# Achernar, Ākhir al-Nahr: the fixed star in astrology, its talisman and its election

Ākhir al-Nahr — the end of the river, Achernar, Alpha Eridani

6 min read · From the classical sources · Updated October 25, 2026

## Achernar star meaning: the name Ākhir al-Nahr

In **Achernar** astrology the name comes first. The Achernar fixed star marks the end of the river Eridanus, and its Arabic name, *Ākhir al-Nahr*, means "the end of the river"; Achernar is that phrase in Western spelling. Canopy prints *Ākhir al-Nahr* beside the star on the Chart tab, the Today screen and the star picker.

The name seems first to have belonged to another star of the river, θ Eridani, now called Acamar, and only later to have settled on α Eridani. Achernar is not one of the [fifteen Behenian stars](https://canopyastro.com/fixed-stars.html#the-fifteen-behenian-stars), and the classical Behenian lists leave it out: it is one of the twenty further stars Canopy carries beside them.

## Where the Achernar fixed star sits

By tropical longitude the Achernar fixed star stood at 15°40′ Pisces in 2025; its star page in Canopy, which shows the day's position, read 15°41′ on October 25, 2026. Canopy gives it magnitude 0.46.

Achernar itself lies about 57 degrees south of the celestial equator and nearly 60 south of the ecliptic, and never clears the horizon north of about 33°N: not from New York, London or Tokyo. Yet its degree, 15° Pisces, rises and culminates everywhere daily, and that degree is all Canopy tests; here, rising and culminating mean the degree on the Ascendant or Midheaven, and no screen checks whether the star itself can be seen.

On the equal tropical spans of the [lunar mansions](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html), the degree falls in the twenty-seventh, [*al-Fargh al-Thānī*](https://canopyastro.com/lunar-mansions.html#al-fargh-al-thani), the Second Spout (4°17′ to 17°09′ Pisces), a Saʿd, or fortunate, mansion.

## Achernar in astrology: a benefic star of Jupiter

Canopy files Achernar as a Benefic star with one planet, Jupiter: a Benefic badge and a Planetary Nature card showing Jupiter alone on its star page, "Star: Benefic" on the Chart tab, and on an Achernar window, "a benefic fixed star of the nature of Jupiter". The natal reading says the star "carries a purely Jovian nature".

The Today screen's Fixed Stars card names any of the seven planets within two degrees of an aspect to Achernar. On a day Achernar holds the card's top slot, it adds what to seek, religious office and philosophical inquiry, and what to avoid, petty dealings and dishonest gain.

## Achernar conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven

Canopy calculates your chart from your birth date, time and place, returns Achernar to its degree at your birth, and counts a conjunction, the only aspect it tests, within three degrees of a classical planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex or a lunar Node. The Chart tab lists the contact under Other Conjunctions, with the orb and "Star: Benefic".

The star page gives the reading, drawn from the classical sources: with Achernar on a natal planet, "you are drawn toward philosophy, theology, and the pursuit of high office — this is a star of ecclesiastical honors and lasting fortune built on wisdom. Success comes through righteous conduct, and you often serve as a moral anchor for those around you."

That one text serves every point: Achernar conjunct the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant or the Midheaven reads alike, and the Descendant, the IC and the outer planets are not tested. A natal Sun within orb belongs roughly to births from March 2 to 9.

## How to make an Achernar talisman: amethyst, hyssop and Jupiter

Canopy pairs Achernar with amethyst and hyssop, in the Gemstone and Herb rows of the Correspondences card on the star's own page. The pairing is Canopy's own, not a Behenian one. The star page's Traditional Uses line gives the purpose: "Talismans for securing religious or philosophical distinction, gaining the protection of powerful patrons, and establishing enduring prosperity through virtuous action."

An Achernar window's own page does not repeat the stone and the herb; its About Achernar row opens the star page. Canopy gives the stone, the herb, the star's Jovian nature and the window, but no method of making. A talisman of Jupiter itself is a different election: see the [Jupiter talisman](https://canopyastro.com/jupiter-talisman.html).

