansion guide lists as [*al-Sharaṭān*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-sharatan); star and mansion are distinct. El Nath is not one of the fifteen [Behenian stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html#the-fifteen-behenian-stars).

## Where the El Nath fixed star sits

Canopy places the El Nath fixed star at 22°55′ Gemini, its tropical longitude for 2025, and moves it with precession: on October 25, 2026, its page shows 22°56′ (82.9495°) and magnitude 1.65. The degree lies in the seventh mansion, [*al-Dhirāʿ*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-dhira), the Forearm.

[Capella](https://canopyastro.com/capella.html), a Behenian star, stands 45′ earlier at 22°10′ Gemini, and [Bellatrix](https://canopyastro.com/bellatrix.html) at 21°18′. In the sky they are far apart, Capella about 46° north of the celestial equator, El Nath 28°36′, Bellatrix 6°21′, but Canopy measures stars by zodiac degree, so on its screens the three are neighbors. El Nath itself rises everywhere except beyond about 61°S.

## El Nath in astrology: a star of Mars alone

Mars is El Nath's only planet in Canopy. Its star page wears a Martial badge, the Planetary Nature card shows Mars with nothing beside it, and the Today screen's line reads “Star nature: Mars”. Of the thirty-five stars, only [Pollux](https://canopyastro.com/pollux.html) shares that single planet.

On days El Nath leads the Today screen's star card, it adds “Seek: conquest, bold enterprise.” and “Avoid: diplomatic negotiations, peace-making.” On the star page, Traditional Uses reads: “Talismans for overcoming enemies, securing victory in physical or legal contests, and lending iron resolve to difficult undertakings.”

In Canopy's purpose searches the nature counts: a moment anchored by a Martial, Saturnine or Malefic star's degree on the Ascendant or Midheaven is set aside, in a [negotiation](https://canopyastro.com/negotiation-astrology.html) search as in any other (see [electional astrology](https://canopyastro.com/electional-astrology.html)).

## El Nath conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

For a natal reading Canopy needs your birth date, time and place, and it counts only the conjunction. The star's longitude is carried back to the day you were born; if it falls within three degrees of a classical planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or either lunar Node, the Chart tab lists the contact under Other Conjunctions and the star's page gives the reading, drawn from the classical sources: “Al-Naṭḥ (The Butting One) is the tip of the northern horn of Taurus, carrying a purely Martial nature. When conjunct a natal planet, you have exceptional physical courage and the drive to break through whatever obstructs the path forward. Success comes through bold enterprise and the willingness to act where others hesitate, but the star cautions against excess force that turns allies into adversaries.”

Every point gets those same words, whether El Nath is conjunct the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant or the Midheaven; the IC and Descendant are not tested. Sun contacts belong to births from about June 10 to 16. Most El Nath contacts also list Capella, under Behenian Fixed Stars, and many list Bellatrix. Transits within two degrees reach the Today screen; the full reading reuses the natal words.

## How to make an El Nath talisman: red jasper and thistle

El Nath's own page in Canopy carries a Correspondences card naming a gemstone, red jasper, and an herb, thistle. They are Canopy's choice; the classical Behenian lists do not include El Nath. Red jasper appears once more in the app, for Pollux.

A window's About & Correspondences page reads “El Nath (al-Naṭḥ) is a martial fixed star of the nature of Mars.” but lists no stone or herb; its About El Nath row opens the star page that does. Canopy gives no method of making; see also the [Mars talisman](https://canopyastro.com/mars-talisman.html).

## When to make an El Nath talisman: the El Nath election

Canopy treats the El Nath talisman and the El Nath election as one search. A moment needs two things at once: El Nath's zodiac degree within one degree of the Ascendant or Midheaven, whatever the star's own height above the horizon, and the Moon applying to it by conjunction, sextile or trine, no more than two degrees short of exact. She then stands at about 21° to 23° of Gemini, Aries, Leo, Libra or Aquarius, never Scorpio or Capricorn, so her detriment and fall never apply.

Even then a moment is set aside when the Moon is combust; when she applies by square or opposition to one of the five planets, or by conjunction to an afflicted planet, an undignified Mars or Saturn, or the South Node; or when Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet lies within three degrees of the star. From about June 3 to 22 the Sun makes a conjoining Moon combust, so conjunction windows fall outside those weeks. Jupiter, in its detriment in Gemini, blocks every moment while within three degrees of El Nath, as Mars or Saturn would; Mercury, at home in Gemini, only when combust or retrograde.

Scoring is out of ten: the Moon's conjunction earns 6, a sextile or trine 3; the angle 2; a waxing Moon 1, and a Moon not void of course 1 more. El Nath's Martial nature neither adds nor subtracts. A waxing, not-void Moon at 22° Gemini joining the star as its degree rises makes 100 percent, Excellent; a waning, void Moon at 22° Aquarius trining it as its degree culminates makes 50, Good, and is still listed.

Either angle crosses the two degrees around the star's degree in about eight or nine minutes, and the Moon holds her two degrees for three or four hours, so windows are short. The rules every star shares are under [fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy](https://canopyastro.com/talismanic-timing.html#fixed-star-talisman-windows-in-canopy).

## Finding an El Nath window in Canopy

Pick Fixed Star Talismans in the Talismans tab, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab. All 35 stars are listed with their Arabic names, and the fifteen Behenian arrive already selected, Capella among them: clear them with None, select El Nath, give a place and a span of up to about six months, then tap Search Stars. Running it needs an active subscription.

Filters on the search screen narrow the list by the Moon's phase and motion, the angle and the lunar mansion; with El Nath searched alone, choosing *al-Dhirāʿ* leaves just the conjunctions. Results sort Soonest or Top Rated, and a window opens as El Nath Talisman or El Nath Election, with *al-Naṭḥ* beneath, its percentage, “Nature of Mars (al-Mirrīkh)” and “Why this time?”. Only the best-scored windows per star are kept.

El Nath is from the Arabic *al-Naṭḥ*, “the butting”, the thrust of a horn: the star marks the tip of the Bull's northern horn.

**What does El Nath mean in astrology?**

Canopy gives El Nath a purely Martial nature and reads it for physical courage and bold enterprise, warning against force that turns allies into adversaries. In purpose searches a moment it anchors with its degree on the Ascendant or Midheaven is set aside.

In the minutes when about 22°55′ Gemini is within a degree of the Ascendant or Midheaven and an unafflicted Moon applies to it by conjunction, sextile or trine, with no Mars, Saturn, South Node or afflicted planet within three degrees of the star. A waxing Moon's conjunction scores highest.

**Is El Nath a Behenian star?**

No. It is one of the twenty non-Behenian stars among Canopy's thirty-five, though its nearest neighbor by zodiac degree, Capella, 45′ earlier at 22°10′ Gemini, is Behenian.
