## Deneb Algedi star meaning: Dhanab al-Jady, the tail of the goat

**Deneb Algedi** is the star at the tail of Capricornus, the sea-goat, and in Deneb Algedi astrology the name says where to look. It is a European form of the Arabic *dhanab al-jady*, "the tail of the goat": the goat (strictly a kid) is Capricorn, and the tail is the fishlike coil in which the sea-goat ends. Canopy reads the Deneb Algedi fixed star in the Arabian tradition, names it *Dhanab al-Jady*, and glosses the name "Tail of the Goat" in its natal reading.

Astronomers call it Delta Capricorni, the brightest star of its constellation. Two other stars on Canopy's list take their names from the same word, *dhanab*, tail: [Deneb](https://canopyastro.com/deneb.html), the hen's tail in Cygnus, and [Denebola](https://canopyastro.com/denebola.html), the lion's. As one of the fifteen [Behenian fixed stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html#the-fifteen-behenian-stars), it starts out selected in Canopy's star search, with its own talisman correspondences.

## Where the Deneb Algedi fixed star sits: 23° Aquarius

By tropical longitude Deneb Algedi stood at 23°53′ Aquarius in 2025; on October 25, 2026, its star page in Canopy read 23°55′, as precession carries it slowly forward. So the tail of the constellation Capricornus falls in the tropical sign of Aquarius, inside the twenty-sixth lunar mansion, [*al-Fargh al-Awwal*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-fargh-al-awwal), the First Spout, which runs from 21°26′ Aquarius to 4°17′ Pisces.

The star lies only about 2.6 degrees south of the ecliptic, near enough for the Moon to pass in front of it, and 16 degrees south of the celestial equator, so it rises everywhere but the high Arctic. An eclipsing binary some 39 light-years away, it dips from magnitude 2.81 to 3.05; Canopy gives it 2.87.

## Deneb Algedi in astrology: a benefic of Saturn and Jupiter

Canopy files Deneb Algedi as a benefic star of the natures of Saturn and Jupiter, and here the app and Ptolemy agree: the *Tetrabiblos* (I.9) gives the stars in the tail of Capricorn the temperament of Saturn and Jupiter. Among the fifteen, only [Capella](https://canopyastro.com/capella.html) shares the pair, and Canopy names Jupiter first there; a Deneb Algedi window's correspondences page begins "Nature of Saturn".

The star page reads the pairing as Jupiter's growth governed by Saturn's structure and discipline: gains built step by step, which endure rather than arrive all at once. Its Talisman Correspondences card lists what to seek, legal matters and justice, and what to avoid, dishonesty.

## Deneb Algedi conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

Canopy calculates your chart from your birth date, time and place, and tests Deneb Algedi against the seven classical planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and both lunar Nodes. Within three degrees, the Chart tab lists the contact under Behenian Fixed Stars with "Star: Benefic", and the star page gives the reading, drawn from the classical sources: "When conjunct a natal planet, you have wisdom, sobriety, and the ability to build lasting structures. Success comes through patient effort and ethical conduct." Its Traditional Uses line reads: "Talismans for justice, benevolence, and lasting achievement, using chalcedony and marjoram."

One reading serves every point: Deneb Algedi conjunct the Sun, the Moon, Venus or the North Node each receives it. Canopy tests no outer planet, and reads no contact with the Descendant or the IC. The Sun reaches the star about February 12, so a natal Sun in orb belongs to births from about February 9 to 15.

## How to make a Deneb Algedi talisman: chalcedony, marjoram, Saturn and Jupiter

Canopy defines a Deneb Algedi talisman by what it shows and the moment it finds. On a window's About & Correspondences page, the Correspondences card gives the gemstone, *al-Jawhar*, as chalcedony; the herb, *al-Ḥashīsha*, as marjoram; and the planetary nature as Saturn and Jupiter. The star page's Stone, Plant and Planetary Natures rows agree.

The window page sums the star up: "Deneb Algedi (Dhanab al-Jady) is a benefic fixed star of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. It is one of the fifteen Behenian stars of the magical tradition." The star page calls chalcedony a stone of calm endurance and marjoram a warm, calming and fortifying herb. Canopy gives the materials and the minutes, not a procedure; the [talisman of Saturn](https://canopyastro.com/saturn-talisman.html) and the [Jupiter talisman](https://canopyastro.com/jupiter-talisman.html) follow rules of their own.

