## Cor Caroli star meaning: Charles's heart and Qalb Sharūl

**Cor Caroli** is Latin for “Charles's heart”: Sir Charles Scarborough coined the name about 1660, and before then the star had no Western name of its own. It is the brightest star of Canes Venatici, the Hunting Dogs. Canopy gives the Cor Caroli fixed star the Arabic name *Qalb Sharūl*, “the heart of Charles”, and shows it beside the star's name.

That is a modern rendering of the Latin, so Cor Caroli astrology has no medieval Arabic lore behind it; what follows is what Canopy shows. Nor is it one of the [fifteen Behenian stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html#the-fifteen-behenian-stars): it is one of twenty more that Canopy reads beside them.

## Where the Cor Caroli fixed star sits: late Virgo, far to the north

By tropical longitude Cor Caroli stood at 24°55′ Virgo in 2025; its star page in Canopy, which gives the day's position, reads 24°56′ on October 25, 2026. Canopy gives its magnitude as 2.89; of its thirty-five stars, only Algorab and Sualocin are fainter.

It lies about 40 degrees north of the ecliptic, and north of about 52°N it never sets. Canopy tests only its degree: Cor Caroli “rising” in the app means 24°55′ Virgo on the Ascendant, whether or not the star itself is up.

Late Virgo is crowded: [Denebola](https://canopyastro.com/denebola.html) at 21°57′ and [Alkaid](https://canopyastro.com/alkaid.html), a Behenian star, at 27°17′ both lie within three degrees, so one natal planet there can carry two star contacts. On the tropical spans of the [lunar mansions](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html), the degree falls in the fourteenth, [*al-Simāk*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-simak), the Unarmed (17°09′ Virgo to 0° Libra), a Saʿd, or fortunate, mansion.

## Cor Caroli in astrology: a benefic star of Venus and Mercury

Canopy's catalog makes Cor Caroli a Benefic star of Venus and Mercury. Its star page shows a Benefic badge and both planets' glyphs, and a Cor Caroli window calls it “a benefic fixed star of the nature of Venus and Mercury”.

On a day Cor Caroli leads the Today screen's Fixed Stars card, which picks up transiting planets within two degrees of an aspect, the card reads “Star nature: Venus–Mercury” and adds what to seek, personal grace and artistic brilliance, and what to avoid, arrogance and reckless self-display.

## Cor Caroli conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

Canopy calculates your chart from your birth date, time and place, takes Cor Caroli back to its degree at your birth, and tests one aspect, the conjunction, within three degrees of the seven classical planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and the lunar Nodes. A contact appears on the Chart tab under Other Conjunctions and opens the star's page, whose reading runs, in part:

“When conjunct a natal planet, you rise to prominence through charm, generosity, and artistic or intellectual distinction. Fortune comes through display of genuine talent, and you often earn enduring public admiration.”

One text serves every point, so Cor Caroli conjunct the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant or the Midheaven reads alike; the Descendant, the IC and the outer planets are not tested. A natal Sun within orb belongs to births from roughly September 14 to 20.

## How to make a Cor Caroli talisman: turquoise and balm

Canopy pairs Cor Caroli with turquoise and balm, the Gemstone and Herb of the Correspondences card on the star's own page. The classical Behenian lists do not include the star, so the pairing is Canopy's. Its Traditional Uses line names the purpose: “Talismans for cultivating personal grace, artistic renown, and intellectual eloquence; used to attract patrons, restore harmony to a household, and banish melancholic temperament.”

A window's own page does not repeat them: its correspondence card reads “Correspondence data unavailable for this star”, and its About Cor Caroli row leads back to the star page. Canopy gives no method of making. For a talisman of Venus herself, see the [Venus talisman](https://canopyastro.com/venus-talisman.html).

## When to make a Cor Caroli talisman: the Cor Caroli election

In Canopy the Cor Caroli talisman and the Cor Caroli election are one search. A moment qualifies while the star's degree is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven and the Moon applies to it by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees. It is set aside if the Moon is combust or in her detriment or fall, applies by square or opposition to one of the five planets, or closes on an afflicted planet, an undignified Mars or Saturn, or the South Node; or if a malefic, the South Node or an afflicted planet stands within three degrees of the star. The shared rules are under [fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy](https://canopyastro.com/talismanic-timing.html#fixed-star-talisman-windows-in-canopy).

Virgo sharpens two of them. Venus, the star's first planet, is in her fall there, so a Venus beside Cor Caroli, or a Moon applying to join her, sets the moment aside; so does Jupiter, in his detriment. Mercury, at home and exalted in Virgo, counts against the star only when combust or retrograde.

The Moon reaches 24°55′ Virgo by conjunction from Virgo, by sextile from Cancer or Scorpio, by trine from Taurus or Capricorn. Scorpio is her fall and Capricorn her detriment, which leaves three approaches a month, each about three and a half hours long. From about September 7 to 26 the Sun is close enough to the star's degree that a joining Moon is combust.

A passing moment scores out of ten: 6 for a conjunction or 3 for a sextile or trine, 2 for the angle, up to 2 for a Moon waxing and not void of course; the star's benefic nature adds nothing. A Moon in late Virgo waxes only while the Sun runs from late Pisces to mid-Virgo, so 100 percent falls between about mid-March and early September, and at other times a conjunction peaks at 90.

A waxing Moon at 23° Virgo, not void, as the degree culminates: 100 percent, Excellent. Add Venus at 26° Virgo and that moment is set aside. A waning, void Moon at 23° Taurus as the degree rises: 50 percent, Good; at 23° Capricorn, set aside.

Windows last minutes: Virgo rises slowly in the north, so the star's degree holds the Ascendant about ten minutes at 40°N and eleven in London, five at 40°S, and the Midheaven about seven anywhere. Expect few.

## Finding a Cor Caroli window in Canopy

Open the Talismans tab and choose Fixed Star Talismans, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab, where it is titled Fixed Star Elections. The picker lists all thirty-five stars with their Arabic names, the fifteen Behenian ones preselected: tap None, then Cor Caroli. Set the place and a range of up to six months, and tap Search Stars.

Filters narrow the results by the Moon's phase and motion, the angle and the lunar mansion; *al-Simāk* alone keeps only the conjunction windows. Results sort by Soonest or Top Rated, each opening as Cor Caroli Talisman or Cor Caroli Election, with its score and a “Why this time?” list.
