# The best day to sign a contract: electing an agreement

al-ʿUqūd wa al-Mawāthīq — contracts and agreements

8 min read · From the classical sources · Updated October 25, 2026

## The best day to sign a contract is a window

**The best day to sign a contract**, by astrology, is not a date on a calendar but a window inside the days you can sign: an hour whose sky suits an agreement. The Arabic authors called the art of finding it *al-ikhtiyārāt*, “the choices”, and an auspicious day to sign a contract is simply a day that holds such an hour. Canopy keeps the signing apart from the talks before it and any lawsuit after it; its purpose for the act itself is Signing Contracts & Agreements, *al-ʿUqūd wa al-Mawāthīq*.

No date suits every signing: the rising sign changes about every two hours and the Moon’s sign every two to three days. The question is which moment, among those you can manage and for the place where you will sign, has the fewest faults and the most help.

**Not legal advice.** An election times the act of signing; it cannot judge the terms, the other party or the law that governs them.

## What makes a good day to sign a contract

For a lawsuit Canopy takes Jupiter and Mercury as the planets of the matter, but for a contract Mercury, whose hour the tradition gave to writing, reckoning and trade, and Venus, whose hour belonged to friendship. Mercury counts as strong for the matter in Gemini or Virgo and weak in Sagittarius or Pisces; Venus is strong in Taurus, Libra or Pisces and weak in Aries, Scorpio or Virgo. Either one combust counts against the window.

Four houses carry the matter, in this order: the first for you; the seventh for the other party; the third, which Canopy calls the house of travel, siblings and messages, for the papers between you; and the second, of wealth and possessions, for what changes hands. Each lord is scored for its sign, its place and whether it is retrograde or combust.

With the seventh as the matter’s own house, a signing is a contest of two lords. When the lord of the Ascendant overpowers the lord of the seventh, the window gains, and its reading says the self prevails; otherwise the reading says the other party holds the stronger hand, and the window loses heavily and is held back from the highest scores.

The Moon, the signifier of every beginning, is read against Mercury in particular: applying to him by aspect she counts for the window, the more as the aspect closes, and once separated she adds nothing.

## What sets a signing window aside

Some faults strike any window Canopy weighs for a named matter: the Moon combust (unless *cazimi*, in the heart of the Sun), void of course, which Sahl ibn Bishr and al-Bīrūnī read as a beginning that comes to nothing, in the *via combusta* from 19° Libra to 15° Scorpio, or within 8° of the South Node; Mars or Saturn rising within 3° of the Ascendant; and the lord of the Ascendant combust. The electional astrology guide sets them out under [how Canopy reads an election](https://canopyastro.com/electional-astrology.html#how-canopy-reads-an-election).

The contract search adds refusals of its own:

- Mercury or Venus retrograde. A retrograde significator was read as an election destroyed, a rule drawn from Sahl and the Picatrix, so while either one is retrograde the search finds no window at all;
- Mars or Saturn anywhere in the first or seventh whole-sign house, read as litigation or treachery, without the exemption the negotiation search gives a malefic in its detriment or fall;
- a malefic fixed star such as [Algol](https://canopyastro.com/algol.html) within a degree of the Descendant, as well as of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, since the other party’s angle matters here.

Canopy does not say why a window was set aside; it is simply absent. A range wholly inside a Mercury retrograde comes back empty, so run it past the day he turns direct.

## Hours, Moon signs and mansions for a signing

Among the windows that pass, the planetary hour counts. The hours of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and the Sun count for a signing, Venus’s added to the three a lawsuit search favors; Saturn’s hour counts against it, Mars’s costs a little as it does for every purpose, and an hour whose lord is retrograde or combust takes something back. In the Chaldean order, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, no more than two hours pass without a favored one; the free [planetary hour calculator](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-hours.html#planetary-hour-now) shows the hour now.

No Moon sign is refused by itself, but a Moon in Gemini or Virgo, Mercury’s signs, or in Libra, one of Venus’s, counts in the window’s favor. In Libra she is cleanest between about 13° and 19°: before that she stands in al-Ghafr, which this search counts against, and from 19° she enters the via combusta.

Three of the twenty-eight [lunar mansions](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html) count for a signing and four heavily against it. These are the contract search’s own scores, not refusals and not a verdict on the mansions: three of the four are fortunate, *saʿd*, in the general reading.

*The lunar mansions in Canopy’s Signing Contracts & Agreements search*

| No. | Mansion | Meaning | Where the Moon is | For a signing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | [*al-Dhirāʿ*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-dhira) | The Forearm | 17°09′ Gemini – 0°00′ Cancer | Counts in its favor |
| 13 | [*al-ʿAwwāʾ*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-awwa) | The Howler | 4°17′–17°09′ Virgo | Counts in its favor |
| 28 | [*Baṭn al-Ḥūt*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#batn-al-hut) | The Belly of the Fish | 17°09′ Pisces – 0°00′ Aries | Counts in its favor |
| 11 | [*al-Zubra*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-zubra) | The Mane | 8°34′–21°26′ Leo | Counts heavily against it |
| 15 | [*al-Ghafr*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-ghafr) | The Covering | 0°00′–12°51′ Libra | Counts heavily against it |
| 19 | [*al-Shawla*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-shawla) | The Sting | 21°26′ Scorpio – 4°17′ Sagittarius | Counts heavily against it |
| 22 | [*Saʿd al-Dhābiḥ*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#sad-al-dhabih) | The Lucky One of the Slaughterers | 0°00′–12°51′ Capricorn | Counts heavily against it |

Al-Dhirāʿ in late Gemini and al-ʿAwwāʾ in Virgo lie inside favored signs, so a Moon there collects both; Baṭn al-Ḥūt, in late Pisces, is a mansion [Canopy’s general reading](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#what-each-mansion-favors) already gives to sealing firm agreements. Among the [fixed stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html), [Deneb Algedi](https://canopyastro.com/deneb-algedi.html) within a degree of the Ascendant, Midheaven or Descendant counts for a signing.