## When to make a Deneb Algedi talisman: the Deneb Algedi election

Canopy runs the Deneb Algedi talisman and the Deneb Algedi election as one search. A moment qualifies only when the star's zodiac degree is within one degree of the Ascendant (rising) or the Midheaven (culminating), not the Descendant or the IC. Canopy does not check whether the star is above the horizon, but so near the ecliptic the gap is small: the star culminates about three and a half minutes after its degree and, at latitude 40° north, rises about thirteen minutes after it, once a rising window has closed.

The Moon must be applying to the star by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees. She must not be combust, nor applying by a hard aspect to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, by conjunction to an afflicted planet, or to the South Node, or to an undignified Mars or Saturn (a rule only Algol and Alkaid escape). No Mars, Saturn, South Node or afflicted planet may stand within three degrees of the star; Saturn's share in its nature earns no exemption. A moment that fails any test is set aside.

The Moon stands in Aquarius for the conjunction, in Sagittarius or Aries for the sextiles, in Gemini or Libra for the trines, and never in Scorpio or Capricorn, her fall and detriment, so unlike [Alphecca](https://canopyastro.com/alphecca.html) or [Vega](https://canopyastro.com/vega.html) this star loses no window to the Moon's sign. Its gap is seasonal: a conjunction through most of February finds the Moon combust and is set aside, though that month's sextiles and trines can pass. The conjunction can be a true meeting, the Moon at times covering the star; Canopy scores the degree either way.

A window that passes is scored on the Moon's aspect, a conjunction counting double; the angle; and the Moon's condition, best when she is waxing and not void of course. Conjunctions score 80 to 100 percent, sextiles and trines 50 to 70, and the tier reads Excellent from 70. The star's benefic nature does not count. With the degree culminating, the Moon at 22° Aquarius applying to the conjunction and the Sun at 16° Aquarius, the Moon is combust and the moment is set aside. With the degree rising and a waxing Moon at 22°30′ Gemini, not void of course, applying to the trine, 3 points for the trine, 2 for the angle and 2 for the Moon make 70 percent, Excellent.

Windows last minutes: the exact crossing, plus the time the angle takes to move one degree either side, at most half an hour each way. At 40° north, where Aquarius rises quickly, a rising window lasts about five minutes and a culminating one about eight. The rules every star shares are under [fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy](https://canopyastro.com/talismanic-timing.html#fixed-star-talisman-windows-in-canopy).

## Deneb Algedi in purpose searches: contracts, courts and property

Most of Canopy's stars are sought by no purpose, but four Events purposes look for Deneb Algedi: Signing Contracts & Agreements, Filing Court Cases & Lawsuits, Court Appearances & Hearings, and Property & Real Estate. When the star is within a degree of the Ascendant, the Midheaven or the Descendant, Why this time? lists the line "Deneb Algedi is sought for this election", and the star counts toward the window's score. That score weighs the sky against the rules of the matter, not the chance of a good outcome, and it decides no case or sale. The guides to [the best day to sign a contract](https://canopyastro.com/contract-signing-astrology.html), [filing a lawsuit](https://canopyastro.com/filing-a-lawsuit-astrology.html), [the day of a court hearing](https://canopyastro.com/court-case-astrology.html) and [buying a house](https://canopyastro.com/buying-a-house-astrology.html) explain the rest of each search.

## Finding Deneb Algedi in Canopy

Open Fixed Star Talismans in the Talismans tab, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab. The picker lists all 35 of Canopy's stars with their Arabic names and starts with the fifteen Behenian stars selected: tap None, then Deneb Algedi. Choose a place (or the search uses your current location, then your birthplace) and a range of up to about six months, a week by default, and tap Search Stars. Scanning needs a subscription.

The star's best-scored windows come back, sorted Soonest or Top Rated, with filters for the Moon's phase and motion, the angle and the lunar mansion; set the mansion to *al-Fargh al-Awwal* and only the conjunctions remain. Each window opens on a page headed Deneb Algedi Talisman or Deneb Algedi Election.