## When to make an Achernar talisman: the Achernar election

In Canopy the Achernar talisman and the Achernar election are one search. A moment qualifies while Achernar's degree is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven, and the Moon is applying to the star by conjunction, sextile or trine within two degrees.

A moment is set aside if the Moon is combust, applies by square or opposition to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, or closes on an afflicted planet, an undignified Mars or Saturn, or the South Node, or if Mars, Saturn, the South Node or an afflicted planet stands within three degrees of the star.

One refusal shapes Achernar's windows: a Moon in her detriment, Capricorn, or her fall, Scorpio, is set aside unless she is joining the star in its own sign. The Moon reaches 15°40′ Pisces by conjunction from Pisces, by sextile from Taurus or Capricorn, by trine from Cancer or Scorpio, so the Capricorn sextile and the Scorpio trine never qualify. Three approaches remain each month, each three to four hours long, and the star's degree must reach an angle during one of them.

A passing moment scores out of ten: 6 for a Moon conjoining Achernar or 3 for a sextile or trine, 2 for the angle, and up to 2 for a Moon waxing and not void of course. The star's benefic nature adds nothing. A waxing Moon at 14° Pisces, not void, as the degree culminates: 100 percent, Excellent. Put Saturn at 13° Pisces and that moment is set aside. A waning, void Moon at 14° Cancer trining the rising degree: 50 percent, Good; at 14° Scorpio, set aside.

Windows last minutes, the time the angle takes to move a degree either side of the crossing. Pisces is a sign of short ascension in northern latitudes, so the Ascendant window lasts about five minutes in all at 40°N and nearly ten at 34°S; on the Midheaven, about seven anywhere. Expect few; the rules every star shares are under [fixed-star talisman windows in Canopy](https://canopyastro.com/talismanic-timing.html#fixed-star-talisman-windows-in-canopy).

## Finding an Achernar window in Canopy

Open the Talismans tab and choose Fixed Star Talismans, or Fixed Stars in the Elections tab. The picker lists all thirty-five stars with their Arabic names and opens with the fifteen Behenian stars selected: tap None, then Achernar. Set the place and a range of up to about six months, and tap Search Stars; scanning needs a subscription.

Results sort Soonest or Top Rated, with filters for the Moon's phase and motion, the angle and the lunar mansion; set to al-Fargh al-Thānī alone, the mansion filter keeps only the conjunction windows. Each opens as Achernar Talisman, or Achernar Election, with *Ākhir al-Nahr*, the score, the exact time and a "Why this time?" list.

## Questions

**What is Achernar in astrology?**

Achernar, *Ākhir al-Nahr*, "the end of the river", is the star that ends Eridanus, near 15°40′ of tropical Pisces. Canopy files it as a benefic star of Jupiter, not one of the Behenian stars, and reads it as a star of philosophy, high office and lasting fortune.

**What is the spiritual meaning of the Achernar star?**

In Canopy's reading, drawn from the classical sources, it is a star of philosophy, theology and "ecclesiastical honors"; with it on a natal planet, "you often serve as a moral anchor for those around you."

**What does Achernar conjunct the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven mean?**

Canopy gives one reading for any contact within three degrees: you are "drawn toward philosophy, theology, and the pursuit of high office", and success comes through righteous conduct. A natal Sun on Achernar belongs roughly to births from March 2 to 9.

**How do you make an Achernar talisman?**

Canopy pairs Achernar with amethyst and hyssop, on the star's own page, and times the work to the minutes when its degree, 15°40′ Pisces, holds the Ascendant or the Midheaven while the Moon applies to it. It gives no method of making.

**When is the best time to make an Achernar talisman?**

When its degree is within one degree of the Ascendant or the Midheaven and the Moon applies to it within two degrees: by conjunction from Pisces, which scores highest, by sextile from Taurus or by trine from Cancer. A Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio is set aside.

**What degree is Achernar in astrology?**

About 15°40′ of tropical Pisces in 2025, and 15°41′ in Canopy on October 25, 2026. The star never rises north of about 33°N, but its degree reaches the angles everywhere daily.