## The best day to sign a lease, and other documents

Canopy’s purpose covers any binding document: a contract, a legal agreement, a business deal, a partnership. A lease is one, so the best day to sign a lease, or a good day to sign documents of any kind, is found with the same search. The app’s own note on the purpose ends in three words: time the signing.

The matters around a contract have purposes and rules of their own: the talks over terms belong to [Negotiations & Disputes](https://canopyastro.com/negotiation-astrology.html), a dispute taken to court to [Filing Court Cases & Lawsuits](https://canopyastro.com/filing-a-lawsuit-astrology.html), and a house or land you are buying to [Property & Real Estate](https://canopyastro.com/buying-a-house-astrology.html); where the substance is money committed, an investment or a loan, [Investments & Financial Decisions](https://canopyastro.com/investment-astrology.html) may fit better.

## How to find an auspicious day to sign a contract in Canopy

In the app, open Elections, choose Events, and under “What are you electing for?” pick Signing Contracts & Agreements, listed under Legal. Set From and To: the range opens on the next three months and runs to 183 days, about six months. Set the Location card to where you will sign, since the hours and the rising sign are worked out for it, then tap Find Best Moments.

The results list the windows for one, three or six months, by Soonest or Best Quality; only windows rated Good or Excellent appear. Each card gives the time, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the hour’s ruler, the first three factors in its favor and, once your birth data is entered, a line on your chart. Election Details adds Why this time?, everything that raised or lowered the score, and the House Ruler Analysis for the four houses; Save to Calendar and Set Reminder keep the hour. If the date is fixed, search the days around it for a window on that day.

## Your chart and the signing

The windows are ranked by the election chart alone. Once your birth data is entered, your nativity is added as a bounded adjustment, capped at ten points either way; Relationship to Your Natal lists the contacts, and Your Chart at Election Time sets the moment against your chart. One natal factor, counted for any purpose, suits a contract: Venus at the chosen moment aspecting the lord of your natal seventh house. An election rising in your natal sixth, eighth or twelfth-house sign counts against a window, as for any purpose; unlike a wedding or a launch, the legal searches add no bonus for rising in a particular natal house.

## Questions

**Is today a good day to sign a contract, astrologically?**

Canopy’s contract search does not mark whole days good or bad; today is a good day to sign if a window falls in it. Run Signing Contracts & Agreements from today and sort by Soonest to see whether one does, and at what hour. The free [planetary hour calculator](https://canopyastro.com/planetary-hours.html#planetary-hour-now) shows whether an hour of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or the Sun is running, and [tonight’s lunar mansion](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#tonight) where the Moon is lodging, but neither checks for a retrograde Mercury, a void Moon or a malefic in the first or seventh house. For the hour and the Moon right now, see [auspicious time today](https://canopyastro.com/auspicious-time-today.html).

**Should you sign a contract when Mercury is retrograde?**

Not by the rules Canopy follows. Mercury is a significator of a contract, with Venus, and a retrograde significator was read as an election destroyed, a rule drawn from Sahl ibn Bishr and the Picatrix. While Mercury is retrograde, about three times a year for some three weeks, the contract search sets every window aside, as it does while Venus is retrograde. A combust Mercury only counts against a window, unless he also rules the Ascendant.

**What is the best day of the week to sign a lease?**

No weekday wins on its own: Canopy’s contract search scores the planetary hour, not the day, counting the hours of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and the Sun for a signing and Saturn’s against it. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday each open at sunrise with their own planet’s hour, a favored one; Saturday opens with Saturn’s. A lease is a binding document, so Signing Contracts & Agreements is the search to run.

**Which sign should the Moon be in to sign a contract?**

Gemini, Virgo or Libra, which Canopy’s contract search counts in the window’s favor; no sign rules a window out by itself. Late Gemini and Virgo from about 4° to 17° also hold favored mansions, while in Libra the first 13° lie in al-Ghafr, counted against a signing, and from 19° the via combusta rules the window out.

**Does Canopy compare my chart with the other party’s?**

No. Canopy does not compare two people’s charts. The election chart gives the Ascendant to you and the seventh house to the other party, and the search weighs which of their lords is stronger. Only your own nativity is added, as a small, bounded adjustment; the other signer’s birth chart plays no part.

**Can astrology tell you whether to sign a contract?**

No, and Canopy does not try. An election chooses the moment for a beginning you have already decided on. It says nothing about whether the terms are fair, the document sound or the other party honest, and a window’s score is not the chance of a good outcome. This is not legal advice: read what you sign, and take a lawyer’s counsel where the stakes call for it.
